I bought the Costco Special Sentry 1.6cf Safe a while back. I entered the combo today but it refuses to open... I get the "open" indicator but I don't hear the Solenoid/Actuator inside anymore. I emailed Sentry, hopefully they have something positive. Anyone know of any good Locksmiths if I need one?!?!?!
Thank you in advanced.

Damn, that sucks! Wishing much success in opening your safe! :shaka:

I have a torch and big crow bars if that helps.
I am very wary of electronic safes.

that's why I never buy electronic key pad safes! I'm old Skool and I have a combination safe!

Speedtek, is Barbara a Locksmith? I don't wanna call her and not know what to ask:-)

Yes she's a locksmith. Old school. She programs keys too for cars.

The battery may be almost dead, so it will light the lights but not kick the solenoid. A couple of years ago I read on a gun board about a trick you can use with an external battery connected to the safe body and the other terminal to somewhere on the keypad to "boost" the internal batteries. However, I can't seem to google it up now. Not very helpful, but if someone can dig up that technique, it would be nice.
I didn't really pay that much attention at the time, since I don't use safes and frankly would not trust an electronic safe anyhow.
ETA: See ETA below.
Amusing side note: My younger son's neighbor had his car battery go dead because they left something on inside it and the electronic lock wouldn't let the car open and the key was inside the car. I told him to get under it with extension cables to an outside battery and connect neg to car chassis and hit the starter terminal with the plus while the neighbor kept punching the remote control or the door combo, I forget which. Told him to be careful of sparks. Door lock opened right up and they could open the hood and give it a regular charge or jump start, I forget which.
Neighbor gave him 20 bucks.
But I didn't see a dime of it.
For decades I have kept spare keys to everything squirreled away everywhere.

ETA: I wonder if you could probe around on the keypad with a voltmeter to see if there's any voltage anywhere on the keypad (to the safe body). If you find it, that probably is the place to connect the external battery. Just thought of that.

The mechanism that unlocks the door may be stuck. Try giving it a few whacks with a rubber mallet or something while you are trying to open it up. For the money it might cost to have a locksmith come you could just pry it open yourself, and put the money towards something that would be reliable. Costco might even take it back once you pry it open and explain it did not work anymore.
-
no keyed backup?
on some of those keypads there's a hidden panel you pop open to access 9v leads to jumpstart. or there are terminals on the pad itself.
try look for either.
try the smack it with a rubber mallet trick too. some of those small safes you just drop it on the ground and the things pop open if get the angle right.

Here's what you do.
A lot of these safes have a weird safety mechanism,...
The turn handle needs to be turned completely to the disengaged position or the combination won't work.
I have one that I used to turn it as if I were going to open it, and left it in that position. The combination wouldn't open the safe.
When I turned it all the way to the "locked" position and entered the combo, it would open.
Give that a shot.

Have you changed the batteries? The batteries should be accessible from outside. Check your owner's manual for instructions on removing the keypad and installing fresh batteries. You can find most manuals on the SentrySafe.com site.
Good luck!!

Yes, I'm actually pretty good about that. thanks for all the suggestions.

can I join? ill bring the C4!!!! lol jkjk

Bummer! That's why I spent the extra $$$ and converted my last safe from digital to an old-school dial.

I have a Honeywell digital safe that I bought from Costco a few years ago, but it came with a backup key.
My batteries cannot be accessed from the outside.

Sometimes I have to do this or wang the handle completely back and forth.

How did you have this done?

How did you have this done?
I was lucky--I know someone who had a spare dial set and knows how to change out the locks. Bought the safe cheap because the previous owner couldn't get the electronic lock to work properly.

Make sure you let costco know. I don't know how to return a safe lol, and even moreso don't know how to return a safe with guns inside of it. But, costco has lifetime guarantees on all their sold products, minus electronics.

I will, thanks for the suggestion.

Tannerite? :D
In all seriousness, those Sentry safes are mostly fireproof, and not so much in the pry-proof department. On my old one the locking bolts were held by the plastic interior liner, so prying it open would be pretty simple.
-
I would talk to costco, let them know, then maybe explore cougar's option. Tell them you will be bringing it back for an exchange in two pieces lol.
-
I'm going to call Costco tomorrow and ask for the Manager, that way I can make him aware of my problem before I go mid evil on it. I have big ass prybars so if necessary I'm packin' :P I don't have the receipt but I'm guessing they have a record of my Cards purchases?!?!?! Whatever, I want access to my Pistols.

Maybe you can sue...a whole weekend without being able to shoot or hold your babies? Sounds like severe mental duress to me! :shaka:
-
What's worse is I have 1 in my backpack because it got locked OUT!! >:(

Day 3
;D

Leave a note on your door:
Helen:
Thanks for picking up the mail while we're in Las Vegas this weekend.
Please let Carl know I have his rifle in my safe. I didn't have a chance to return it before the trip. It's a little cramped with all my other guns, but it fit fine.
Also, tell the alarm monitor company I left the system disabled to prevent more false alarms while nobody is there. I'll schedule an appointment after next week.
Call if you have any questions. Wish us luck!! Aloha!!
See if that helps get your safe open! :D :D
-
I would pick it up and drop it a few times. Not high or anything. Just a few inches so it bumps when you drop it. Just to get it open so you can get your stuff out and return it
-
When I went to Honolulu Firearms to use the range the guy couldn't get the ammo out the safe cause the battery was dying lol. That one instance is what turned me off to electronic safes.

Would the locking mechanism be considered electronic?
Is it bolted down? If not, take precautions if you are taking a pry bar to it.
I think it is time for me to start looking at new safes.
I got locked out once, but luckily mines came with a backup key.
The key worked, but not so easily. It has always been on my mind since.

When they say electronics, I believe they are really referring to like TV / computers. I had read some stuff recently about their "satisfaction guarantee" when I was looking into a coffee maker; people were saying the pumps go out on the Kureig things, so to buy it from costco, because if it dies 2 years down the road, they will replace it. Recently, the lady there when I bought a printer told me it had a life time satisfaction guarantee, and to not worry about a square trade warranty.

After seeing the Lifetime Guarantee comments, I did some Googling. Seems the policy applies to most non-excluded items within a reasonable time frame, like 6-12 months. If you are not happy with the product then, they will take it back. After 2 years or more (the time frame of a blog post I read), they evaluate whether the item malfunctioned or had a defect. If not, they may refuse the refund. I guess they believe that you must have been satisfied for that long if you kept it, so giving a refund for everything they sell after many years of satisfactory use would be crazy.
Moral of the story: don't try to get a refund years later unless the item broke due to something other than abuse or accident.

At 1.6 cft it's not going to have much in it.............firearms wise.

They are actually pretty cool about returns.
I've never seen them refuse one.
My buddy returned a vacuum 2 years later because the motor burned out.

This is similar to most of the stories that I have read. Obviously, some people may abuse it, but overall consumers tend to be honest and not want to 'cheat' the system.

I didn't know they sold gun safes that small lol. The only gun safe I know they have is the big huge one that looks like it's 800+ lbs lol. I also didn't read the size :(
-
costco's return policy is second to none.
ive returned all sorts of stuff, including food on one occasion. ive even brought back assembled items that were so much hassle to disassemble and try to neatly repack i just brought the folded box and packing materials in a trash bag, and the fully assembled product on a flatbed cart
dont worry about not having the receipt. they have a backlog on their computer of your purchases for the last 3-5 years.

What's the model of your safe? I Googled "sentry safe battery dead won't open" and found this. I know you probably have, but try doing Google searches with various sentry safe-related search terms.

I think the best thing to do is have a 2A meeting at your house. Just have beer on hand......
then let each member take a crack at it.....
Guaranteed by the end of the night we will have it open!
-
Renee @ Costco gave me the green light to shread it, I'll still get the refund. Thank you Funtimes for the suggestions.

Score...see now you can have a 2a meet at your place (with beer per Dex) and we can have a crack at it without being concerned if we eff it up! :shaka: :D

How the fuck is this even relevant? You upped your post count now beat it.

Listen pal if you can't read the train of thought then that's your issue.
Funtimes posted that he'd be concerned about returning to COSTCO due to firearms (as in plural) being in the safe. I replied that it's probably not relevant as at 1.6 cft there is not much in it.
Do you store firearms in there? How many pistols (because we sure aren't talking rifles and/or shotguns)? Or am I guessing correctly and this is basically just jewelry, keys, CC, checks, etc.?
You will notice from Funtimes response to me that he thought we were discussing a much larger safe. I will also say that if the safe is bolted to your floor, then you aren't returning it to COSTCO anyway until the safe is opened and the anchors removed.
So if you thought I was getting a dig on you, I'm not. Grow up. If I'm hammering you you'll know it.
