Now that Andria Tupola is on C&C, we have an opportunity to address the concerns about the range that have largely been ignored by previous administrations;  i.e. renovations, improvements, adopting the park, etc.

I reached out to her and she is willing to host a meeting (likely via a digital platform like zoom) to have a discussion about what can be done. She also wants to bring Tommy Waters into the discussion, whom she feels is open to supporting this effort and whose support will likely be needed for anything to move forward. Thielen will likely be involved and she is aware of her anti-2a views, but is hoping she can set those aside and focus on the responsibilities of her position and not make this a personal/political issue.

I need all those who have been playing a part in fighting for the range to confirm if they are willing to meet. If we can get enough attendance by these individuals, I will reach out to her again to set up the meeting. She and other council members who may participate are busy with other priority projects, so it might not happen ASAP. But having worked with her previously on other issues, I know she will follow through with trying to address concerns of the community.

Please use this opportunity to make a positive change to possibly get the improvements and repairs the range needs. I don't want this post to turn into Tupola-bashing, negative nancy replies about how nothing is going to happen; either things can change or they won't, but all we can do is try.

I'm scheduled to follow up with her in a week or two, so please let me know if this is something you guys are interested in.
General Discussion / Revisiting the falsified Kokohead incident
« on: January 11, 2019, 06:49:28 PM »
My friend (who is a physicist) and I revisited the alleged bullet incident that got steel targets beyond 100yds banned at Kokohead, and needless to say that it's still not looking good for those who claim that a bullet defied the laws of physics and traveled from the range through someone's window, approximately 1.5mi away.

We utilized the ballistics of a 7.62x54Rround and a mosin nagant, given the projectile showcased during the investigation appears to be a be a 7.62. We were initially going to analyze all common 7.62 platforms (AK, SKS, etc), but determined it would be a waste of time, given the low FPS, muzzle velocity and maximum range of those platforms, and that only a platform like the mosin and the 7.62x54R or something similar has the capability to generate the necessary velocity and flight pattern to recreate the incident.

We will be finalizing the calculations next week, but preliminary assessment reveals that someone would need to have walked passed the roof of the bench and into the grass, then fired a projectile at an 89 degree angle over the top of Kokohead, just to reach the location of where the bullet landed. That means someone would have to walk onto the firing lane while it was hot without the range officers noticing, and shoot almost straight into the air. This does not take into account air and wind resistance (which is prevalent at Kokohead), nor the dispersal of kinetic energy into a Target or off the ground or berm, which people claim was responsible for ricocheting the bullet over the top of Kokohead.

I'm not sure if anyone would be willing or want to do anything with this, but it would seem that this information might be useful in convincing those in charge of the range (specifically Mike) to allow the reimplementation of targets past 100yds.
Firearms and Accessories / Significantly improved mosin accuracy
« on: January 04, 2019, 11:56:34 PM »
Initially only shot surplus, as mosins in the collection were meant to be shtf tools, but cleaning was a chore, and felt it was time for a change.

Switched out the ammo to S&B 185gr soft points (as this will be used as a hunting platform), removed the stock sights and mounted a Bushnell Trophy Scout that I got on sale on an ATI mosin mount.

I'm used to 4in groups with irons at 50 yards, primarily because I suck and can't see well, but also because I could never dial in the irons. I was shocked at the level of accuracy I was able to achieve on this platform; dialed it into a tack driver at 50yds in less than 30 min (pic below). Ran into issues at 100yds, but I'm attributing it to lack of practice and some mechanical issues that I'm currently working on; had to hold about 4in high towards the end of the day just to get on paper.

Needless to say, I've rekindled my love for the mosin and it's potential, and I'm excited to see how it will perform in the field with putting meat in the freezer.
Firearms and Accessories / Local Hornady One Shot distributors
« on: January 04, 2019, 11:35:29 PM »
Planning to bed my hunting platform to increase accuracy, and hoping to use Hornady one shot as my releasing agent.

Any local distributors?

If the veteran bedders would like to chime in on a suitable AEROSOL alternative, I'm all ears.

I'm aware you can use things like neutral shoe polish, but I'm looking for a spray based release agent for convenience, and I heard HOS is the best.

Thanks guys.
Hunting / 7.62x39 round recommendations
« on: November 12, 2018, 10:34:45 PM »
Anyone have experience hunting with 7.62x39 that can recommend a round? I currently run WPA and wolf HPs, but I'm not sure if this would be ideal for pig and axis, as the round tends to fragment rather than expand.

I know lots of guys on The mainland hunt deer with with WPA hollow points, but not sure if it would be better to do with something else.  I'm more of a "good enough" kind of perspective,  but not at the expense of destroying meat.
Hawaii Defense Foundation / Maximum range for freeshot
« on: October 28, 2018, 08:11:19 PM »
What's the maximum range for long guns during free shoot? Wanting to test various closer range distances (sub 40-50yds) for my 12ga hunting loads.

Thanks guys
Firearms and Accessories / Getting into black powder C&B pistols
« on: August 07, 2018, 12:50:20 AM »
Interested in recommendations for getting into C&B pistols. This will likely be a last resort shtf tool, so I'm looking for a model/caliber/load with more "real world application" than cowboy action shooting focus or for fun.

Heard its best to start with a .36 1851 navy,  But also to Just go with the 1858 in .44 due to it being a work horse. I'm thinking of just going for the 1858 right out the gate,  but figured id ask the vets first.

Also,  best place to get powder, caps, wad & ball locally? Id assume WGS, but again.... asking the vets would be best.
Hunting / Preferred hunting knives
« on: July 16, 2018, 09:58:50 PM »
Assembling my gear while I prep and train for my first solo hog spot-and-stalk archery hunt, I'm on the subject of knives.

Plan on packing carbon mora and beef skinning knives for essentially all quartering, skinning and fleshing tasks, and a utility blade with either a safety or hook blade for initial hide cuts to save my blades.

Interested to know what others use.
Hunting / Best means for packing out hogs during solo hunts
« on: June 11, 2018, 04:34:29 AM »
As I will primarily be hunting solo, I'm interested in how the hunting vets prefer to pack out their meat, specifically with regards to pig

I know the most common way most people do it is to gut and pack out the whole animal for quartering later (or imu), but Ive also seen the gutless method, aka the poacher method,  that appears to be far more efficient, at the expense of less net meat / wasted meat.
Hunting / Boar bow hunters
« on: May 31, 2018, 12:32:23 AM »
Picked up a bow as a back up, being that the only authorized public firearm area for me would be Kuli'ou'ou, And I'm very interested in hunting the pali.

Give me the deets about hunting with a bow, peeps.
Hunting / Field Dress Etiquette
« on: May 19, 2018, 10:37:30 AM »
After field dressing, what is the "proper" thing to do with the entrails?

My friends on the mainland always buried, but several "hunters" (more like poachers) ive spoken to recently say they just leave everything because "no maddah...da mongoose and pigs going eat em anyway". I personally don't think this is correct way to go about it, so advice from a more respectable crowd is appreciated.
Hunting / Authorized Types of Firearms for Hunting
« on: May 13, 2018, 11:11:54 AM »
Just got my license and starting to learn the ins and outs from the ground up, with focus in rifle hunting mammal game.

Hoping to use my current weapon systems,  but can't find any info on types of firearms authorized, or restrictions that might be in place; i.e. mag limit.

Hoping the experts can clarify, so I can potentially avoid needing to buy something else.
General Discussion / Tupola for Governor
« on: January 26, 2018, 08:40:15 AM »
She's running for Governor.

Reached out after hearing the news and informed her there are citizens who would like to discuss things with her and hear her opinion on issues of importance; she responded and is willing to try and coordinate a meeting to hear you all out.

If you are interested,  i highly suggest coordinating a meeting ASAP. Figure out when and where, and try to make the location convenient for anyone to attend; especially her being she lives so far away. She's very busy to begin with, and is going to get even busier, so now might be your only chance.

Let me know so i can respond and try and try to schedule something.  No guarantees.

Reloading / Small Rifle Primers in .357 MAG?
« on: March 11, 2016, 11:57:04 PM »
Can't find Small Magnum Pistol Primers anywhere. Called WGS, J Hara, Prime Sports....nothing.

I read that you can sub Small Rifle Primers for SMPPs, so long as you start of on lower loads and work your way back up. In fact, most people claim that they prefer to use SRPs in general so that they can load both rifle and pistol without having to have multiple sizes of primer.

Another common thing I have heard is that the CCI SRP is the exact same thing as the CCI SMPP.

I need clarification on this, preferably with someone who has loaded or continues to load .357 MAG with SRPs. If I can't find primers, my recent reloading purchase will be completely worthless.
