Title: Any stories of price gouging a year ago.
Post by: dogman on January 19, 2014, 10:19:30 AM
I was reading that Colt 6920's were priced at $2200 to $2600 at some mainland shops a year ago. At the recommendation of a friend I paid $400 for a CMMG stripped MK3 lower last February because it was a "good deal". My very first "AR" purchase.

One man's "price gouging" is another man's "free market."  It's nothing but supply and demand.  Supply goes down and/or demand goes up, prices tend to follow demand.

Pmags jumped from about 14 dollars, to $30, and sometimes $60 bucks.

I don't think there is such a thing as 'price gouging' unless it is a necessity item that you literally need to survive; either its worth that much to you that you are willing to buy it, or it isn't. During the craze, I didn't buy anything because I didn't need it, and many people were panic buying because 1) they got caught up in the buying craze that everyone else was taking place in or 2) they thought they could make a huge profit in the future. Many people opted for option 2, and got slammed when they tried to sell their stuff post craze but prices were starting to normalize.

People are still getting slammed tring to sell their overpriced stuff. I laugh out loud every time I see it. Suckers....

Exactly, why is it my fault I know what the current prices are?  I had one guy look at me like I insulted him.  Come on now, IMO just because you have an aftermarket grip on a used rifle that it still is worth $200 over what the current new model is.  After he scoffed at my offer (roughly half of the new one), I told him to keep it, I will order a new one.  A friend of mine told me he is still trying to sell it.  I was thinking of throwing him another offer, less than what I offered the first time.

Yup, it makes me laugh every time some idiot says "I paid $2000 for this ($800) AR so I'm selling it for $1800"

Dumb asses

My aunty and her friend ordered and paid for two AR15's from a local shop who claims to be the dealer for this certain piston driven AR, two weeks before Sandy Hook happened.
Rifles was supposed to be ready for pickup a month after the purchase was made. So a month later, they e-mail the shop and gets no response. When she calls, she's told they haven't received
the rifles yet. At the same time i hear people paying a thousand dollars more for this same piston driven AR, in fact someone was trying to sell one in the classified's here.
They waited six month's before getting their AR's. i haven't been to that shop since.

I disagree with your first statement. There was some price gouging going on a year ago. I saw some grossly inflated prices at certain LGS's. I know its their right in free market, but I am free to spend my money somewhere else too. That sort of thing is bad for business. Maybe they thought the gun control would pass and wanted to make money while they could. In that case, they chose poorly. A LGS owner told me that MAGPUL stopped making mags because they didn't want to get stuck with a wharehouse full of mags they couldn't sell. Which id BS because LE and military buys them. I knew he was trying to stir me up into blowing money. He will get none of my money... EVER.

I agree with you, but I also disagree. The manufacturers didn't jack up their prices a lot. The major outlets didn't either. A few enterprising retailers chose to.

consider this...

They guy that payed an outrageous price for something is probably going to regret spending that kind of money after things calmed down. He will probably blame the guy that sold it to him too.

The guy, like me, that was disgusted buy the price that same retailer was asking for said item will probably not do business with him anymore.

you can say supply and demand all you want but the price gouger is just greedy.

My point is, only a few chose to price gouge. For example, Cheaper than dirt and Ableammo.com price gouged. Midway and Brownells didn't. That shows me who is ethical and who is greedy.

You're wrong, a lot of the "suppliers" to the gun stores jacked up the prices on guns and ammo, which in turn forced the gun stores to raise prices.

Then that same guy should blame his spoon for him being fat and blame beer manufacturers for him being an alcoholic.

The guy, like me, that was disgusted buy the price that same retailer was asking for said item will probably not do business with him anymore.

That is why I don't use spoons anymore.  They kept making me fat.  Now I use forks but they too seem to have that same property.
