Title: First time at Rifle Range
Post by: 841gun on September 12, 2013, 07:11:10 PM
Hey all going to the rifle side for the first time.

I see that the height of the target can range from "24 to "80.  any disadvantage/advantages to certain heights?  I made mine around 34".

thanks in advance

It's all preference, people can be really be creative on what they put on their target frames.

thats the kind of info i was looking for lol, thanks J

also do u really have to shave off 12" on the  bottom?  BigK was telling no need cause only about 2" go in the ground.  Anyone run into anything weird out there?

You can put maybe 6" in the pipe if you want.  I know more then 2" will fit in there.  Depends on how tall and heavy you make your target stand.  2" may hold it or not.  If you used 2x2 stock you do need to knock off the corners to fit them in the pipes.  At least the ones I've used.  I don't know if all the pipes are the same size or there's any variance.  There's usually lots of scraps around on the ground too if you need a wedge or 2 to tighten up your stand.

there are a lot of jacked up pipes in the ground... take a sharp knife just in case you have to shave the legs off at the bottom.

just tell the RO this is your first time, they are super cool and help u anyway they can.... just don't cross the yellow line during a cease fire no matter what....

there are steel targets so if you get bored with paper shoot the steel....

don't forget to have fun and blast away!!!!

so is it kinda safe to say that if i leave about 6" using the 2x2 post that any height wont really matter?

The height doesn't really matter so long as you have those couple inches of clearance at the bottom.  The main thing is to have the width measured correctly so each leg can fit into the pipe.

If you make it too tall at the 50 yard line you won't be able to shoot your target at 100
lol
