This is the information for the Hawaii Hunter Education class put on the the Department of Land and Natural Resources. After completing this class, you can get your hunting license and apply for pistol purchase permit. I strongly suggest anyone that uses this course to get their pistol purchase permit to take a NRA sponsored firearms safety course and get some practice time in first. Saftey is the number one thing when operating firearms.

Hello everyone! I was wondering about the Hunter Ed Classes (Oahu), some months have 2 days of class and other months have 3 days of class offered. What is the difference? I know that the 2 days of classes has longer hours than the 3 days of classes, but are they going to cover pretty much every material between the 2 days and 3 days classes?
Also on the website provided above, it states: Students must complete all three (3) nights to get certified. Is that certified to get a hunting license? So if I attend a month with 2 days of class, do I have to attend another 1 day class?
-
The three class thing is new to me, but the way it looks on the site, I'd assume that you just attend whatever classes are scheduled for that grouping and you are good to go. Well, if you pass the test that is.
So two day class, just needs two days. Three day class needs three days. You can always call to confirm, too.

I took mine over 10 years ago. It was. 2 days. Friday evening and all day sat.

I took mine a month ago, and it was still the same...

Thanks for the responses! :shaka:
I'd rather choose and attend the 2 days of class even though it is longer hours. Attend the 2 classes, pass the test then all pau
I just got to get on the list for 2 days of class since it seems to be all booked. Maybe I'll just go there early and stand in line to be considered as a stand-by participant :)

Oh, make sure if you are going stand-by, that you get on the list. There should be a sign-up paper around or in the office.
-
Get there early if you go stand-by. I was there and hour and a half early and was towards the end of the list. From what was said, the class is always packed.

Big Mahalos for the heads up guys. I'll try to get there maybe at least 2 hours early, sign-up and get in line for the stand-bys. Tomorrow's class (Friday) won't be too bad since the class starts at 5:45pm. But on Saturday the class starts at 7:45am, and I will have to be there by 5:45am. I'll probably be still be half awake  ;)
-
No need to show up two hours early on the second day. Stand by is only for the first day. Once you are signed up, your in.
Make sure you take notes when they say "you need to know this" or "it just might be on the test".

Any one know how/where I can get another hunters education class card? I misplaced my card and would like a replacement. Thanks in advance
-
You should be able to contact them and have them print out another certification.
-
just noticed the email at the top. Thanks

Nimitz business center where eagle cafe is. 2nd floor, when you drive up the ramp they are right there on the right. I went there for the same thing 2weeks ago. I think it costs around $5 dollars.

My son is 10 now and we both took the course and passed today! I also took the handgun safety course first but I figure I might as well take the Hunters Ed course too! The min age for kids is 10yrs old for Hunters Ed!

I got lucky and was able to get in as a stand-by for the always-fully-booked classes offered by DLNR this week.
I can't say enough good things about DLNR's Hunter's Education program and highly recommend it. I went in expecting to just get a hunters license and came away with a deep appreciation for animal habitat and wildlife conservation work in Hawaii by hunters and folks in the DLNR.
I encourage those here who are into firearms to check out the Hunters Ed program.
To get a standby seat, go at 2:00 or 2:30 pm of the first day of a booked class and wait till 4:30pm to get on the standby list. If enough people don't show up, you will be able to get in as long as here are seats available in the classroom.

registered for december class. :geekdanc:

If you can go earlier and can't wait until December, just go there early on the first class being held and stand in line for stand-by. If you get into the class on stand-by make sure to cancel your December registration for others to attend. :shaka:

Someone told me this no longer counts for handgun permit to acquire. Is this true?

Was still good on 11/27. I was registering a lower while someone else was applying for a permit for a pistol with their hunter's ed card.
-
That might have been me.
Yeah they still accept it as of last Wednesday.

Any updates to this?

Any updates to this?
at the class this past weekend, it still counts.
they took all the standbys.
looked to be at least 20-30 people standby.
class was crowded.
but I learned some things.
good class overall.

Congrats on getting your hunter's badge, stangzilla.
For gun guys that took a handgun safety class: the Hunter's Education classes is really a different animal (pun intended). It covers a whole slew of topics not covered in the handgun safety class and is highly recommended!

Just applied for a permit with my card, still accepting as of 12/19/13.

I attended the Nimitz class lastnight and there were 25 registered and 25 standby's waiting in line. There were 50 seats so everyone was able to attend. There were a lot of small children taking the class and there were about 20% women in the class. Instructors were good and entertaining.
-
Awesome!

I finished the DLNR Hunters Education course at Nimitz. It was an interesting class learning about conservation, types of animals, methods of hunting, and hunting rules. Class is also good if you go on hikes and like nature. They don't talk much about firearms so I wouldn't recommend taking the class to buy handguns unless you're already very experienced with them. I highly recommend this course to anyone, to include experienced shooters, non-shooters, and children whether or not you're into hunting.
Next class is July 29/30 at Nimitz for standby status. There are classes on each island. Classes are free.
-
I took the class back in December 2015. I agree that it was pretty entertaining. Learned a lot about conservation, how purchase of guns, ammo, etc go toward funding conservation. The class got me really interested in bow hunting!
They sort of gloss over firearm handling. Not really sure how that experience qualifies as meeting the requirements stated in the regs, other than that the badge/certificate is stated as acceptable.
They instructors are really fun and you can tell that they enjoy what they do, both with the hunters ed class as well as hunting, conservation, etc.

Took the Hunters Ed on June 21st-23rd. The instructors were awesome, informative, and made the learning experience enjoyable. They all added their own experiences that brought the educational material into real world context, which made it easier to understand and remember. I was worried about passing the ? of knowledge, but did ok. They said that it would take a few weeks to get your certificate, but we lucked out and I received my the following Friday and purchased my Hunting License on Saturday.
I had to register for the class two month in advance and the class fill up quickly. But the instructors are very accommodating and took all the stand-by, every seat was filled. So if you were not able to register for the class, you should do the standby.
The class is held late in the day, starts at 6pm, sign in at 5:30, we were able to park in any of the stall on the upper deck.

There is a new Hybrid Hunters Education course offered. You take an online course (and pay $19.50) then take a 1 day class (4 hours) instead of the 2 or 3 day class.
