General Discussion / 6.8 spc ammo - as hard to find as 6.5 Grendel?
« on: March 07, 2024, 02:52:02 PM »
Is 6.8 spc ammo difficult to find locally?

(I already own a 7.62x39 upper and have parts to build a 20” fluted Heavy Barrel 6.5 Grendel upper and a small case of Grendel Amax)

If 6.8 spc ammo is easy to find and not to crazy in price, I may pick up a 6.8 upper for 99.99% range fun and 0.01% of hunting pig/deer on the outer isles

I was talking to a Maui guy and he loves his 6.8 and he is a reloader.

I’m too lazy to reload

Out of a 16” barrel, Grendel and SPC are about the same out to 300yards so maybe I’ll just put a 16” on the Grendel

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / Hunting scope question
« on: February 15, 2024, 08:00:37 PM »
Edited 2/25/2024 to add:
Lpvo 1-4x24, 1-8x24, etc) should be ok to 3-6x magnification depending on my eye pupil (probably 4-6mm in low light).  Objective lense / magnification = scope exit pupil

24mm/4x = 6mm scope exit pupil
24mm/6x = 4mm scope exit pupil

If the scope exit pupil > 6mm, my eye won’t see the difference

If I try 8x magnification:
24mm/8x = 3mm scope exit pupil.  My eye will notice a dimmer sight picture

So Lpvo (small 24mm objective lense) will be dim after 6x magnification

So my 1-4x24 will likely be ok for me for low light on Oahu (pig hunting ok,  goat hunting nope)

Sorry, I know there is a hunting section but don’t think it has much traffic

I am trying to talk myself into trying hunting again.  Read that a 2-7x32  or a 3-9x40 with an illuminated reticle should be adequate for under 200 yards.   I think when my dad or friends took us hunting on Lanai, all the shots taken were under 200.  I don’t think that I would take a shot over 200…

I also read that 1-4x24, 1-6x24 and 1-8x24 make poor hunting scopes because a 24mm objective lense is too small.  Will not be able to see in low lighting (dawn/dusk)

I have a 7.62x39 AR with a Nikon 1-4x24 (illuminated reticle) for Oahu  Now I’m wondering if I should swap in my 2-7x32 (no illuminated reticle)

I still have to assemble a 6.5 grendel AR.   I had been thinking of using a spare Nikon 1-4x24 (illuminated) for Oahu and a Nikon 3-9x40 (no illumination) for deer on Maui, Molokai or Lanai

Have a Marlin 7mm-08 with a Nikon 3-9x40

Anyone using a 1-4x24, 1-6x24 or a 1-8x24 for Oahu?   Is it really that bad?

Does having an illuminated reticle for a 2-7x32 or 3-9x40 make a major difference?  It would suck to fork out a lot of money to go outer islands and miss an opportunity because I cheaped out on a scope

If I get an illuminated scope, will likely be a vortex (Nvm….their higher end stuff are for tactical shooting)

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / Registering a firearm to a spouse
« on: February 07, 2024, 01:04:54 PM »
I’m transferring a 556 ar and 9mm ar to my daughter and her husband.

He just started a new job and doesn’t have much vacation, so I think the ar’s will initially be under my daughter only…..and later also under my SIL.

I assume he just has to go registration side with my daughter, their marriage certificate, drivers license, the rifle registration and his hunters education certificate to request a new rifle registration that has both their names on it?

Thanks in advance!!

General Discussion / New affidavit - bring to HPD when you get permit?
« on: January 28, 2024, 07:17:06 PM »
For those that applied for permits at the end of 2023 and had to get new affidavits

I assume that people just need to show the new affidavit when they go to pickup their permit

Ie.  HPD STARTED the permit process  WITHOUT the new affidavit….. so I assume they will COMPLETE the paperwork WITHOUT the affidavit…..they just won’t give me the permit if I don’t have the affidavit.

But HPD logic is interesting!!

For questions about the new permit application process:

When you call:
When the first message starts - select 1
When the next message starts - select 2 to speak to someone

First message is about all the options you can choose from and not too long……. but the 2nd message is long

General Discussion / Any recommendations on a freight forwarding company?
« on: January 22, 2024, 11:53:57 AM »
1/22/24 - Edited to add:
It looks like Palmetto will still ship to guns/lowers to FFL’s in Hawai’i.  I guess anything else has to be freight forwarded….

Is it reasonable…. like under $200?  I want to buy several complete lowers, several complete uppers and several lower kits (stock, buffer, tube, spring and lpk)

Worse case is I’ll have a relative on the mainland buy it and they drop off when they visit…..or I get it from them when I visit

I’ll try ask Jen at Kaleo Arms too for guidance and leads.

Dang.  I really like PSA.  I can’t always afford the top tier stuff like BCM when it is mainly just a range toy.

I don’t watch the news or listen to the radio.

Just curious.

Have crimes involving guns gone up markedly locally and/or nationally?
- causing the politicians, HPD and the general public to react for more restrictions/hoops.
- I assume suicide isn’t considered a crime but I don’t know if politicians include suicide by gun in their decision making

I’m just wondering if crime #’s increased.  Cause then I can sort of understand them increasing the # of hoops/steps to acquire stuff

If crime #’s are about the same - did a lot of key positions in Hawaii change hands to those that want more hoops to jump thru.

Thanks!

(For most people that watch crime in the news, most probably don’t research and probably just react…..thinking stricter gun laws will make things better)

Edited to add that I had looked at this before posting.  It seems like Hawaii has low “gun violence”.  (What ever that term means)

I guess maybe they want even lower “gun violence”

Or is my permit now invalid/garbage and I have to reapply for a long gun permit?  (I just got a 2024 affidavit from Prime Sports last week)

I’m trying to stock what I can before:
- Hawaii decides to follow Washington
- other companies follow Palmetto and won’t ship direct to Hawaii

Trying to call HPD is now more difficult to contact Suzy.  Long winded messages before they give a list of options you can choose from.  Which go to another long winded message before they give another list of options to choose from.

General Discussion / Palmetto State - freight forwarding
« on: January 21, 2024, 01:24:54 PM »
1/31/24 Edited to add
PSA generally does not follow its shipping policy of needing a freight forwarder for Hawaii.   If PSA does message a freight forwarder, just try again later.

1/22/24 - Edited to add
I tried to order a lower from Palmetto and that is ok.  Looks like Non FFL stuff has to be freight forwarded

Anyone order from PSA recently and use freight forwarding?  I tried to place an order but they no longer ship direct to Hawaii and Alaska.  I need to use a freight forwarder.  I’m going to contact PSA tomorrow to get info.

How was the experience using a freight forwarder?  Easy to set up? Any issues/problems?

If it is a pita, I’ll probably have PSA send the package to a relative on the mainland and wait till they visit Hawaii or have them mail it to me

The prices for their complete uppers/lowers, lower kits and deals are very reasonable.  And some stuff is/was free shipping.  I’ve never had an issue with them or their products.

Their value priced stuff makes for great range toys.

1/26/24 edited to add

HPD said that the reason Straub asked me to get the form is because the form says the hospital can fax the completed form to HPD.   BUT HPD NOW HAS NO FAX!!  lol

Are all the doctors doing this?  In the past, the doctor/hospital dealt with hpd.

Now we have to take time to get the paperwork and bring to hpd so hpd can process my permit

General Discussion / Applying for permit online (not receive)
« on: September 18, 2023, 01:31:02 PM »
I know it possible to get a permit via email

I was told that it is possible to APPLY for a permit ONLINE.  I checked the hpd website and it says have to APPLY IN PERSON.  I tried to call hpd to double check but no one is picking up

Anyone ever heard about applying for a permit on line?

Tnx!

General Discussion / Gun trusts
« on: July 22, 2023, 04:41:39 PM »
Hawaii is turning bluer.  I’m thinking that eventually a lot of firearms will not be allowed - similar to Washington.  (Which I thought was more red than Hawaii)

Our plans have changed.  Our kids are now planning to move back to Hawaii…so we are not moving to Washington.

Washington has “grandfathered” existing guns already in the state.  I assume people cannot just pass down their “ grandfathered” items to their kids

I’m trying to read up about gun trusts.

I’m thinking of setting up a gun trust for each kid before Hawaii restricts certain items similar to WA.

I’m hoping the gun trusts will allow transferring my items to my kids even if Hawaii restricts them - even if my kids move back after a ban is in place.

So I’m thinking of buying multiple completed psa ar lowers (and possibly multiple bcm uppers….I need to look at the WA ban list)
and putting them into the trusts

I’m thinking if the items are in state and the trusts are in place before a ban - my kids will be able to get the items if they move back after the ban is in place.

I need to read more about trusts and the cost.   If it is pretty costly, I guess they will just need to get by on pistols and semi auto shotguns :-)

General Discussion / 22TCM9R ammo - any LGS stocking it?
« on: May 07, 2023, 07:39:44 PM »
5/13/23 - Found at 808 gun club on Queen st.   Apparently they stock it because some of their members shoot it

In case no one has it, I’ve already reached out to Kaleo Arms.   Worst case is I’ll ask my kids to bring some down from the mainland when they visit

(I know…. I’m also looking at 5.7’s like the PSA Rock, Ruger and M&P.  I’ll wait a few more years after they vet any possible issues and fix them on the Gen 2’s.   I don’t want to pay to be a guinea pig

I just got a 22tcm9r conversion kit for the Glock.  It was only 150 shipped.  I can use the stock Glock mags

I already have four HD 9mm pistols.   This is just for giggles till I get a 5.7.

PSA has great deals right now  Too bad they currently only offer 23rd mags.   Optic ready lightened slide, holosun red dot, threaded barrel, 2 mags for 600.   Or no red dot and get 10 mags and a sold pistol case.   There is also a combo package of a Rock and an AR for like $850)

General Discussion / Anyone ever try shipping ammo from Oahu to outer isle?
« on: September 04, 2022, 01:15:08 PM »
My friend is planning to move back home to Maui from Oahu

I assume the only outer isle shipper is YB and he will need to put it a small pallet….which may be able to go into a standard shipping container with other typical stuff.

Not sure if his pallet may need to go into a “special” container since it is hazmat.

Any info / experience would be greatly appreciated

He is an active member of HRA and hopes to build up the 2A community on Maui

General Discussion / Gifting firearms to kids on the mainland
« on: February 02, 2022, 10:41:39 PM »
Update: My kids now plan to move home.

I still have to do a little more reading….

I’m looking at gifting firearms to my kids when they come to visit and have them transport it home and register it in their state.  One is in Connecticut, one in Washington state.   The laws in Connecticut are really strict…..worser than Hawaii

Or bringing it up when I visit…..

I’ll also talk to Suzy at HPD

I’ll also have the kids talk to their police departments

If it is a pain, I’ll just give them money to buy toys

Anyone ever transferred stuff to family on the mainland?

General Discussion / Don’t need to bring in firearm for registration?
« on: December 26, 2021, 06:36:19 PM »
My friend says that firearms no longer have to be brought in to be registered.

I checked the hpd website and couldn’t find any thing saying that the firearm had to be brought in…..but I’m so used to bringing them in

(I understand that eventually firearms can be registered on line)

Thanks!

Firearms and Accessories / Guntec 9mm adapter for AR
« on: November 24, 2021, 12:36:45 PM »
If you are considering a Guntec 9mm adapter (colt mags) for your AR lower, keep in mind that it may need some “shaving” to fit.

Mine wouldn’t fit in an Anderson or Aero Precision Mag well.
The width seems ok but was little too long front to back.

Guntec told me I was the first and asked me to send it back.  I asked them for the spec and tolerances so I could mic the adapter but they haven’t returned my email

General Discussion / “Servicing” o/u shotguns?
« on: November 19, 2021, 09:37:52 AM »
I read something about “servicing” o/u shotguns.  Does anyone locally do that, what does it entail/include and how much?

I don’t do any “proactive” servicing of any of my other toys besides cleaning/oiling and changing o rings/buffers on gas piston semi shotguns.   Usually only fix/replace stuff if it doesn’t work

General Discussion / Using the Online PTA forms - are they current?
« on: September 20, 2021, 06:42:59 PM »
Are the online forms current?

One time a while back, I printed and filled out the forms but hpd only used a few of the forms and I had to use the forms at hpd

Thanks,
