Any center fire pistol round has the potential to over penetrate in Hawaii's T&G construction homes.

I think bullet selection is very important in what ammo you choose to use in your home defense pistol.

The answer to over penetration is to hit what you're shooting at.

I'm a big fan of #4 buck in the home.

The FBI recommended 5.56 over 9mm in regards to penetration.  I'll try and find the study we were given at my last instructor course.

I saw that.
It was based on the tumbling that is common with 5.56. It hindered penetration.

9mm or .45 are both pretty good choices, with a quality jacketed hollowpoint to reduce the chances of overpenetration.  For a while I was a big-time .45 Kool-Aid drinker, but I've since rethought things.  There's way too many guys pushing up daisies with 9 millimeter holes all puttied up by the mortician to discount 9mm as a valid choice for a defensive pistol.  On the other hand, that metamorphosis was mostly driven by the realization that even the venerable old .45 isn't that great either, and a long gun beats either choice hands down.

You're wrong you unintelligent mofo.

The 22 short is the king of all self defense rounds, because I said so.  :grrr:

Quality ammunition makes 9mm an excellent manstopper.

So, who's starting the .40S&W, .38, .357 mag, .44 mag, 12 ga, 20 ga, and blow gun "for home defense" threads?

I think we're covered for the airsoft replica pellet gun thread, as long as you are attacked in a graveyard!

Overpenetration not a problem:

I read that report I think, and saw some charts and whatnot.  I think Guns and ammo ran an article on it too.  Made me change my outlook on using my carbine for HD.

There was a video comparing the penetration of various handgun calibers and the 5.56 on youtube which seems to verify this. I'll post it if I can find it.
