Title: Range Etiquette - WTF!!
Post by: bushidoaa808 on August 26, 2013, 03:25:17 PM
I was reading some of the comments on the "how many rounds do you guys shoot at the range?", and some commented on guys taking brass while they were shooting. I just recently had an incident with someone while I was teaching a class. This guy had some balls! First, he asks me if I reload or not. I tell him "Yes, I save all my brass". Then I catch him "reaching" between mine and my students legs with the broom trying sweep up our brass. When I confront him, he says those were his that missed his brass catcher. I can see if he missed a few, but this guy was trying to pick up nearly all of the brass on the ground. To top it off, my friend was trying to be proactive by having the students sweep up the brass as others were shooting, to limit the other guy's take. When we were having a group discussion about a type of pistol, the guy grab the dustpan (which was right at the bench next to us) and tries to take what was inside of it. When I said "Hey! What are you doing?" he said that as far as he's concerned, any brass on the ground or in the dustpans are free game. WTF!!!

Since when did common courtesy and common sense fly out the window?!?! Let's just forget the fact that on the ground or not, that's someone else's property. Hence, you're just stealing. There are a lot of guys that reload, and there are a lot that don't. Is it so hard for someone to just tap a person on the shoulder and say "Hey man, do you save your brass?" If they say "yes", you can just say "no problem, just checking" or, even better, be a cool guy and hand him some of his brass. That gesture alone tells him that you respect his property and you understand that he's saving his cases. If he says "no", thank him for the brass and help a brother out by policing his area for him. That's the least you could do for a guy who is basically giving you free money.

Respect and courtesy goes a long way in sports. As far as I can see, most everyone at the range has respect and courtesy for each other, but there are those few. If you see someone being a vulture, stalking a person while they're shooting, and snatching brass as it gets ejected, ask them politely if they have permission or tell them that they should ask the person shooting if it's ok. We're all there to have a good time, but I don't have a good time if I'm constantly trying to protect my property from getting stolen. Just some thoughts on these a$$hole$ who think this is acceptable.

Rule #1 - Touch someone else's gun is like touching someone else's woman...don't do it!!!
Rule #2 - If you don't know, ask.
Rule #3 - If they didn't ask for an opinion, keep it to yourself.

Any more common courtesy rules will be gladly appreciated, and very humorously enjoyed!  ;D  :shaka:

Thats kinda dick taking the brass from the pan, especially since he knew you guys were using it and it was in with your stuff, especially after being called out on it.

Rule of thumb for every range i've ever visited:

It is only acceptable to pick up other folks brass if they are clearly gone and not coming back (abandoned)
or, if they are still there, if you ask for permission.

Some ranges require you to "donate" the brass (indoor ranges).  Cuts down on range cost for all customers, and prevents potential for bad feelings if someone accidentally scoops another shooter's brass.

The last range I went to charged me just for the first half hour, and I was there longer than an hour.  Equitable trade:  brass for range time.

I hate when while I'm sweeping, people is trying to pic the brass out the dust pan. I was so irritated one time that I whip it right on the field....

The art of retrieving brass is a delicate, sensitve process since brass doesn't neatly pile up in one location all by itself. Sometimes they fly two stalls over and get mixed in with other people's brass. I use a brass catcher to catch my brass but sometimes the brass misses the catcher and flies onto the floor below.  I haven't quite figured out how to best handle the situation except to ask the guys around me if they collect their brass. If my brass flies over to someone else's spot two stalls down, I just let it go unless i'm shooting a round that's not common like .32 ACP in which case I just go hunting for the individual brass. Since you are limited to loading 5 rounds on the target pistol side, looking for 1 or 2 stray casings is usually not a problem. What would be an equitable way of dividing up the brass that's mixed together when you don't have a brass catcher or when your shells miss the catcher?

My reply?  "As far as I'm concerned, anything left sitting on the bench is fair game.  You keep the brass; I'm taking your guns and your ammo."

if we come up with 10, I'll engrave it on a rifle or shotgun barrel, so if we have a shooting competition, Hdf day, fun shoot, us shooters can touch it for good luck!!!!!!

We should pick one day the brass thieves are there, a bunch of us show up on whichever range they are stalking, and every one of us, ONLY SHOOT ALUMINUM CASED AMMO (nothing in brass cases!)!!

It would be fun to just watch them walk away .... then we switch to brass again!!

Carry a fat sharpie and mark your case head if you are keeping your brass.... only takes a few seconds to do.

Pick an odd color so it's more distinctive.
You can even use a 2 color scheme.

Maybe if you were bored enough you could use sharpie-s and color the entire brass a rainbow.  or maybe use nail polish.  lol.  Make sure to wink at them when they try and steal your brass.

Sounds like some of these people at the range you guys on oahu go to are something else. Between the guys acting like seagulls taking the brass before it hits the ground and the guys who show up and hog a bench all day to shoot 6 rounds like its their personal living room.. WTF.

I don't know what runs though some people's minds these days

This is why the "once a year pimp slap" needs to be instituted.

A law which allows you to pimp slap some shithead who desperately deserves it.

The police show up, because invariably the shithead is a whiny bitch that will call the police.

They check your record and you haven't used your annual pimp slap, so you're free to go about your business.

One day at the 25 yd range, I was shooting .45 auto.  I was in need of fresh brass for reloading, so I took out 4 boxes of blazer brass.  One box was the 45 auto with the small primer.  I noticed an older japanese guy walking around with a dust pan, but I didnt think anything of it.  by the time I was finished, this clown cherry picked all of the .45 auto large primer brass, and left about 35 with the small primer.  I asked him if he picked up my brass, and he just mumbled and walked away.  Yeah sure, from the outside it may look like I only shoot factory ammo, but that brass was supposed to replenish my inventory.  Now after I empty every magazine, I sweep it up, or if I am shooting with friends, we pick it up as soon as it hits the floor.

And another thing....
On the rifle side, I've been on the waiting list and had to wait over an hour while there were open benches not being used.  People were reserving these benches, for their friends who would show up late, and the range officers do nothing about it.  And when the entire group is there, they shoot about 1 round every 5-10 minutes and talk to their buddies around them who just so happen to be on the same shooting schedule.  3-4 benches are being occupied, but nothing is happening on them.  is it asking too much for these guys to just use one bench?????

I've been going to that range since 2004, Its been crazy the past few years.  I rarely bother with the rifle or pistol side on the weekends anymore.  On the bright side, I've gotten back into shooting trap over this time.

The only time I take other peoples brass is
1. they offer it to me because they saw my brass catcher
2. it doesn't look like they care about it so I ask
3. they don't have the courtesy to catch or block their flying brass and it constantly hits me. If it hits me, it's mine

one time pistol side wasn't crowded at all.
plenty open spaces.
but this dude takes the spot right next to me on the left, even when there was about 9 open spots to the left and plenty to my right.
but he decides to go right next to me, so his brass is hitting me in the head every single shot, he has no brass catcher.
this pretty much pisses me off.
so I switch my brass catcher from my right side to my left.
now i'm catching all his brass.  and i switch to my revolver so i dont need the catcher for myself.
needless to say, dude didn't stay too long.   O0

Yup.

Most of my AK's eject at a 45 degree angle forward. Into the grass where I can't sweep it up.

I do have one AK though that ejects HARD right.

If the brass thief is on your right, I'll let you use my AK to run him off.

Every person that I've ever seen that gets mad over flying brass has ZERO Military combat experience.

I can't imagine someone on a combat deployment getting bothered over flying brass.

Man, if you're shooting .338, I'd think you'd strangle anyone trying to run off with your brass! I had someone send one of their friends (obvious new shooters) to "collect" my brass while I was on the silhouette side once... I told him he could take the .22lr. The guy swept it up and walked back, his friend looked down into the dust pan and back up to me, caught the hint...

Maybe that oth poster is right: we find out who it is and shoot nothing but Blazer or Tula around him. Extra credit: blackpowder shooters on either side of him so has to deal with that too, no matter which way the wind blows...

i think it is better range etiquette to have a brass catcher than not have one.
it also makes for easier clean up.
and people won't steal your brass.
its an inexpensive tool that makes life a lot more tolerable at the range.

fences make good neighbors
at the range, the catcher serves as a fence.

FYI:

I just bought 2 of these.  Best brass catcher I've seen for the money ($14.95), and it not only fits my ARs, but my 10/22s, and my AK (haven't fire the AK, but the bag covers the port where I need it to).

Any rifle or shotgun with the place for the velcro band to wrap around close enough to the ejection port should work.  The zipper can be used to place the bag in a can or box to funnel the brass into a bigger collection container, or use it to empty the bag without removal from the weapon.

On the topic of brass catchers, I always bring mine even though I don't reload. It would be really nice if the rifle side would have nets installed like they do on the silhouette side. A cheap improvement that would pay large dividends.

Shooting Times ran an online article on shooter etiquette http://www.shootingtimes.com/2013/03/19/a-gentlemans-guide-to-old-school-gun-range-etiquette/ (http://www.shootingtimes.com/2013/03/19/a-gentlemans-guide-to-old-school-gun-range-etiquette/)

Public Shooting Ranges are where people should practice that Heinlein proverb, "An armed society is a polite society".

The idea of getting back at people by raining hot brass or blasting them with your muzzlebrake is childish and potentially dangerous. It takes only one lawsuit to shutdown Koko Head to public shooters.

Rather than expect the city to build protective bubbles for each shooter, I recommend that shooters bring brass catchers or some expedient item to deflect the brass.

You can control the ejection pattern on an AR by trimming the ejector coil spring.

WTF!!!

At the pistol side the people who reload that have brass catcher
Dont cry about your brass GET A BRASS CATCHER!!!!  It hit the ground ITS FREE GAME you cant tell whos is whos unless you paint your brass orange
WTF about the  dust pan, swep it up take your brass out then PUT THE DUST PAN BACK ITS NOT YOUR !!!!

Hey pal. WTF! First, we had a brass catcher...2 in fact. Second, these are new student who don't know safety rules, let alone to put the pistol close enough to the catcher to catch the brass. Would you rather me teach them to get close to the net or to keep the muzzle pointed down range? Third, this was happening AFTER I talked to the guy nicely, and he disregarded what was said. This has NOTHING to do with if you leave things in a dustpan or your ideas that if it's on the ground it's fair game. Read the post carefully before you make j-ass comments. So if I see you drop a magazine on the ground during a mag change, it's free game and I can take your mag? Of course not. The point is that people have to be considerate of each other. I'm not saying that if you shoot 100 rounds you should take home 100 cases. I'm saying that if you shoot 100 rounds, and speak to the person next to you, you should go home with at least most of your cases, not none. And  BTW, we were actively sweeping brass. My student stopped sweeping and leaned it up to the bench right next to us because I called them into huddle to discuss the safety features of a particular pistol. We weren't just hogging the dust pan. We were sharing it with all the other shooters around us. Everyone in our area was sweeping up, dumping them into their own bags or boxes, then putting the pan and broom back so the next person could use it. Again, common courtesy of communicating with others and respecting their space and property. Nuff said, not worth it. Sending PM.

I used to pick up and save my brass. Now I pick them up and give it away. But the majority of people I've dealt with at the Ukumehame range are courteous and will ask if I'm saving my brass and will not grab loose brass at will. They see I burn through boxes of ammo and will see piles of shells but most will not pick my brass without asking first. Guys with muzzle brakes next to me I'll just wait until they are done blasting away then I'll go back to my table and shoot. I'm patient and tolerant and will step aside as I understand that people will have them mounted. Muzzle brakes are nasty and I will stay out of the blast area as much as possible. When they are done, I'll continue.

^^True, even experienced shooters would rather focus on getting lead on paper instead of brass in their net. Having a net up/load notebook/bullet boxes all pretty much say to me that the guy is keeping his brass, regardless if it hits the ground or not.

Why do these thieves act so rude?  One rationale might be:  they are trying to not only steal from the shooter, but also from the other brass vultures!

So, I'm starting to envision a cottage industry where you hire young kids as "brass chasers."  It might not save you money, but it would be worth watching the thieves get mad when these little runts are zooming in front of them grabbing the brass the thieves believe belong to them!

Poetic justice!!

Flying brass is somewhat analagous to being seated next to a tantrum child on an airplane: you tolerate the annoyance even more if there is a conscious effort to stop the child. Shooters are at different stages of experience with each having different level of financial resources. We all know, having been there and done that, that it takes time to acquire equipment. Having gadgets like fancy brass catchers, nets, stands etc. takes money and even time to fabricate. Being conscious of the problem in the first place commonly results in the eventual acquisition of brass catching equipment. In the meantime, shooters are left to their own devices. Shooters, therefore, should not be faulted for not having proper brass catching equipment; they should be faulted for not attempting to deflect their brass.  I laud the efforts of novice shooters who are conscious of the annoyance that hot, flying brass creates and try to use what they have at their disposal to  minimize it like ammo cans, back packs, gun cases and wood frame targets. The RO's are also instrumental in teaching range etiquette and in bringing consciousness to the sometimes unconscious minds.

==================
I am going to have to disagree with this statement. If a shooter wants to pack "lite" to the range, that is perfectly acceptable. I have often gone to the range with nothing more than a pistol and a box of ammo in a small bag. No catcher, no deflector.

It is not a range requirement. Therefore no person should be "faulted" for ejecting brass on the next person.

I could list all kinds of examples, but what you basically stated is, as long as the range, state, city, or county doesn't make a rule about something, it's okay to do, and the person should not be criticized?

I guess common sense, common courtesy, and other societal behaviors have to be regulated by some authority before I'm allowed to fault someone for being too self-centered to care about, or learn, established rules of etiquette regardless of setting?

And to think I've been holding doors open for people and treating people with courtesies like "please" and "thank you" everywhere I go my whole life even though no legal authority mandated it!

What a fool I am!!

I agree that ejecting brass is just part of the experience.  What I do not agree with is the notion that there has to be a rule for everything that every shooter should try to incorporate so everyone has an enjoyable time at the range.

Many ranges (private, mostly) install dividers between shooters to, among other things, deflect ejected brass from your neighbors.  Maybe we should do a "self-help" project and either help install permanent ones, or at least a net and collection trough between stations.

It's silly to make every one of 10 shooters at the same station over the course of a day provide their own brass catcher.

Well, following that same train of thought, saying "Please" "Thank you" or "Excuse me" are not required by law, but they're general human niceties.  We should strive to be that community that is respectful and considerate of everyone else.

Ah.......this used to be the jade ring to the head before.........and it was issued several times a year.

I reload and I don't have a brass catcher.  While you may not know exactly which is all of your brass, you know you just shot X amount of cartridges.  I pick up X amount of casings.  The guy sweeping up everyone else's brass with the intent on reselling them is doing nothing other than stealing.  They know how much they did/didn't shoot.

On the issue of brass, its a common courtesy to not take someone's brass. But not all people have that mind set, so its your responsibility to ensure that you can account for and protect your brass.

If you know people are going to take your brass, and you do nothing to counteract that after the first or second incident, then you are at fault as well.

I disagree.  It's not common courtesy.  When people take your property without your permission it's called theft.  It's just like dropping quarters on the ground.  People take them it's theft.

I wonder if Range etiquette is taught at hunter education or firearms safety classes?  I doubt it...but might be a good topic to add to the course, since it is part of shooting or safety....like you don't want to shoot when somebody is shooting their .50 cal rifle, or hot brass hitting a shooter right next to you, etc.   A lot of these new shooters do not really know range etiquette, so maybe we need to teach these guys, instead of kicking their asses (ok, some might deserve it ;)We want to promote our sport  in a positive manner, so that our sport with survive and thrive in the future.   We already have all these negative stuff about guns and gun owners, so we do not more fuel for that fire.  We want to promote a positive, safe, fun, and friendly gun culture...just my 2 cents :shaka:

I use brass catchers.  I also reload, so if I see that the guy next to me isn't saving his brass, I'll ask to pick up his brass and there's usually no problems--either he wants it or he doesn't.  If the brass is on the ground in front of the benches I'll usually wait until the person leaves, and then pick up what's there, if it's something I want.

There's a guy at the silhouette side that  acts like all the brass on the ground belongs to him--he's one of the range rats and I'm pretty sure he sells the brass to the recyclers.  He's an ass, plain and simple.  I've taken to marking my pistol brass with a sharpie if I'm going to shoot silhouette.  Guys like him degrade the shooting experience for all, particularly newbies.

At the pistol side you'll see that almost every one of the old timers or serious target shooters have those large range boxes--in addition to making it easier to transport all of your stuff  it serves as a pretty good barricade against flying brass.

I accept the risk going to the range of having occasional hot brass flung at me. It happens. Adapt, Darwin,  iChing
I've had my share of burns - burns that bubble into a blister later. I don't get mad at the shooter responsible for shooting but some people are obviously out there to do just that. For example, the few times that I got burned with hot brass (back of my neck, in my sleeves - both blistered up) was on the left side; prone, where there are no benches. I'm shooting sitting and a guy shows up with a bionic ninja KAC rifle to my left and unloads a 30 rounder into the berm. As a result of his awesome mimicry of Travis Haley, hot brass is raining on me and one is lodged in my jacket during a 10 round string (5 and 5). I fish it out. The guy does his drills, gets scoldings from an RO and leaves. This is one example of not just range etiquette but being a Piers Morgan obnoxious arse.
Again, I accept the risk and I never scolded the guy (the RO did for loading more than 5 and rapid firing) but if your actions are repeatedly affecting your neighbor in a negative way then either an apology or some corrective action is in order.

silhouette side a few months ago was a little crowded so i had to wait.  no big deal.  i'm the next in line for a bench.
so i see this guy cleaning up his stuff getting ready to leave.
so i think this will be my bench.
low and behold his buddy just parks and walks up with his gf and gets the bench from his buddy that leaves, and snakes my spot.
RO doesn't say anything.  and really no big deal, i just wait another 5 minutes for the bench right next to dude with the gf.
so he brings out a 44 and he's all smiles.
so i just stand back and watch as he shoots the 1st 3 shots 10 meters short of the target into the dirt.
I literally LOL as i see him totally miss bc he's flinching.
karma gave me some payback that day watching that dude flinch in front of his gf he was trying to impress.   ;)

Similar situation happened to me a couple months ago. Was waiting for a bench at that side. Guy cleaning up while talking on the phone. His two friends rolled up and took the bench his friend was saving. Few mins later the guys directly to their left leave and my buddy and i take that bench. We werent even planning on shooting .45 but my friend has a SA XDs45 that throws brass a mile away. so we start shooting mag after mag, laughing inside as these guys get hit over and over. We could overhear them complaining about it until they packed up and went to the pistol side. Dont think theyll do that again.

I think timers / meters could be installed just like at some tennis courts to prevent bench squatting.  It's our only freaking range, with extremely limited hours of operation and some people have no consideration for others so give 1-2 hours timeslots or something.  Just an idea.
