another car dealer story (delivery prep)
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:09:42 AM »
so i was rotating my tires on saturday
three out of the four locking lug nuts were so tight that i practically had to stand on the wrench to get them off
on the wheel that the lug nut was not tight, there was one of the regular lug nuts that was on that tight
the rest of the regular nuts on all wheels were properly tightened, so someone at the dealership did that one too

dealer prep guys must have been in a practical joking mode that day

Why are you rotating your own tires? Won't the dealer do that for you free? That's a pretty new car.

lots of times those places will use air tools for those sort of things, meaning their extra tight to unloosen without air tools.
when i go in for that type of work i make sure to tell them not to over tighten.  don't want to be stuck on the side of the road and can't change a flat.
also leverage works really well. use a piece of pipe to make the breaker bar longer and it will be easier.

+1 I keep a couple foot piece of pipe in the back that slides over the lug wrench to use as a breaker bar.

yeah, i was using the X type one (multi size), so not much torque
later found my big socket in the correct size that fits my breaker bar, but i had already removed them all by then

WOW, most shops I worked at insist on using those torque sticks type extensions.  I usually use the 65# extension and then use the torque wrench to 80-90#.  If I am lazy to walk to the tool box, I will hit it with a 3/8 impact gun, then the torque wrench.

Always torque the lug nuts. buy a cheap $15 1/2" Drive torque wrench and the proper socket & extension
