Title: Suggestions please for ELBOW and KNEE PADS (tactical training use)
Post by: passivekinetic on August 17, 2013, 01:00:43 PM
Suggestions please for ELBOW and KNEE PADS (tactical training use).

This will be for my carbine course (Front Sight).

Please recommend brands and models.

I used to have these for my ROLLERBLADING when I was maybe 20 or 30 years younger (LOL) but I remember those were bulky and anyway I do not have them anymore.

Arc'teryx knee caps by far!  I've used them in couple of classes and they've been great. Lightweight and stay put. One range we used was lined with river rocks and kneeling on that crap was painful and really distracting.

Never used elbow pads.

I recommend the ones that you can put in the knee pockets of tactical pants.

A lot of the ones you strap on, just end up moving around and it can be distracting.

Can give example of such tactical pants? I am not even sure what to wear to the training.

Thanks for suggestion drck1000 but I went with KK's recommendation instead.

The Arc'teryx knee caps look great and I almost bought them, but turns out they cost $60 and for just a few dollars more I bought the TacLite Pro pants AND two pairs knee pads.

I had to double check how to measure men's pants lengths. I looked at my jeans but wasn't real sure. Googled around and now I ordered the proper ones. I almost ordered too long as I wasn't measuring my inseam and just the overall length. Doh!

I think the 5.11 pants will be good because I can wear them around town normally, otherwise the knee pads would just sit at home in a box.

Have not found any elbow pads though. Maybe I will just wrap my elbows in some tape. (duct tape?! joking).

If you want ones that are integral with pants, I would highly suggest Crye Precision. They have a plastic cap on them that protects from sharper things like rocks in both abrasion and just as a shield agains things hitting your kneecap. The caps have internal straps to adjust the proper height of the pads/caps. They are pricey, but there are sights where coupon codes are available.

I have a bunch of 5.11 pants and have the knee pads and unless your range is almost all grass, they don't do much. Once you have rocks, gravel or even hardpan, they aren't worth much more than wrapping a towel around your knee.

The Arc'terx caps can be found for less, but $60 is about the going rate. They don't move that much. Again, it's the plastic caps that are key. If you are on a grass range, I haven't felt the need for knee caps/pads. I will say that once you got a few bruises on your knees, you'll wish you had good quality caps, no matter how much you try to tough through it. In a multi-day class, it can help you concentrate on shooting and not feel the pain of certain shooting positions. Something I learned the hard and painful way.

Thanks man - I checked out the Crye and yes they are pricey! I will put them on the list for later.
