Union says plan to use devices to keep workers 2 metres apart is intrusive and infantilising

Workers at a French factory manufacturing toilet paper and other hygiene products are opposing plans to introduce Covid-19 “social distancing” alarms.

Managers say the devices, which beep, vibrate, flash or emit an alarm of up to 83 decibels if the wearer is less than 2 metres from a colleague, are being tested to protect workers’ health.

However, union representatives have accused bosses of “particularly intrusive behaviour … that infantilises workers” and say the system is “comparable to those that try to dissuade dogs from barking”.

“Are they treating staff like dogs?” the Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail (CFDT) union asked.

A spokesperson for Essity, a Swedish company producing soap, tissues and sanitary products, told AFP the alarms were being tested among 2,800 workers at its factory at Gien, in the Loire Valley.

Mayor: ‘Give Us Evidence’ Potluck Caused Virus Cluster At Honolulu Hale
 2
The headquarters of Honolulu’s city government has seen its total cases rise to at least 13.

State health officials say an employee potluck potentially caused the recent outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Honolulu Hale, but Honolulu’s mayor says he has no idea what they’re talking about.

In a news release Monday, the state’s COVID-19 Joint Information Center cited the potluck as a “potential transmission source” for 11 cases of the virus found at the headquarters for Oahu’s city government over the past two weeks.

However, the only recent event to resemble a potluck on Honolulu Hale grounds was a city employee’s July 24 retirement party held outside the building on the Civic Center campus, according to Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

Some 25 to 30 participants collected bentos at the party over a two-hour period, Caldwell told Civil Beat on Wednesday. The city has a list of the employees who purchased the bentos and none of them have tested positive for COVID-19, he added.

“We don’t believe it came” from the retirement event, Caldwell said.

Brew pub owners on Oahu say they were improperly shut down

By Lynn Kawano | August 10, 2020 at 5:19 PM HST - Updated August 10 at 9:11 PM

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two brew pub owners are calling on the Honolulu Liquor Commission to review enforcement action against them over the weekend.
Police officers shut down Beer Lab Hawaii’s satellite location at Pearlridge Center, saying they were violating the city’s new COVID-19 order that put restrictions on alcohol sales.
But owner Nick Wong said they were given the green light by the Honolulu Liquor Commission to do take-out only and were operating within the rules.

“To have two enforcement agencies come down on us and one of them saying one thing and another saying another thing, it’s unbelievably frustrating,” Wong said.
Joe Lorenzen, of Waikiki Brewing Company in Kakaako, also said his business shouldn’t have been shut down Saturday because it meets the criteria of food versus alcohol sales.
Late Monday night, he said he did a walk through with the Liquor Commission, and they gave the business the green light to reopen.

Makes you wonder on who's (political) orders the police were acting on? Is this retaliation against businesses speaking out against the police state?

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - To address a surge in new COVID-19 cases on Oahu, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is proposing to shut down all bars on Oahu for three weeks.

The shutdown, he said, would allow the Honolulu Liquor Commission to come up with a stronger enforcement program. The request will need to be approved by the governor.

The mayor also wants to take other actions aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus.

For one, he wants to make masks mandatory inside and outside, including when you’re walking or jogging, playing team sports or watching them. (Masks aren’t required in the water.)

For months, health experts told Americans to stay home. Now, many are encouraging the public to join mass protests.

For months, public health experts have urged Americans to take every precaution to stop the spread of Covid-19—to stay at home, to steer clear of friends and extended family and to absolutely avoid large gatherings.

Now some of those experts are broadcasting a new message: It’s time to get out of the house and join the mass protests against racism.

“We should always evaluate the risks and benefits of efforts to control the virus,” Jennifer Nuzzo, a Johns Hopkins epidemiologist, tweeted on Tuesday. “In this moment the public health risks of not protesting to demand an end to systemic racism greatly exceed the harms of the virus.”

“The injustice that’s evident to everyone right now needs to be addressed,” Abraar Karan, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital physician who’s exhorted coronavirus experts to use their platforms to encourage the protests, told me.

It’s a message echoed by media outlets and some of the most prominent public health experts in America, like former Centers for Disease Control director Tom Frieden, who loudly warned against efforts to rush re-opening but is now supportive of mass protests. Their claim: If we don’t address racial inequality, it’ll be that much harder to fight Covid-19. There’s also evidence that the virus doesn’t spread easily outdoors, especially if people wear masks.

GOVERNMENT & REGULATIONS
PUPU PLATTER 212

Unlawful lockdowns?

I get calls from business leaders asking what we can do, or what they can do, to stop the government overreach into Hawaii’s economy and get us all opening faster.

Trying to find an answer had me doing some homework in Hawaii Revised Statutes, looking into recall elections (doesn’t seem a governor can be recalled, though mayors can be) and the emergency powers themselves.

That’s when I noticed something very interesting. Technically, the proclamations from Gov. David Ige and Mayor Kirk Caldwell declaring an emergency and invoking their ability to make rules with the force of law, have expired. They were issued March 4, and automatically expired 60 days later, on May 3.

Here’s the portion of the law I’m referring to: “§127A-14 State of emergency. … (d) A state of emergency and a local state of emergency shall terminate automatically sixty days after the issuance of a proclamation of a state of emergency or local state of emergency, respectively, or by a separate proclamation of the governor or mayor, whichever occurs first. [L 2014, c 111, pt of §2; am L 2019, c 214, §5]”
