KHSC pistol range 25 yards
Ruger Mark III Hunter 5.5 inches barrel 22lr
Federal Auto Match .22 1200 fps
12" target
I noticed the sight is off every time I took the pistol apart to clean.
-
loctite the sight screws if possible to avoid coming loose...or tighten the nut behind the gun (just kidding)... ;) :shaka:

i put on some new glass on my 30-06 savage axis. the bushnell scope that came with the savage as a package was junk.i put on a nikon buckmaster 4.5 x 14 x 40. very pleased with the setup. bore sighted at the house then went to the range. 1 shot at 50. adjusted. then moved out to 100 with 3 more shots. the group is the 2nd 3rd and 4th shot. quarter sized. adjusted again. bullseye 5th shot. took down a deer the next day. If you are looking for a rifle in budget rifle category strongly recommend the savage axis.

I went to check out the activities for Nat'l Hunting and Fishing Day. It was just like the shooting sports fair, but not as crowded.
Anyhow, I shot a few rounds on the pistol side after that.
Here is a pic and something to chew on:
Left target is about 50 rnds of 45 acp mixed ammo, including rejected cast heads, reloaded fmj ball, Trap-100 loads, ww231 loads. All full power ammo.. or close to it.
All shots taken 2 hands unsupported at 25 yds.. Most slow fire, some semi-rapid fire. The point being that the 45acp is very forgiving and easy to load for.
Right target is 9mm from my home defense gun, a short bbl SW 9mm. The ammo was a mix of +p ball and some +P+ 115gr JHP.
I bring this thing out maybe twice a year to make sure the mag springs are all good.
I do not normally run hot loads nor keep +P ammo in the gun at home.
The gun is nearly stock except for tritium sights.
The hot ammo I was burning off shoots very low in comparison to normal ammo. Hence a cluster of shots low in the white.
I had to hold at the top of the black to compensate.
Most all handguns will do the same thing.
All shots taken 2 hands unsupported at 25 yds.. Most slow fire, some semi-rapid fire.
The trigger on that pistol is bitchin' hard. So I have to practice with it once in a while.
But it's the same type of gun that HPD authorizes for off-duty carry so it is legally defensible.

KHSC pistol range 25 yards
Ruger Mark III Hunter 5.5 inches barrel 22lr
Federal Auto Match .22 1200 fps
8" target
The pistol was accurate enough to shooting a quarter 6/10 when I left yesterday. When I shot today, I felt the sight was a little off (a too high to the right). Need to adjust it again. Is the pistol or just the way I'm aiming is not consistent? mmm...

Thanks oldfart! I was looking at that big hole on your target and was gonna ask if I could get some pointers from you sometime.

Anyone breaking into my house will have to deal with a lot more surprises than just an XD9.

The big hole is from bigger bullets. ;)
Can you shoot like that coming up from a low-ready position under a clock?
At 25 yards, try one shot in 3 sec. Then try 1 shot it in 2 seconds.
Then try 2 shots in 3 sec.
Challenge your friends to a contest. Loser buys lunch.
There is nothing like a little friendly competition.
I remember some years back, the pistol range was closed so we all had to shoot handguns on the rifle side.
We played a golf ball game. We threw a golf ball out about 20 yards and took turns shooting it.
The first guy to hit it past the 50 yard line is the winner. I used the same SW 9mm pistol with 147 gr.JHP ammo.
The range was more fun back then.

Nice. Get some Lapua instead of G.I. brass and I bet it'll tighten up

Thanks spanner. I got some LC match brass I was gonna try before I think about spending around 80 bucks on lapua brass.

Here's some old targets I kept around. It's from Royal Hawaiian Shooting club. Went by during this past apec. First time shooting these guns so no laugh. Consistently inconsistent I call it.

If its 45 then must be a USC or converted UMP

The M852 brass with the knurling around the case near the base is pretty good stuff. You also could give Berger bullets a try. I haven't tried any .308s myself, but some say that they're better than Sierras.

S&W 686 6" revolver- 50 rds of .38
Ruger Mark III Hunter-100 rds of 22lr
Glock 22 - 20 rds of .40 and 20 rds of 9mm (change barrel)
Two 8" targets.
Bullets were just flying all over the place. Seems like the more I practice the worse I get. Maybe I just need to take a break and reevaluate.

I think I did pretty good today. I realized all my gun sights are good, just my handling is poor. I need to find new techniques to practice.

I think all 3 shots were fired at one time.

3 round burst ;D

^^^ first shot went thru the dime and flared out the back to grab onto the cardboard. cardboard is the thin dense type like the old cardboard that the range used to use.

Using my 22LR Rim Measuring Tool I figure I would do some test shots.
Federal Auto Match 22LR
Gun: CZ455 & 50 Yards 10-15mph winds.
Waited on each shot for the wind to die down.
I will do some more testing this weekend with a more scientific approach
I am surprised that the Federal Auto Match is between .039" to .044" with the Majority in the .040" to .043" range. Best grouping is .042"
Lapua Match ranges from .038" to .046" best grouping is with .042"

Not to be a buzz kill but unless you are in an indoor range with no wind and clamped down in a vise it's impossible to due any comparison with accurate results for something like this. I mean you can tell differences in between good and bad ammo. or ammo you're gun likes outdoors with some wind, but subtle differences in rim diameters takes specifics that just can't be done in that situation. I'm assuming you are talking about the grouping sizes in the picture you put up ?

Considering that .22LR headspaces off the rim, and that .22s can have as much as .055" of rim space (especially if the bolt face hasn't been de-burred), and that facing a .22's bolt to bring the rim space down is a time-tested way of improving accuracy on semi-auto .22s, it is certainly plausible that selecting rounds with the same rim size will allow the bullets to enter the throat more predictably, giving you substantially better accuracy.

Beg to differ. Even out doors in the wind, you'll be able to tell what ammo your .22 likes the best. That CZ ought to be putting them near in one hole at 50 yards with the ammo it likes.
-
I have been playing with this for a few weeks out at koko head. I have done random ammo tests and grouped rim size test. And my results have been pretty consistant.
I understand the wind to be a factor. But just gotta wait till it settles.

I did say you will be able to tell the difference in what ammo your .22 will like if you read it. I said for checking other small differences you need a controlled environment and a gun vise. Exact repeatable shots can't be done with wind of any kind period. We can just agree to disagree I suppose. :shaka:
Also 1 group of 5 could just be luck. Most like to see results just like any ammo test 3-5 groups of 5.
