Off Topic / Grandma Gatewood
« on: July 10, 2024, 08:15:02 AM »
At the age of 67, Emma Rowena Gatewood informed her adult children that she was going out for a walk. Little did they know that her “walk” would make history. Gatewood became the first woman to hike the entire 2,168-mile Appalachian Trail solo and in one season, starting from Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia and ending at Mount Katahdin in Maine.

Gatewood, often called "Grandma Gatewood," was a farmer’s wife from Ohio and a mother to 11 children, who in turn gave her 24 grandchildren. Her remarkable journey was not only a testament to her physical endurance but also to her indomitable spirit. She survived a marriage marked by severe domestic violence, escaping her abusive husband after many years. Her trek on the Appalachian Trail was a form of liberation and healing.

Gatewood's first thru-hike in 1955 was done with minimal gear: she wore Keds sneakers, carried a homemade denim bag, and relied on her knowledge of foraging and the kindness of strangers along the way. She completed the trail again in 1960 and section-hiked it in 1963, becoming an enduring symbol of perseverance and adventure.

Her journey brought significant attention to the Appalachian Trail and inspired future generations of hikers. Emma Gatewood's legacy lives on, not only in the hiking community but also as a powerful story of resilience and the enduring human spirit.

Off Topic / Aunt Jemima
« on: July 08, 2024, 07:45:15 AM »
The branding of the syrup was a tribute to this woman’s gifts and talents. Now future generations will not even know this beautiful woman existed. What a shame. The world knew her as “Aunt Jemima”, but her given name was Nancy Green and she was a true American success story. She was born a slave in 1834 Montgomery County, KY. and became a wealthy superstar in the advertising world, as its first living trademark. Green was 56 years old when she was selected as spokesperson for a new ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour and made her debut in 1893 at a fair and exposition in Chicago. She demonstrated the pancake mix served thousands of pancakes, and became an immediate star. She was a good storyteller, her personality was warm and appealing, and her showmanship was exceptional. Her exhibition booth drew so many people that special security personnel were assigned to keep the crowds moving. Nancy Green was signed to a lifetime contract, traveled on promotional tours all over the country, and was extremely well paid. Her financial freedom and stature as a national spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for all Americans. She maintained her job until she died in 1923, at age 89. This was a remarkable woman, and sadly she has been ERASED by politics. I wanted you to know and remind you in this cancel culture period.

Political Discussion / The Colour Revolution
« on: May 01, 2024, 07:44:52 AM »
The Colour revolutions (sometimes coloured revolutions)[1] were a series of often non-violent protests and accompanying (attempted or successful) changes of government and society that took place in post-Soviet states (particularly Belarus, Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan) and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the early 21st century.[2] The aim of the colour revolutions was to establish Western-style liberal democracies. They were primarily triggered by election results widely viewed as falsified. The colour revolutions were marked by the usage of the internet as a method of communication,[3] as well as a strong role of non-governmental organizations in the protests.

Lahaina wildfire survivors reacted with anger Tuesday to a plan by Hawaiian Electric Co. to impose a fee of up to 5% on Hawaii ratepayers’ bills to raise money to help finance the utility’s wildfire prevention efforts.

HECO’s Chief Operations Officer Jim Alberts told the House Finance Committee the utility needs the fee to create a revenue stream that can be used to borrow money to pay for wildfire-related costs.

The fee would be subject to review and approval by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, and would be capped at no more than 5% of consumers monthly bills, Alberts told lawmakers.

That drew an emotional reply from Lars Johnson, a Lahaina resident who said he lost everything when his home burned in the Aug. 8 wildfire. At least 101 people died in the fire, and Johnson described watching a man burn to death in the blaze.

“I would like to understand the audacity of HECO in thinking about raising rates on electric bills to pay for their sloppiness,” Johnson said.

https://www.civilbeat.org/2024/04/hawaii-governor-will-take-unilateral-action-to-restore-historic-wetland-in-lahaina/

Gov. Josh Green is preparing to use his executive powers to bring back one of Hawaii’s most significant historic places after consulting over the past several weeks with some of Lahaina’s top cultural leaders and Maui’s mayor.

A sandbar island known as Moku‘ula and its surrounding fishpond Mokuhinia have been buried for decades under a derelict and now fire-ravaged county park along Front Street.

The defunct ballfield was once the former seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the home and burial place of nobility and where the 1840 Hawaiian Constitution was signed. Attempts to unearth Moku‘ula have faltered over the years, but the Aug. 8 wildfire that destroyed much of Lahaina and killed at least 101 people has rekindled such efforts.

“We’re going to take unilateral action to restore this sacred space to the community,” Green said in a recent interview.
