So i met this girl today that works at one off the senators offices and was explaining to me how this whole process works.
The session/year is only 60 days long. Therefore, there are deadlines on bills, so that the house and senate can swap bills and vote on them. The deadlines are coming up, she kept mentioning thursday. .
In order for a bill to be heard by a committee, there MUST be 72hrs prior notice for all members to attend.
- If a bill is sent to 2 committees, it must be passed by both committees before the deadline. The deadline for this is thursday if im not mistaken.
- If a bill is sent to one committee, it must be passed before its deadline as well.
The callander on the capital website does not list the first lateral cutoff, no surprise.

After the deadline, the bills are swapped from the house to the senate and vice versus. Here they listen to them and vote on them.
If a bill doesnt get pushed forward before the deadline, it gets to sit on the bench the rest of the year, and could possibly be reintroduced next year.
Therefore, keep an eye out for firearm related bills, because if they want to move forward, they will have to do it this week, or within next week so it will meet the deadline. They were probably scheduled, if being heard, last week sometime to keep the 72hrs prior notice.
If there is any chance of pro firearm related bills to be passed, we must contact our legislatures and encourage them to set up a hearing notification for the bills before it is too late. Many of the bills have 2 or more committees. Maybe put our efforts into a specific bill, like SB280, repeal 10 round mag cap?
As we all know, there are also ways to backdoor a bill without committee that we all need to be vigilant of.
This is what i learned today so i thought i would share. Its something i never knew, and thought others might benefit from it as well.
