What is your focus? If you are looking for something combat oriented with the most transferable skill sets, PM K3OLA about getting in touch with local Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) schools, specifically those that focus on Kali; this is what the big boys learn, higher up on the food chain, i.e. Army SpecOps. Can't speak for what the Navy or Marines do, but nobody in their right mind is doing TaeKwonDo, unless they fight people with zero fighting skills.

If you want to learn grappling, there are lots of guys on the forum who might be able to help, including me.

I think you meant Kalis as in blade not Kali as in Indiana Jones.

Mr. Smith offers a variety of hand to hand, including CQD, training combined with firearms, disarmament, and Krav Maga which has even more application's in real life than FMA.
FMA is actually based on eastern and western techniques any how, except with emphasis on blunt objects, blades and clubs.

Personally, I believe a combination of a variety of techniques is best for self defense.
(Ever hear of Jeet Kine Do ?)   :worship:

Bottom line, any thing you do is better than nothing,  just do it regularly and get that heart rate up !
Zombie rule #1-cardio.

And watch out of Q's desire to grapple !

Been through the Simunitions course a couple times as it is a 3 year recert.  A guy named Gene is a common instructor for Simunition and is originally from Hawaii.  Most recently went through the ATK Force on Force instructor course which was started by the guy who developed the Simunition program and now working for ATK.  Definitely like some of the ATK stuff and worth checking out their course.

I guess part the intention of the post was to find out if there was a place to test my "mettle"

I have taken various combatives and self defense courses and by no means an expert , but as with any skill it is a perishable skill

what I wanted was contolled sparring  with responsible people not like the pecking order that is described by some of my mma friends
where you are just a throwing/ dummy for the first few months

in addition to hand other self defense related skill

Very good K3014,.
Your'e either showing your age, your knowledge or your a Belushi fan.  :geekdanc:
His birthday was just a couple weeks ago (December 1) and he just turned 69

Q.
This was just an example of a personal nature.
The Full Contact World Champ of 6 yrs retiring Undefeated with 23 wins (12 of which were KO's) all done with a bum right leg, no left nut, a 60mph kick  and is still going strong today is pretty effective to me.  :worship:
I can assure you, no one laughs in his 10th dan black belt Grand Master face . He is VERY respected around the world is a GREAT human being .

Ghost, my apologies. :stopjack:
You might still want to check out Master Smiths place.
If it's too far to go regularily, maybe he could recommend aplace closer to you

When I was younger, my friends and I used to hold our own controlled "MMA" matches in my back yard.
We all have martial arts experience as well as boxing and wrestling experience.
It was lots of fun because there were no egos and we were all friends.
It got to be so much fun that a few of the guys that came forgot rule #1 about fight club.
They invited other guys who invited yet other guys.
Eventually it was just fighting.
As soon as it stopped being fun, I bowed out.

I miss the early days of us just having fun and training.
