Title: For those of you who don't know this about the silhouette range
Post by: Jbaroune on September 24, 2013, 12:34:39 PM
A couple of friends and I went to the silhouette range this weekend. I knew the Range is  privately owned but I just assumed that the rules were the same as the pistol side. Anyway I found out that pistols can be loaded to capacity. all  10 rounds and rifles can be loaded to 10 rounds. Unlike the pistol and rifle range where you can only live five.  Just thought I tell everyone who didn't already know

Is silhouette more fun than target?

I always shoot at the target range. But once in a while I go over to the silhouette range because it's fun to shoot metal objects at different distances. Plus you don't have to repair your target.  So yes I think silhouette is more fun the only downside is it cost five dollars to shoot

I been nagging them to allow 9mm rifles.

Keep nagging them. Would love to do some 9mm rifle shooting. Gives me a reason to buy another gun (for my son)

Heck, I don't see why they wouldn't allow all pistol caliber carbines.  Would love to take my 38/357 lever guns out there

I also shot only 5 shots at the silhouette side

Let me get this straight.

1. Pistols - Any size caliber
2. Pistols - Max capacity magazines even up to 33 round extended magazines?
3. Rifles -  Up to 22lr
4. Rifles - 10 round capacity

Let me get this straight.

1. Pistols - Any size caliber.  Yes

2. Pistols - Max capacity magazines even up to 33 round extended magazines?  Hawaii state law applies here. Any magazine over 10 rounds in a pistol is a felony

3. Rifles -  Up to 22lr. Only 22lr

4. Rifles - 10 round capacity.         Yes

I'd love to shoot the steel with a 357/38 lever gun as well.  That would be a lot of fun.  Not really sure why they don't allow it and I was surprised that they don't.  Seems logical to allow a pistol caliber lever gun.

Oh OK, the way it was worded I thought we had a loop hole.  How come only 22lr? You can't use something smaller like .17 or .177 air rifles?

This question keeps popping up.  I've asked, as have many others.  The answer I get is that the club is operated by, and for, a club that does handgun silhouette competition.  The rules of their range reflect the rules of their sport.

Depending on which club member you ask, some say .22 LR only, others say any rimfire is ok.

This is the answer I got.

I took my PC9 there and shot it for about three hours before anyone noticed it wasn't a 22.

I was salty but it is their range and their rules so I didn't bring it any more.

In can be but not as bad as the rifle side.   I seem to always get a spot at the pistol & silhouette sides. Rifle seems to always be full.

college and NFL football has helped too

Yup. My ammo was disappearing fast so i put 1 mag away and just used 2. Loading  only 5 at the range has its benefits.

Try go Schofield, loading 30 or 40 round mags and rapid firing. You going say wtf, I just did 500 rounds in one hour.

I have no idea who runs it. Someone on this for must know. All i know is its ran by a club which is why they charge $5 to shoot and regulate their own rules.

Well, you could join the Hawaii SASS (cowboy action shooting group).  We shoot metal the last Sunday of each month in one of the action bays.

From kokohead website:

The Handgun Metallic Silhouette range is operated by the Hawaii Metallic Silhouette Shooters Association.  Metal targets from 50m - 200m.  Any caliber handgun.  .22 rimfire rifles may be fire on this range.

instruction period in the am
open shoot after that

safety rules apply, but other than that, as long as it's legal, it's ok
well, i would think that larger calibers than .308 would be silly (and expensive) since we're shooting from 5-15 yards

Every time I've gone they let me shoot 17HMR in addition to 22LR.
I always ask first though.

Thought I might push my luck next time and ask about 22WMR.
Or is this a bad idea ?

Just curious How is it cheaper?  You can load 10 rounds so you shoot & faster and you have to pay a $5 fee just to shoot. Other sides are free.

I just meant that shooting .22lr vs any of my centerfire calibers.  I know I can always shoot my .22lr on the target side, but then I ALWAYS end up bringing my larger calibers along as well.  If I tell myself I'm staying on the plinker side all day, I just stick to my .22lr's.

I'm partial to Rugers, but thats just me.
I have a Ruger single Ten and Ruger LCR in 22
i like shooting the single ten with 5.5 inch barrel.  I really like that gun.
i think for just plinking 4-6 inch barrel is good.
S&W is also a brand you cant go wrong with.
but if you're just looking for a plinker to shoot cheap ammo, any revolver will do the job.
seen a Taurus 9 shot 22 that looked nice.
i also saw a  cheaper Taurus 6 shot at YG, for around $300, but this was several months ago.  its sold now.

Cool. Thanks for the info.  I really like snub nose  revolvers but the accuracy plinking suck. Ill try and find a 4" barrel

yea, my LCR is only 1 7/8 inch barrel.
25 yards is difficult to hit the bullseye with the u notch sights
but i can hit the silhouettes at 50m with it.
but its so much easier with my 5.5 inch barrel.  much more enjoyable at the range.
i wish i could plink in my back yard, then the snub nose would be great at a closer range.

You should try the powder less ammo from Security Equipment it's only 700fps. It will not cycle a semi auto but it should be perfect for revolver. I'm not too sure how loud it is but maybe quiet enough to play in your backyard

In a revolver, too loud for backyard.  in a rifle, it's quieter than a spring-driven airgun.  If you have a bolt, lever, pump or hinge action, no worries about the cycling.

Henry lever actions are designed to feed and .22 cartridge.  Their full-sized rifles hold 15 .22 LR, and close to twice that of the Super Colibri.  Awesome living room fun!
