That's been going on in Seattle since before I visited there in the mid 80s.  Bums (call them whatever you want) were sleeping all over the parks and wherever they could find a spot with some cover from the wether -- storm drains, bus stops, whatever.

I was told it's not so bad in the daytime, but to not go to certain parks after dark unless I want to get mugged or buy dope -- or both.

Seattle was said to be the place where everyone who "went West" to make a new life and failed wound up, because they found out CA was too expensive to just exist without really working.

I compare all other states are better than Hawaii, even CA and NY are better.  Why because they have issued at least ONE CCW permit every year.  Compared to Hawaii's ZERO.

Red Robins had some awesome burgers.  Fatburger opened up not too long before I moved back, but it was out on the east side and not really on my way anywhere.

Dicks was good, but a lot of things tasted good at near 2 am after drinking.  I thought for sure there would be riots a bunch of times.  Where there were super long lines and then all of a sudden, at closing time (I think 2 am), the workers delivered the last order then quickly and quietly walked away from the counter and the lights went out.

Worked at the Darigold plant. The socio-economic stratification is curious in Seattle. The poor people live on the bottom of the valley and the rich people live on the top of the hills about five blocks away. Everyone's basically mixed together.

Best when having a craving for greasy carbs.

Was finally able to watch the video.  That Jewish guy sounds like the MAC (Military Arms Channel) guy.

I lived in Seattle for 11 years and never heard about how it was supposed to be this "lofty city of promise".  While Seattle is certainly not perfect, I never heard that it was a "promised utopia".

That said, when did things get so bad?  They showed 3rd and Pine and that was right outside the old Bon Marche (was Macys when I moved back) where the needles were piled up on the street.    I used to work at 2nd and Pine and never saw any of that anywhere in downtown, but that was in the late 90s to early 2000s.  I admit when I lived there, I was in college and right after, so there was still the ignorance and naivete there, but I really don't recall things being like shown in the video.  Makes it seem like the movie New Jack City.

Heroin epidemic disguised as a homeless problem.  I remember seeing homeless, especially remember seeing them in the winter time when it's cold and rainy.  I don't recall it being anywhere like they showed it.  I had the impression that many homeless made their way "south for the winter".  I also heard many homeless made their way to Seattle from California (not sure what's the truth on the matter).

From what I've heard from friends that still live there, I have heard a lot of displeasure with the Seattle Mayor and state politicians, but don't really hear stuff like this.  Not to say it's not happening.  Many of my friends no longer live in Seattle.  Most live in the surrounding areas.  Bellevue, Redmond, Everett, Mount Vernon.  So maybe they are buffered from it to a certain extent.

"Counter culture" has always been a big part of Seattle.  From what I heard, the availability of drugs had a lot to do with sourcing from Canada.  A college friend was actually very much part of that.  Then there are a bunch of rising local stars that flamed out due to ODing.  I recall that from even HS time.  But I never saw it to the point where convenience stores had to close as specific times.  Maybe it was going in the parts of the city that I never went, but for a good part of the time I lived in Seattle, I was walking distance from many of the bad areas that they discussed in the video.

Wasn't into drugs but did grow up with the music. There was a local show in the mid 80s that highlighted local bands. Can't remember the name of the show. Mostly bands like Queensryche and such. At the UW in 1990, the telephone poles were plastered with event bills for venues like the Crocodile Cafe and The Showbox. I remember around 1995, there was am Asia-Pacific Economic convention with world leaders. When asked what the dignitaries wanted to see, they said grunge bands. Eventually, they built the EMP in 2000. There's also an awesome Sci-Fi museum next door.

This was my childhood. I graduated from Ferndale HS.
