Coming 22LR drought?
« on: March 29, 2020, 02:02:19 PM »
My friend mentioned a coming 22lr drought.

Something about 22LR has the lowest profit margin, so factories focus resources on the highest profit calibers til demand is satisfied.

So 22 LR production only increases at the very end.....after the demand of all the other calibers has flattened

When is it estimated that the 22LR drought will end?  I feel like it took at least 5 years for 22 prices come down to  about .04 per round.   Pre-sandy hook, 22 LR was .03/round for blazer

I’m profit taking on other calibers but not on 22.  I’m keeping all of my 22.  Unfortunately, I have only 100 rounds of 22 to share with my friends. The rest fell off the boat.

Someone just asked me if I had any 22LR for sale.  I told him $35 for 500 rds.  I could sell 5000 rds or so and still have a comfortable supply.  J Hara had Velocitor for $10/50 rds.

I think Kaleo Arms posted recently that they could bring in 22 for <$30 a brick.

Guessing he watched this because it says that almost verbatim.

Made me think about if I had enough but I'm in no position to stock up right now anyway.

.22 LR is also the hardest ammo to make. It requires special machines that cost more $ upfront. So there are only a few manufacturers who produce all the .22LR and they for the most part are not gonna buy any more of the expensive machines to fill a temporary increase in demand and then be stuck with machines sitting idle afterwards.

Centerfire ammo is much easier to assemble on various levels of machinery if you buy the components. That’s why people at home can reload their centerfire ammo themselves, but nobody makes their own rimfire ammo at home.

I am not an expert but I hope that makes sense.

In theory, how many cases of 22 Lr makes you comfortable?

I’m thinking at least 4-5 years worth or about 4-5 cases.
In theory, of course, since your stuff also fell off a boat

At the rate I shoot I'm ok with 2 cases--one to shoot/hoard, the other to profiteer from >:D

Actually, I think I have about 7-10K right now but its the typical mix of bricks and random boxes, some of the stuff is way older than I am, and I'm old now--younger shooters are calling ME "unko" now :wtf:

I feel comfortable with 12k rds,  ok with 9-10k, start to worry around 8k and panic mode at 5k.

Per my past comments, if you know how much ammo you have,  you don't have enough.
I have lot's of 22's. I don't know how many.  It's up to at least 5k, I have it stashed all over
and have to remember where its at.  In a state run by Democrats,  never put

I disagree.  To me it is very important to know how much I have, maybe not exactly, but to know within a couple hundred rounds.  I wish I could stockpile several 100k rds, but costwise and spacewise, that is not practical for me.  I do know I have enough to last a long time in a SHTF situation and I feel extremely comfortable with what I have now.

I keep inventory of my ammo
I still have 22LR from the last shortage.   :shaka:

Now I know to hit up if I need.   ;D

I have about 1000 rounds or so, but I also only have two .22 lr pistols.  Well, once since my dad's High Standard needs new springs.   :(

About half of the stash that I do have is my dad's.  Some I bet are older than I am.  I saw some Honsport labels on some boxes of various ammo that he had.

I had been long wanting a 22 rifle, but the last ammo shortage had me put that on hold and then other life stuff got in the way.  Just when I was about to get back on that train. . .  :grrr:

Be careful about replacing springs on HS pistols.  On the older models if you "disassemble" it the wrong way you'll end up with a locked up paperweight that is extremely difficult to fix.  I think all of the hammer models (HB, HD, HD Military, etc.) are prone to this problem.  Good news is there's lots of info on how to do it the right way, mostly on rimfirecentral.com

Good luck.

I make sure to rotate my ammo.  All are less than 7 years old.  I did use a box of 100 Federal 22LR that was bought back in the 70s and only had 4 that did not go bang.
