Title: Does Hawaii have the stupidest drivers in the nation?
Post by: Haoleb on January 22, 2014, 03:45:55 PM
I think Yes.

I have driven in places that are notorious for bad drivers most notably...Boston & New Jersey..... But I just don't think they quite reach the level of stupidity as those here in Hawaii. In the east coast people are bad drivers because they drive extremely aggressively. If you don't know how to smash the pedal on the right then you will likely be run over. And every car there is full of dents and the remains of small crashes...

Here, people are bad drivers because it seems like they just don't get it. Here are my top 5 stupid things I see almost every time I am on the road.

1. People driving before sunrise or after sunset with no lights on, or with only parking lights on. If it is dark enough that the street lights are on you would think its obvious that your headlights should be on. The most primary purpose is so other people can see YOU.
2. People stopping (even if they are not turning!!!) on a main highway to let other people go who do not have right of way. It pisses me off when people do it for me and really pisses me off when I am behind the moron doing it.
3. People that think somehow because the car in front of you just ran the red light you can do it too. Better yet block the entire intersection after doing such. Way to go asshole!
4. People who do not turn their lights on in fog or rain. In many states it is a law that if your wipers are on your lights need to be as well. even if it is daytime YOU WANT PEOPLE TO SEE YOU.
5. People who pass either illegally or in a very reckless manner to get in front of you when you are already following 20 cars. Uh. It is a 2 lane road. I am going just as fast as the entire line of cars ahead of me and that's exactly how fast you will be going too. Thanks for putting me in danger.
6. Maybe this is a Kona thing. But people routinely have their puppies or random crap for sale on the side of the road or protestors waving their signs... And everyone slows way down to look at the F'ING puppies. For cripes sake!!! Move your ass!!

1 people told me it saves electrity........
2 dumbass polite liberals
3 just plain idiot
4 no law in HI that requires it..
5 i love it, they waste their gas, one uses 20% more gas by driving aggressively
6 its illegal to have road side vendors, call the cops.

You answered the question within the first three words.

It's a combination of people who don't know where they're going (tourist) and just incompetent people. My biggest problem is the pos's who don't acknowledge you let them pull out or walk across the street.

This....one day the bonehead holding up the ambulance is going to end up following it all the way to his home where one of his family members is dying.

That and the the dude that blasts all the way up on the right side and expects everyone to let him merge at the front of the line like at the lunalilo St. onramp.

Ironically, 90% of these terrible drivers are, you guessed it.....Asian women.

Let me guess, Amazonian, Euro broads are much better drivers, right?

Rant on.  Those $&#@ tards that speed up when you put your blinker on to close the gap so you can't get in the lane your trying to get to.   Best story to date was awhile back in Waikiki at a 4 way stop, they guy who had the right of way had pedestrians in front of him, so I went.   This dude in a  nice washed import floored it as soon as the last pedestrian passed to act like he  was going to t-bone me and blasted his horn.  Hope he enjoyed the full Starbucks frappie all over his hood and windshield >:D

Yep, I drive in this mess every day. You can king of cut the tourists some slack, but the people that live here are just horrendous.
How about these;

1.  The guy that slows down and stops at the bottom of the on ramp to the freeway, because he can't figure out that whole "merging" thing.

2.  The person that floors it to get in front of you while you're in the fast lane, and then slows down to 40 mph for no apparent reason.

3.  The asshats that rush up and squeeze into the 3/4 car length space in front of you, when there's 27 car lengths of open space behind you.

4.  Idiots that can't seem to figure out that the little stick on the steering column is for TURN SIGNALS, and try to get you to let them in by "dodging" at you. [ I don't let them in]

5.  People that pull up to a red light at an intersection in the left lane, with no left turn lane, and wait until the light changes to turn on their left turn indicator.

 :wtf: >:(

In a related matter, I am annoyed by people who install maximum power blue headlight bulbs that spray blinding blue light across every lane of the roadway, including oncoming traffic.
They do not seem to be able to focus all those lumens directly in from of them where it belongs. I suspect some of those light installations might be the illegal "off road" HID lights too.
I'll bet some of you fellas reading this are guilty of doing this, huh?

1) No turn signal usage...
2) No Ambulance awareness...
3) Confusion at a four way traffic light malfunction...
4) Slow down on the highway in the middle of traffic because they're lost....

I agree, those HID headlights are lame...no race track equals all looks now... ;D

A lot of pedestrians just walk out into a crosswalk without even looking if there's a car coming now...

Pretty much the "I have the right of way" attitude.... false sense of security liberal thinkers...

Haven't really been anywhere to compare Hawaii drivers to anywhere else, but I agree....

My company holds classes on "Defensive Driving" every so often for us...
Basically in a nut shell, taught us how to avoid bad pedestrians and bad drivers... :-\

These are all good ones. Nothing worse then turning into a merging lane on the highway doing 20+ mph and watching for bikers, mopeders etc.. only to see some moron completely stopped right in front of you in the merge lane, immediately after the turn. Not even at the end.

Worse yet people who take the wrong exit on the freeway and halfway down the exit stop, and reverse back onto the freeway!  WTF!! ::) I don't see this here but on the mainland...

And yes also the lifted trucks with their headlights right in your face. I guess it never occurred to them that when you lift your truck 12 inches you have to adjust your headlight aim. Sometimes I want to flip my long range spotlights on at them and show them what its like.

You left out the geezers here in Kona that sit in the left turn lane forever.  They refuse to go when there are perfectly safe gaps in oncoming traffic.  So you sit, and sit, and sit, until the geezer sees no cars out to the horizon, and finally gets up the nerve to take the turn.

Left turn onto Kuakini from Hwy 11 is a prime example.  Couple times I said to hell with it and slid around behind them and went.  Get some nice horn blaring somethimes.

We are all getting older, I prefer not to do it waiting for fools.  Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Another is the dorks trying to be cool and backing into parking spots, blocking the lane while they maneuver forever ticks me off.. Just pull into the damn slot and be done with it, you are not impressing anyone.  Never seen that stunt before except in Hawaii.

Hawaii drivers don't recognize the farthest left lane on the highway is a passing lane. Packed tour buses, tractor trailers and other large slow moving vehicles seem to think that this lane is for them. Not sure if it is safe or just following the law, but when an ambulance with lights and siren on; do drivers just stop on the highway or just move out of the way in a safe speed? Hawaii drivers are like zombies flashing lights fascinate them and they are caught in a daze resulting in traffic backing up for miles.

On a similar note, traffic laws are a great example of the limitations of the law. How many people drive in the HOV lane with only ONE person during effective hours? How many of you speed? How many of you flick cig butts out the window? Smoke a joint while in traffic? (I smell a lot of it during the drive home). Laws only work when people decide to follow them. The root problem is the character of our people. Faith in religion or other beliefs is the foundation of our character but yet we knowingly trade vices for the erosion of our beliefs.
A common excuse based on observation and casual conversation is that laws are only broken when a person is caught.

Last Thursday I was on the corner of Date Street and Kapahulu waiting for the crossing signal. I was trying to cross Kapahulu on the makai side of Date. First thing I did was make eye contact with the driver wanting to make a right hand turn from Date onto Kapahulu. The walk signal came up and I stepped out into the crosswalk and the damn driver started making his right hand turn! He looked at me like why was I in the street in front of his car? An old man across from me waiting to cross Date Street saw the whole thing and yelled at the driver after I jumped back up onto the sidewalk. I made eye contact with the driver and started yelling at him. Eventually the driver waived me on like he was doing me a favor. IDIOT!!! He literally came with in 2 feet of me before I jumped back!

BTW, I was wearing a safety yellow shirt and my glow in the dark safety yellow and orange (approved by the DOT) vest. You really do need to not only drive defensively but cross the street defensively as well.

I can certainly agree with Hawaii drivers and flashing lights, in fact I'll take it a step further and say that pretty much anything shiny on the road is enough to drive them to distraction.

 Ooooh! Look, shiiiny!

As far as peoples lax attitudes toward the law, I think it has more to do with the fact that laws have become less about principles and more about restriction of liberty. Think about it, there are laws that attempt to govern nearly every aspect of behavior, inserting the government into the most miniscule private portions of our lives. It's no longer up to you, it's AGAINST THE LAW.
This kind of crap is virtually impossible to enforce, and is therefore ludicrous. When people realize that a law is BS, of course they ignore it, as they should. This contributes to the downward spiral, as people tend to ignore more important, necessary laws, especially when there is little consequence, even when they're caught.

You're right. Morality and character are learned behaviors, and sadly lacking these days, but in the absence of liberty, people will rebel in whatever small way they can.

All you guys complaining about drivers here tells me one thing for certain...
you have NEVER spent any time in Orlando, Florida.

Let's talk about a spot where more than 70% of the traffic on the street is from tourists, all of whom drive the same way they drive in their home towns.  Honolulu, Hawaii?  This is nothing.  Chill out, turn up your stereo, and arrive the fuck alive.

I was crossing a crosswalk once time on a SMALL SIDE STREET and there was a large SUV or truck stopped for me. So I walked right up to the middle of the crosswalk but DUE TO A PERSONAL HABIT OF SAFETY PRECAUTION I slowed down and looked and LO AND BEHOLD at that moment some jerk off car whizzed by at even above the posted speed limit. If I was not so DAMNED CAREFUL totally I would not be writing this now. Due to the SUV my line of sight was blocked for a few seconds, enough for that car to speed by even when another driver was obviously stopped at a crosswalk. It would have been too late if I had stopped even just one or two feet AFTER i crossed the "protection zone" that the SUV had created.

Relative to who the pedestrian is....The teenager crossing in a crosswalk tries to walk as slow as possible so you miss the chance to turn.  Then you see some elderly lady who has trouble walking trying to jog to be considerate and get out of your way.  the whole while I'd be hoping they would slow down so they dont trip and fall on their face.

Completly agree, Hawaii has "stupid" drivers and other places have aggressive drivers. I think part of it has to do with lack of ability to drive long distances on real freeways and the much slower speeds driven here (at least on Oahu). And sadly the people here do perpetuate the stereotype of Asian and female drivers. Less than 6 months till I PCS out of here and get back to what is "normal" driving to me (hopefully).

Yesterday there was an accident near my home.
I checked out the situation and noticed a fatality.
Unfortunate. :(
I knew the road would now be closed for hours and traffic was backing up, so I ask the nearest  PO if he wants me to assist with traffic by turning them around at PCC.
He says "Yes please. the road will be closed for 3-4 hrs."

So I work my way back to PCC from the accident informing drivers.
Some turn around, others don't even roll down there window ( I see them an hour later  ;D).

After getting to the PCC turn around I continue spreading the message and still some just pass me, locals and tourist's alike.
What, do I look like a frick'n carjacker on  a bicycle ?  :wtf:

1/2 hr later the cop pulls up and thnks me ( nice cop) and proceeds to McDonalds to turn them around there.
Now I'm just finishing up with the last of cars that got past McDonalds before the cop when cars start coming out from the back side of PCC !
Yup, they ignored the cop, went around behind PCC, thru BYU and up Quarry Rd to get where I was turning around cars !

Best part was waving  to them as they returned past me a half hour later after waiting behind all of the other cars that passed me to turn around.

Agree, but would add fire engine too.  On a side note, some in the community want to eliminate sirens, horns and lights used by authorized emergency vehicles during emergency response.  Don't quite understand what's so difficult about "pull to the nearest curb" when you hear a siren or see approaching emergency vehicles, yet some want to eliminate the use of warning devices (required by C&C of Honolulu Traffic Code), by emergency vehicles.  Seems like some people have enough trouble yielding to emergency vehicles responding to emergencies with lights and siren, why eliminate those tools that help to make their presence known?
The other one that gets me is the number of trucks and buses that use the left lane.  Something I notice while driving on the mainland is that unless CMVs are passing, they all pretty much stay to the right lane.  Don't CDL rules/recommendations apply in Hi. also?

Not really a driving situation, but I'm sure this lady probably sucks at driving too.
So I'm walking past Whole Foods Kahala and there is an unattended car parked by the curb.  All the windows down, keys in the ignition and running with the stereo playing some new age hippie music.  As I walk by I notice, get this, two toddlers in car seats in the back seat.  I stop in amazement and start looking around for the driver and nothing.  I walk up to the car thinking the driver would see me and worry I was going to hop in and drive off with the kids, still nothing.  So I wait here for several minutes and was about to call the cops when a lady finally shows up with her groceries.  I tell her that she's not to bright leaving her kids in the car, open and with the keys in it.  She gives me the stink eye and says "well maybe I should borrow your brain" Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.
I was left shaking my head with my mind blown.

A lot of drivers take driving for granted.  The way i see it is its not a game.  Its a tool and like all tools it should be used properly, when its used properly it is used safely.  It requires all your attention and senses to use tools, you dont take your eye off the nail when you hammer it lol
These nubs are the reason why car insurance costs so much.

Making eye contact with people on the road including pedestrians and bikers (because the road isn't just for cars!), signaling your intention, and using hand gestures  :shaka: make things move so much smoother.  Although non-signalers tick me off, i never trust looking at the vehicle for an indication of direction, the driver's face is the strongest indicator of direction, after all they are controlling the vehicle.  save that $100 + the trouble and always use the turn signals.

IMO you should've called the cops. This is the woman we're going to hear about on the news, because her kids roasted to death after she "forgot" them in the car while she went to yoga class. People like this are just stupid beyond belief.

As a motorcycle driver, I have found that you need to be an extremely defensive driver in a car or a bike on these roads. I would agree that Hawaii has the worst drivers on the road.

all of the above is valid.

a lot of the poor driving here is worsened by our need for technology everywhere. i'm also guilty of driving while talking on the phone but i've been driving for 40 years w/no accidents. a lot of people can't walk and chew gum at the same time.
what has changed over the years is the eye contact and acknowledgement from drivers as well as pedestrians. everybody does their own thing without a care of who's around them when there used to be a common courtesy on all sides. everyday i see pedestrians just walk out into a crosswalk without looking because they have the right of way..........the right of way to be dead if they didn't acknowledge the driver before walking across the road. couple that with the driver on the phone or texting and you have a disaster.

on top of all that,  the guy next to you has his stereo booming with his windows rolled down and you're stuck in traffic. dammit, i'm getting road rage and i'm not even in my car yet.....

I was left shaking my head with my mind blown.
....
It would have been fun to jump in and drive the car about 50 yards and park it. Then video the panicked mom.

Bicyclists pies me off. They lean on my truck, cut me off, come super close in the bike lane. I'll share the road when they obey the laws. Because of them I have to refill my windshield wiper fluid too often.

Has anyone noticed that the converting of the Lunalilo freeway from 3 lanes to 4 has made traffic on the freeway worse than it was before? Now people are afraid to drive at a reasonable speed because the lanes are too narrow. But I think if you can't drive just 50MPH, stay off the freeway!! And another thing, tailgating and rubbernecking should be capital crimes punishable by death!!

The narrow lanes are more dangerous on the freeway.  Almost got banged this evening when a lady in a late model Honda accord was trying to reach for stuff in the back seat she swerved into my lane 3 times!

Call me crazy, but I don't think that's an example of how the road is dangerous.  The driver?  Yes!!

Try and go through that stretch with the narrowed lanes next to a commercial vehicle such as a bus and or semi they have no room in the lane they take up the whole lane with no wiggle room. I feel for them having to drive through that stretch of the H-1.

Yes it seems as though our DOT engineers are just as bad as our drivers.   Why in the world do we have onramps immediately before offramps? Seems logical that if it were the other way around there would be alot less congestion in those areas where cars are trying to merge on and off in the same area.   ??? ???

Logic? Common sense?? No, no, no, you don't understand. That's against union rules as it requires the use of brain cells which have been either been outlawed or become highly regulated in the state of Hawaii.

Exactly....example: the 50 yard patches of asphalt along the Pali Hwy.  I'm guessing so that they can screw traffic twice as much as if it was done once!?

22.

That's how many dumbass things committed by drivers in the span of a week.

Low and behold, 20 of the incidents involved women, 19 of those Asian women.

but were they hot asian women?

I've seen Panos racing his car at the stadium SCCA. He's a very good driver.

And the east bound onramp at piikoi.
Since they rebuilt it, it's much more dangerous.
Now you have to merge accross 2 lanes quickly while exiting cars merge the other way
Just yestrrday this driver that just so happened to be female
Would not let me merge
That was very uncool.

Reading about what ya'll experience in Honolulu brings back not so fond memories of my few years driving there.  Co-workers and friends used to chide me about not knowing where things were and finding out it was because I avoided Honolulu traffic like the plague.

Did not grow up in a city, and suddenly having to drive in a super congested one with very strange street design was jarring.  After the logic of SoCal freeway access ramps, the insanity of trying ti figure out how to get onto H-1 bordered on fodder for a spoof film.

And how could I forget the traffic coning of Kapiolani into single lane one wayin the afternoon.  No can turn left, got caught on the wrong side of the pylons once or twice until I figgered it out.  I was being put up in a condo off Kuhio when I first arrived, disoriented, and I have to deal with that along with the traffic trying to get home after a day at the new job.

Makes me love the Big Island so much more, remembering that cesspool of idiot drivers and weird streets.

agreed.... the narrow lanes makes it veeerrrry difficult to see ahead of the car in front of you... which is really critical. i like to see as far ahead of as as possible, i aint gonna depend on the jackass driving directly in front of me.. one things for sure the insurance companies gon benefit from all the accidents scrapes scratches dings and dents that will occur

Lets hear em.

Here are my top 5   6 stupid things ?

Been quite a while since I drove in Florida.  What they have that we do not is a very large number of geriatric drivers.  Older folks here seems to know when to hang it up.

Florida used to be notorious for granting licenses to geezers that had already killed others due to their age.  Best one was some old woman that mowed down a bunch of pedestrians at a bus stop of something.  They renewed her license anyway, IIRC.

Hawaii may not have the stupidest drivers, but they rank pretty high up there. They may be unique with the ainokea attitude, and it will go on for generations to come. Kids will learn from their stupid families and stupid friends, their kids will learn from them, and so on. More and more there are those that leave the scene of an accident, especially after they've killed someone. This is a higher level of stupid. We'll all be long gone one day, and stupid people will still be on the roads.

May have posted this before, but have sometimes turned left behind some fool that refused to make the turn even with enormous gaps in oncoming traffic.  I know, I know, slow down, but sometimes, I gotta pee.

And all the time, my mind just is not that sluggish.  Maybe take up dope smoke?

Now that I drive a big SUV and not a fast little WRX, not so much of a temptation to zap behind.  Still, some way to goose the idiot to say, take the bus if driving is so scary?

Revival time!

Hawaii made the list of top 10 states with the worst drivers...  ranked #1 for speeders!!

Quote
Each state is ranked according to the follow categories:

Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
Failure to Obey (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that involved Traffic Signals, Not Wearing Seat Belts, and Driving with an Invalid Driver License)
Drunk Driving (Percentage of Fatal Crashes that Involved Alcohol)
Speeding (Percentage of Driving Fatalities that were Speed-Related)
Careless Driving (Pedestrian & Bicyclist Fatalities per 100,000 Population)

We translated all of this information into one Total Score, and the worst states received the lowest scores.

Ask drivers if they know what a diamond on the lane means? I'd bet few would know what that means..
To a tour bus driver: so I can drive in it
To a heavy truck: so heavy trucks can use it
To a motorcycle: reserved for me
To a senior citizen: AARP created it for us (seniors)
To a new teenage driver: they told me that it is a "fast lane" so like if I wanted fo go from Hawaii Kai to Waianae I should stay in this lane foevah.
To a BMW driver: part of my diamond club benefits is having a lane dedicated to BMWs
To a Lexus driver: ditto

When you have speed limits so insanely low that even Priaps and Volts can easily exceed them, speeding tickets are flowing freely.

To the control freaks, this means you have a speeding problem, rather than mpe correctly a realistic speed limit problem.

Pretty sure that if we go any slower we might as well stay home.
Yet some of these idiots will STILL manage to get into an accident or flip their car, in a cul-de-sac no less.
No shit, I saw this, cop banging on my door at 2 am because some idiot had flipped their car, going straight, on a cul-de-sac 100 feet long.
I agree with the conclusions if not the reasoning.
