I only shoot maybe about once a month and i have a decent amount of ammo stored for "just in case." my handgun ammo is stored in one of those locked stackon metal gun cabinets with my guns and my rifle ammo is under my bed. I recently had a discussion with someone who advised me that storing ammo for too long in hawaii the humidity can cause problems and it can go bad? is this accurate or no? for how long would it be good for in this climate? or what do you guys do to prevent against the humidity? thanks

Use ammo cans and desiccants.

I've stored ammo for 20+ years in ammo cans, in a cool dark closet, and it shoots fine.

As long as your ammo is stored in a cool dry place, its fine. I throw some desiccant packs and keep one of those pellet moisture absorber containers with my ammo to be sure. Just don't leave your ammo outside uncovered lol

Not too sure now but I kept my ammo inside the safe with some in original packages and ammo cans but has golden ? heating rod inside the safe. Am I doing it incorrectly ? Expert advise needed.Thanks.

I use the plano marine dry boxes, they have a nice rubber seal. Plus dessicant packets I get in random purchases

Bok808, that should be fine. If it keeps your firearms rust free, the ammo should be fine as well. If you are storing outside of the safe-ammo cans and desiccant as previously noted are best. The desiccant packs only work well in a sealed environment, so be sure that if you get a ammo can that the rubber seal is good.

You want to keep your ammo in a cool place.
I wouldn't use a heating rod in the safe where you keep ammo.
It will degrade the components faster than a cool environment

How about in the cooler or broke ref... Temp should be constant and cool. Same for powders

As long as you have desiccant that should be fine

thanks guys. i got all my ammo organized and in ammo boxes with the moisture absorber packets as well as sealed my gun safe and put some in there. my question is i have a box of the 1000 federal loose .223 thats unopened in the plastic bag inside of the cardboard box. Should it be fine sealed in the unopened plastic bag? for how long is it good for in there. ?

I wouldn't store the 5.56 ammo in that loose bag, suggest you place it in an ammo can as you did with your other ammo. That plastic bag isn't airtight, and offers no protection against humidity.
