For all those who has children in school K-12 or even in college, has anyone considered putting a Ballistic panel in their backpacks for protection? After all these shootings going on I decided I wanted to have my daughter protected, so I bought a Level IIIA 10x13 Ballistic Panel which is under 1lb in weight and fits perfectly in any backpack. I know we don't have shootings here like the mainland but I figure what the hell, a less then 1lb panel that she doesn't even notice wont do any harm. I guess I feel better SAFE THEN SORRY!

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
-
Hmm great idea. Where did you pick one up?
-
Smart thinking. Man someone should market that. You would make some bucks!!!! Especially from all the shootings that is happening...

Actually im in the process of marking this, let me know if anyone is interested cost is around $120.00 a panel!

I guess it's cheap extra protection, but IMHO a far better result would be from teaching people to be on alert and to look out for odd things. In other words try not to be in the situation rather than relying on a plate.

That's a great idea. I think there would be a lot of interest.
I think I'm interested. ( gotta talk to the wife  )

Until the school locks your kid down and the gunman bursts into the classroom and starts shooting.
With nowhere to run, at least it gives your kid the added protection.
Although knowing my kids, they would probably try to line the whole class up behind their backpack.

Keoni008, I might want a custom one made that I can bring around Honolulu with me everyday. Can you make me something like this?
Joking aside, I would like to see what you have. Sending PM.

Hardwire Bodyguard Level IIIA10x13 Ballistic Panels
Price:$89.95
Protect your children, family or yourself from shootings in schools, malls or the work place. Drawing on years of experience fabricating some of the military’s most advanced armor solutions, Hardwire has introduced the BODYGUARD.
The BODYGUARD panel is designed to fit into book bags, back packs and brief cases. The BODYGUARD provides a layer of ballistic protection from handgun fire and can stop multiple rounds. Manufactured with Dyneema® (a high performance polyethylene fiber), this board weighs less than one pound and meets the NIJ Level IIIA Ballistic testing standards.
You never want to be in a situation when you are threatened by gunfire, however, if you are, you’ll have a chance with BODYGUARD covering your back.
Features
Made Of Dyneema - Worlds Strongest Fiber
NIJ Level IIIA protection stops 44MAG, 9MM, 10MM, 45AUTO, 40S&W, 38 Special, 357MAG and more
Ultra-Light weight less than 1lb
Easily fits into a backpack or other bags to provide protection from gunfire
Simple, effective and affordable
Obviously omitted were RIFLE calibers in the description. So, another looney-tune with an AR-15 in a school or mall, and the effectiveness of this product is questionable.
How does the panel you are using compared to this?
-
Yeah I'd want one that can handle AK rounds at least.
-
We should see what the original mall ninja was using!

I see what you're saying, but most people don't wear their backpacks inside a classroom when sitting down.
When I talk situational awareness it's not just the kids it's all of us. Lot's of us walk through the day in a haze. The coworkers always tell me stuff happens when I'm with them. I counter that stuff happens all the time, I just happen to point things out to them.

I could be mistaken, but none of the current offerings afford protection against rifle rounds.
Nutnfancy was promoting some lightweight armor (manufactured by DKX) that weighs only 18oz, floats, and effectively stops rifle rounds.
As with any type armor purporting to defeat (offer protection against) handgun/rifle rounds, I would imagine that proper advertisement wording, product instructions, and disclaimers would be essential.
I'm think AR500 plate, but that is really heavy for anyone let alone a kid to carry.

Its almost similar, the difference between the 2 is the bodyguard model cant defend against a knife attack.
