From the mouth of a Liberal....really, its actually favorable

A good read

"...Being a liberal millennial myself, years ago I decided that if I was going to have an opinion on gun control I needed to actually have some experience with guns.  What I learned during this experience fundamentally changed how I look at this issue.  Before, I had always seen reasonable gun control as any policy that reduced gun violence while still allowing for firearm recreation.  What I had failed to understand is that the discussion around firearms is not just about guns, it is an existential question regarding the relationship we want to have with our government and the level of civic responsibility we believe should be required of our countrymen..."
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

I agree. The term Liberal to me means that the person is moderate if not conservative in some views. In other words, we would certainly have many things in common with those I consider “Liberal”. However, it is the Leftists and Progressives that I consider to be closer to, if not full fledged Socialists.

I have had this view for over 40 years. I am saddened by the change I have seen good friends and family go thru while they went thru the transition from Liberal to Leftist/Progressive. I have always been able to have great political conversations with my Liberal friends and family. And I still do. It is a shame that some of my Liberal friends and family have transitioned their political beliefs towards Socialism. They still consider themselves Liberal but also Progressives. It is sad to me that we no longer have anything in common politically.

Yeah, Dave, like you say "it is a shame" when you look at your family and friends and based on logic and reason are forced to conclude and think "Goddamn you are a stupid fucking idiot!". Happy Thanksgiving!  :shaka:

I was trying to be nice. They may be “stupid fucking idiots” but they are still my family. A few of my more progressive friends and I have agreed not to speak about politics. And it has worked out quite well and I maintain good friendships with them. Unfortunately, my family has agreed to not talk politics and have not kept their promises when it comes to talking about politics. I have left family gatherings early when they have broken their promises. I refuse to lower my integrity and get into ridiculous arguments with them. When I agree to something I do my best to honor my word. They obviously feel differently.

BTW, this started back when I was a teenager and my father and uncle were still alive. They would have such screaming arguments at family gatherings that one day my sister-in-law requested they stop of she would leave. They didn’t and she did. This happened quite often and finally took hold and they basically stopped. Tho when she wasn’t there they would still argue. When I got old enough to start inviting family to my home my sister-in-law asked me to force my father and uncle to stop talking politics in my home and I agreed to it. I warned them and even kicked them both out of my house every time it occurred. They eventually stopped doing this in my house. I can yell louder than both of them. And it worked sometimes. But kicking them out worked better.

Fewer than two in 10 Americans looking forward to talking politics at Thanksgiving: poll

https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/417780-less-than-two-in-10-americans-looking-forward-to-talking

Just 15 percent of Americans say they are “looking forward” to talking politics at the Thanksgiving dinner table this year, according to a new poll.

The CBS News poll released Wednesday found that four in 10 Americans say they “hope to avoid” political discussion during Thursday’s holiday.

Almost half -- 45 percent -- of respondents said they don’t care either way.

Democrats -- at 40 percent -- were just slightly more likely than Republicans to say they want to avoid politics, compared to 37 percent of Republicans.

The 2016 election cut Thanksgiving dinners short. Will the 2018 election do the same?

https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2018-elections/2018/11/21/2016-election-cut-thanksgiving-dinners-short-will-2018-election

If your relatives make a quick escape from the dinner table this Thanksgiving, it may not be because you served them dry turkey and lumpy mashed potatoes.

A recent study determined that some travelers cut their Thanksgiving dinner short when they were spending it in a place that voted differently than where they lived — effectively avoiding dinner discussions about the presidential election.

In "The Effect of Partisanship and Political Advertising on Close Family Ties," researchers Keith Chen and Ryan Rhola gathered location data from smartphones to track holiday travelers' drives, then matched that to voting data.

The far left has perverted the term "liberal"

I saw a liberal friend post about how the middle is a farce because the right has moved so far right that asking someone to come to the middle really is just asking them to become conservative.

I wanted to point out how far the left has been moving left but she requested no arguments so I bit my tongue and will wait till it comes up again.

Only enough one of my high school friends is a staunch Bernie Sanders supporting socialist who is also a hardcore gun rights supporter  :wtf:

I wish there was a better way of classifying the different spectrum of people than just Left, Right or Center.  But this is very hard to do since there are so many issues that the chart quickly becomes complicated.

This website provides a nice way of classifying political leanings.

I think people should look at political leanings as a spectrum instead of an all or nothing, with us or against us mentality.

If we stick to a single issue (2A), then it makes the classification easier.

However, it would be good for the 2A community to properly classify the different political spectrums and work to make allies instead of enemies of each one.

Interesting read.
The author is more or less advocates the Swiss way of doing things.
However he misses the point, the 2nd amendment is a limit on the
government.  It says we have the right to use arms to defend ourselves
from a government, when that government has become tyrannical
and no longer represents us( like Hawaii Democrat government).
Everybody is the militia.  Historically militias were privately funded
and organized.  Regulated means equipped and trained,
not controlled by the very government we are supposed to oppose.
I'm a Vet, a hunter,  and I like the idea of everyone learning how to
safely use and accurately shoot guns, much like we teach civics
and sex education in our schools to make better safer citizens.
Unfortunately in the state of Hawaii,  until the Supreme court rules
on Hawaii's tyrannical  guns laws, we will be at the mercy of  an
out of control Oligarchy( Democrat party).
