President Trump Asks Dianne Feinstein to Add ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban to School Safety Bill

President Trump asked Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to add her “assault weapons” ban to the overarching school safety bill during a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers on Wednesday.
Feinstein’s bill, which is an enhanced reintroduction of a bill she has put forward again and again, bans over 200 different firearms.

During Wednesday’s White House meeting, Trump showed support for the gun control pushed by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). The Manchin/Toomey bill is a gun control bill that the Democrat-controlled Senate rejected on April 17, 2013. But Trump chalked that failure up to Barack Obama’s lack of leadership, and talked of using the Manchin/Toomey bill as a base to which other bills could be added.

Trump Wants Joe Manchin’s Gun Control, Rejects Steve Scalise’s National Reciprocity Push

President Donald Trump embraced Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) gun control bill but rejected Rep. Steve Scalise’s (R-LA) push for national reciprocity during a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers Wednesday afternoon.

When it was Rep. Scalise’s time to speak, he highlighted the crime-fighting value of concealed carriers and the need to pass national reciprocity legislation. National reciprocity was introduced in the House on January 3, 2017, and passed in the House on December 6, 2017. It was introduced in the Senate on March 1, 2017, and it has yet to come up for a vote nor has Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said a word in support of it.

Trump shut down Scalise’s reciprocity push, suggesting the gun control package being pieced together would never pass if national reciprocity were added to it.

Trump looked at Scalise and said, “You know I’m your biggest fan in the whole world. I think that maybe that bill will someday pass, but it should pass as a separate bill. … You’ll never get this passed. If you add concealed carry to this, you’ll never get it passed. Let it be a separate bill.”

Trump added, “We want to get something done.”

Trump: 'Take the guns first, go through due process second'

President Trump on Wednesday voiced support for confiscating guns from certain individuals deemed to be dangerous, even if it violates due process rights.

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Trump was responding to comments from Vice President Pence that families and local law enforcement should have more tools to report potentially dangerous individuals with weapons.

“Allow due process so no one’s rights are trampled, but the ability to go to court, obtain an order and then collect not only the firearms but any weapons,” Pence said.

"Or, Mike, take the firearms first, and then go to court," Trump responded.

Watch Dianne Feinstein Erupt With Glee After Trump Seems to Endorse Her Assault Weapons Ban

President Donald Trump held a stunning televised meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Wednesday, and signaled he was open a series of gun control measures in a move that left Democrats beaming and Republicans stunned.

The freewheeling meeting, broadcast live from the Cabinet Room, featured Trump embracing gun control legislation from expanded background checks to restricting gun sales to young adults.

Perhaps most remarkably, Trump even made a comment that sent Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Democrat from California, into a fit of joy.

After Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) spoke about her desire to expand background checks with the aim of curbing domestic violence, Trump asked Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) if he could add her proposal to his bipartisan bill with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).

“Dianne if you could add what you have also – and I think you can — into the bill,” Trump then suggested.

I'm pretty certain it will be coming real soon...Trump already said publicly that he has his people drafting it now.

Here's Rubio's statement on the Senate floor today re the proposed bill (includes video):

[Does not include raising age to 21 for long gun purchase, ex parte restraining/confiscation orders, banning any firearms or accessories (e.g. bumpstocks, etc.), etc. as "hinted" at yesterday by Trump. I wonder what the "other side" will propose...]

Marco Rubio Announces Senate Plan To Address Gun Violence

Excerpts:

Therefore, I will be joining later today with Senator Orrin Hatch and others in introducing the Stop School Violence Act. If passed this law would provide federal grants to do some important things that would have been really helpful in this case: strengthen security infrastructure, provide school training for everyone, administrators, teachers, and even students to be able to identify threats, and to report them.

A second issue we identified is that even if law enforcement, school administrators or family members believe that an individual poses the risk of committing an act of violence, they have very few options to prevent them from purchasing any gun or taking the guns away that they already have. And to be clear, the due process in such a situation would be on the front end, not on the back end.

The third issue we uncovered is that federal law appears to discourage school systems from reporting dangerous students to law enforcement.

Fourth, we need to strengthen background checks.

Fifth, we must begin to prosecute the purchase of guns by people prohibited from doing so.

Cooler heads will prevail. Not sure if Trump really meant what he said but it is disappointing to hear about him wanting to bypass due process. I am waiting to see how this plays out. However, I am a bit disappointed in Trump for saying this.

I have been reading some who feel this was said as a distraction for the Dems and MSM to play off of for some other purpose. But I am not sure what that purpose would be?

Perhaps this is one of the articles you read by people speculating that Trump's talking was some kind of "set up", or "rope-a-dope" as AWR Hawkins puts it. Dr. Hawkins seems less than convinced though. I have no idea, and will have to wait and see what the coming days, weeks, months, and years yield in term of actual actions. I sent the White House an email with a bunch of emphatic "NO!"s to every point Trump made yesterday about infringing my rights. Time will tell.

Donald Trump Could Be Pulling a Gun Control ‘Rope-a-Dope’

As President Trump spent time stacking gun bill upon gun bill Wednesday, it was impossible to avoid thinking he might be setting up the Democrats via a gun control “rope-a-dope.”

The totality of it all makes Trump look like he is on the ropes and nearly finished fighting for the Second Amendment.

But we must ask ourselves: is Trump really done fighting, or is he just sucking in the Democrats, letting them grow overconfident of victory before unleashing a flurry that stops their gun-grabbing plan in its tracks?

Gun control “rope-a-dope.”

Don't worry. Next week, Trump will be reported saying that there are too many douche bag children in the schools and who cares if those shitholes get shot.

Trump, Pence 'don't want gun control,' NRA's chief lobbyist says after meeting

Just one day after putting the NRA on the defensive with stunning televised comments, President Trump has signaled in an Oval Office meeting that he doesn't want gun control, according to the NRA's top lobbyist.

Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, tweeted late Thursday that "POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control."

Chris Cox

@ChrisCoxNRA
I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control. #NRA #MAGA

About an hour later, Trump appeared to endorse Cox's version of events with a tweet of his own: "Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!"

On Wednesday, Trump shocked observers during a televised discussion with bipartisan lawmakers by appearing to endorse extreme gun control measures.

“Take the guns first. Go through due process second,” Trump said. “I like taking the guns early.”

Trump, who has publicly changed his mind on other key issues, also urged Republican lawmakers not to be "afraid" of the powerful gun lobby and openly entertained more gun restrictions.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/sessions-pushes-charge-those-who-lie-buy-guns-n855961

"No child should have to fear going to school or walking the streets of their neighborhood," Sessions said.

While it's a federal crime to lie on the form a buyer submits to purchase a gun, the offense seldom results in arrests or charges. Sessions said he is urging the nation's U.S. attorneys to "swiftly and aggressively" prosecute people who falsely declare that they are free of disqualifying factors.

Prosecutions of what is known as the crime of "lie and try" in the past have been rare, averaging about 30 cases a year, because they are difficult to prove and considered low priorities. But Sessions is urging U.S. attorneys to bring charges when would-be buyers pose a risk of violence.
