Tripods - spiked feet
« on: October 14, 2019, 08:57:50 AM »
I’ve been looking at tripods and the carbon ones with ballhead from geekoto and K&F run about $150...but don’t have retractable spikes.  These are rated for about 25 pounds of load

For those running tripods, are spikes needed?

Some Sirui tripods have retracting spikes but they start at 225 without a ballhead.

(My friend said get the cheap one, duct tape and some nails)

Thank you, Tim

Retractible spikes are essential on a tripod. The vast majority of places I shoot react poorly to spikes scratching up their floors, but having the spikes option does increase the stability of the tripod for outdoor venues. The last thing you want is your tripod skating when you try to do a smooth pan!

Thanks Flapp!
Thanks Tom!
I’ll get a spiked tripod.

Ordered the $140 4.8lb alum sirui N2004E20 it’s about 1.5lbs > than the cf models but a lot < $$.

Looks nice! I'm not familiar with that brand. What's going on top of it?

Hi Tom
I picked up 7mm-08 tikka from Mrgaf to try goat hunting on the westside

It came with the original and a Boyd stock.  Plan to mount an arca Swiss plate on one of the stocks to use with the arca clamp on the ball head

Also ordered a v yoke just in case a rifle w/out an arca plate is being used.

Plan to also improvise a rifle clamp/vise similar to a Hog Saddle

Thank you, tim
