I trolled from my one man canoe and caught fish for years before buying myself a fully loaded scupper pro. I used to troll an 8.25 mile route from Hawaii Kai to Kaimana Beach and I figured that if I was catching stuff with my canoe worked, a fully rigged kayak would be even better. So I bought myself a scupper pro and outfitted it with two pole holders, a fish finder, gaff, collapsible cooler, pfd, carbon fiber paddles, parachute, anchor, etc. The kayak cost me $700 and came with everything, minus one pole holder and fish finder. The beast weighed over 80lbs and I never got used handling the thing. If felt like I was paddling the African Queen compared to my 22 lbs carbon fiber canoe and I got seasick inside of 30 minutes from the rocking. The worst thing is that I didn't catch anything before giving up and going back to my canoe. Caught more fish after going back to my canoe. If you don't mind lugging around the weight and the equipment and paddling that stuff through choppy water, you should be able to catch something. I gave up because it was just too much work.
As far as getting one, people are always selling their Kayaks so be patient and wait for one. Chances are the Kayak will come with all of the things you need to get started at a fraction of the price.
