General Discussion / Carry Conceal - What would you do?
« on: November 07, 2021, 11:31:27 AM »
The big news in the 2A front was the SCOTUS hearing on New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett, which is about Carry Conceal.  As we all know, any ruling that happens at the SCOTUS level will impact all laws in all 50 states and the DC.

So, lets assume the case goes pro 2A and Hawaii turns into a "Shall Issue" for carry conceal.  What will you do to celebrate this victory?

I will start it off:

1.  Write in the this Forum.  "LETS GO BRANDON" with a subject of "2A Carry Conceal Constitutional"
2.  Walk in  the next business day and apply for a permit with the reason of "IT IS MY CONSTITUIONAL RIGHT TO CARRY CONCEAL SO LETS GO BRANDON"
3.  Submit a permit to purchase a new gun.  SA Hellcat Micro, HK P30SK or SW Shield.
4.  Carry it for about a week then put it away because really I have no desire to carry conceal every day.  However, the option is there when I think it is necessary to be armed,  This is what I want, the right to choose the time and place to protect myself and family.  Sorry but other people doesn't fit in my equation for protection.  I'm not a police office or a super hero.  So make sure you are armed because if I can escape with myself and family without shooting, I'm out of there.

General Discussion / Scope 100-200 yards out
« on: October 17, 2021, 07:58:54 PM »
What magnification scope to use for 100-200yard shots with an AR15 16" barrel?

My son is saving up to buy a Burris RT-6 Riflescope 1-6x24mm.  I have only shot iron sights or CCO so I have no experience on what a good magnification would be.

Thanks for the input.

General Discussion / 80% Lower illegal
« on: October 14, 2021, 08:16:37 AM »
Just want to confirm, 80% is illegal to purchase without having a PTA and if purchasing online must ship to FFL?

If you own one prior to the law you have until 1 Jan 2022 to register?

I thought it would be a good personal project to put together a Poly 80.

Thanks

General Discussion / Kokohead Rifle Range Frame
« on: October 09, 2021, 02:00:34 PM »
I need to build a Rifle Frame for Kokohead.  It looks like there is a height range between 48" to 80" high.  What would be a suitable height for 100yrds shooting 5.56?  I have a SUV so a 48" high frame would work perfectly for transportation.

I have only shot military pop targets or used ranges that had their own targets so I never thought about the "science" of target frame size.  Assuming it is a science.

General Discussion / Carry License for Home?
« on: October 08, 2021, 12:43:17 PM »
Sorry for a long drawn out question...

SCOTUS will be hearing the case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Keith Corlett on Nov 3, 2021.  This case deals with carry laws outside of the home.  This got me thinking about the previous case District of Columbia v. Heller, decided in 2008, in which the court made it clear that a citizen had the right to bear arms in self-defense.  However, there was key wording that many anti-2A latched on to, which was ‘Self Defense within the home”.  Also, the Heller case did not answer the question about the requirement of a license to carry because the complainant did not dispute the need for a carry license.  (What I understand about the history of the case is that DC required a carry license even at home, which, like Hawaii, had a very high bar to obtain.  Without the license, the gun had to be in a safe or in a unassembled state, as to render the firearm useless from being immediately used as a firearm)

Understanding that we have the right to bear arms in self-defense to protect yourself at home, does Hawaii still require a carry license for that purpose?  For example, if I had my pistol loaded with one in the chamber, in a holster, at home, and for some reason HPD knocked on my door (maybe selling tickets to the policemen ball) and I answer, would they have sufficient justification to arrest me for an open carry without a license (knowing that no regular citizen has been given a license).

The current license that is posted on HPD website is for concealed carry outside of the home, which we all know HPD will never approve.  I tried searching and reading the current gun laws but there is no mention of needing a license to carry while in the home.  I’m curious enough to apply for a carry license with one phrase “In accordance with the Supreme Court of the United States ruling, District of Columbia v. Heller, 2008, I request a home carry license for Self Defense”.  Just to see what HPD would say.  Does HPD have to give a written justification for a denial?

General Discussion / Gun Registration - No More In Person
« on: September 24, 2021, 08:45:56 AM »
Everybody,

We won a case for right now! There is no more in person registration required starting NOW!  The state of Hawaii did not get there stay so the "no in person registration" begins immediately.

You will still need to register you firearms but you no longer need to do it in person or show the gun.  The State will of course appeal it to the 9th Circuit court but until the 9th Circuit court puts a stay or adjudicate, you don't need to go in person from now until a process is created to register you firearms.

One less step to waste your time going down town.

I might need to buy a gun just because....

Legal and Activism / Rifle Magazine Ban
« on: September 23, 2021, 09:38:33 AM »
Just want to make sure, did the bill to limit rifle magazine fail to become a law?

I searched and saw there was SB2519, which would limit rifle magazine to 10rds.  However it looks like it stalled in the Senate committee with no further action.

The reason I am asking is that I notice a lot of online stores, like the ones in gun brokers, that will not send to Hawaii saying it is illegal.

Am I missing something?

Edit:  found SB301.  So did this pass?  It doesn’t look like it did.

General Discussion / Who are the HPD at PTA and Gun Registration?
« on: September 21, 2021, 10:17:34 AM »
I was thinking about the number of uniform HPD that work in the PTA and Registration.  Who are, not names, these people?  Is this their actual job, rotational position, or did they get desk duty for something that they did wrong?  Not saying that I want more police in the street but it doesn’t seem right to pay them $5-6k plus benefits a month to do no stress paperwork.

General Discussion / Rifle PTA
« on: September 15, 2021, 05:24:39 PM »
I understand that a Rifle PTA is good for one year and can be used to purchase multiple Rifles.  How does this process work?

When I purchased a pistol, the FFL filled out the back of the PTA and when I registered the pistol, I turn in the PTA.  So, when I buy a rifle, does the FFL fill out the back of the PTA?  Does HPD keep the PTA when I register the rifle?  If so, how do I use PTA to buy another rifle within the same year?

Political Discussion / Presidential Vaccine Mandate and the 2nd Amendment
« on: September 10, 2021, 03:19:45 PM »
This is a very interesting view of how the Presidential Vaccine Mandate and the 2nd Amendment are intertwined.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/second-amendment-groups-biden-mandate-needle-gun

In summary:  "If Biden is allowed to impose regulations without a vote by Congress simply because he decides it helps ‘public safety,’ there is no limit to what he can do,".  The President has already deemed gun violence a "public safety" issue and will do everything in his power to stripe people of their 2A rights.

General Discussion / COVID Passport at HPD
« on: September 09, 2021, 04:10:02 PM »
Read an article saying that any one visiting a State facility will require a COVID negative test or passport starting immediately.  I’m assuming this will include PTA and registration.

Someone report back if they go to HPD on Friday, 10 Sept, if this is true.

General Discussion / Buying Rifle/Shotgun Out of State
« on: August 22, 2021, 01:13:21 PM »
Trying to understand the PTA in respect to Rifles and Shotguns.

When applying for a PTA for a Rifle/Shotgun, there is no need to have the make, model, SN of the rifle/shotgun.  Also, the PTA is good for 1 year from issuance and can be used multiple times to acquire a rifle/shotgun.

If I went to a state, like Nevada, that literally has same day NICS verification and transfer of ownership the same day;  Is it within Hawaii law for me to buy a rifle/shotgun at one of those states and fly it back to Hawaii and register?   Assuming I had a current rifle/shotgun PTA that covers the days that I had physical possession of the rifle/shotgun.

I have read HPD website and tried to search on this site and didn't really find the answer.  Most of the discussion was about buying from out of state, like gunbroker.com, in which they send it to a FFL, or moving to Hawaii and bringing firearms with them.

Thanks

General Discussion / Mailed PTA for rifles and shotguns?
« on: August 21, 2021, 05:07:56 PM »
I was on the HPD website to see if I needed to do anything when picking up my PTA and notice a blurb which I didn't notice before.

"As an option, long-gun applicants may have their processed permits mailed to them. Applicants need to provide a self-addressed pre-paid envelope, certified restricted-delivery return receipt required(available at the U.S. Post Office) at time of application for permit. Long-gun (rifles/shotguns) permits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue"

Has this always been the case for rifles/shotguns or did it just change?  I know that HPD lost the lawsuit recently on PTA/registration so I don't know if this was a change because of the lawsuit or it was always like this.  If this was a change because of the lawsuit, what happen to handguns?  For what reason can't HPD mail the handgun permit?

General Discussion / Transfer Gun
« on: August 10, 2021, 07:06:52 PM »
I want to transfer a gun to my wife so she can be a gun owning supporter of the 2 amendment.  Do I just write a letter say I’m transferring gun sn to xxx so she can get an PTA?

General Discussion / When to buy
« on: July 17, 2021, 05:49:52 PM »
I finally got a reservation for a PTA.  Read that once the PTA is approved, it is only valid for 10 days. Most likely buying from mainland dealer and shipped to FFL.  So should I/could I order prior to getting the PTA or buy after getting the PTA?  What happens if the gun arrives after the 10 day PTA validation?

I’m 99.9% sure I will get the PTA.  If don’t I will have bigger issues to worry about.  I.e The gun I already have registered and a job that requires a security clearance.  I’m a mainland transplant so all I had to do was register my gun so I have no experience buying in Hawaii, which BTW is a PITA.

Thanks
