so what exactly do we need to do to qualify?
Be gentle with me.

if you need to ask...

 >:D

the main qualification is that the instructors are familiar with you and your weapons safety
everything else is secondary to that
the instructors have come up with a simple drill that is an extension of what was practiced in earlier 102 sessions
think of the 2-4 time slot as a 103 class (101 is the range safety/range commands/holstering, etc brief for newbies)
we are trying to relieve demand on the morning class so that we can open up more spots for more members in the 102 group

Under 12 hours from the first signup to sold out.  Basically, if you aren't a compulsive forum checker, or if you work a regular day job without internet access, there was no chance.  I made the list because I am a compulsive forum checker who has internet access at work, but I can totally appreciate the injustice of that.  Does anyone else wonder if there's a more equitable method?

There is another avenue.  The HDF facebook page will announce the event usually the next day after the announcement here.  You can try to sign up there as well but nothing is guaranteed.

Yeah, I can think of two alternatives, neither of which I really like (since, you know, I have time and access to stalk the forum and thus am part of the 1%).  One is a lottery system.  The other is some form of tiered membership.

Again, not endorsing a change, just feeling sorry for those less-fortunate souls that actually work for a living, or don't use the internet in lieu of having a life.  ;)

Don't feel too bad. I think we all realize that there are limitations. I've been trying to get into Hunter's Ed for months and always miss out. For me it is what it is and I accept that. Hopefully one day the HDF would have the resources to accommodate more folks.

On a positive note it's great to see so many responsible firearm owners wanting to learn how to use their firearms safely and effectively.

Hopefully one day the HDF would have the resources to accommodate more folks.

If more people are willing to help watch people, then I'm sure someone can talk to dirty and them to see about increasing the limit.   Just gotta have enough eyes to cover the guns sufficiently and make sure everyone goes home with everything they came with (minus ammunition).

What kind of background training is required and what is the time commitment?

I would also be interested in the requirements for HDF range safety please PM me the info.

Actually gents we have enough safety officials.  The real problem is 1) space on the line for shooters to shoot safely.  2) the time it takes for more people to shoot. For those who have been to the range days understand the line changes and even the props are limited. Thats why the need for the third late afternoon sessions and the need for more props. And of course storage space for all these extra equipment. But we are currently looking into solutions for storage.  And action bay 2 which is larger are some answers to the dilemmas.

Roger thanks DL. I was just figuring if my schedule permits and I can make it one day to help as needed possibly as a safety and observe the range day first before I commit to locking in a training spot for myself. Kinda paying if forward by doing some club service before self service.

+1; like dustoff, I believe in helping out and supporting worthwhile causes.  Let me know if I can assist in other ways, as well

everyone is welcome to observe, we may ask for help if necessary, but we usually have enough
we are not shy about asking, though
free shoot is from 12-1:45 or so, and everyone is invited for that too

So are you guys going to start allowing other people to volunteer to teach during range days or no?

There are lots of guys with something to share, so i think it would diversify the training and allow people exposure to different perspectives and techniques.
people can volunteer to teach at anytime during range days I do it all the time.  We all learn from each other. So i suggest to whom ever would like to teach sign up attend a few sessions come on out participate and volunteer your different perspectives and techniques we all watch and learn.

Q
Mahalo for your input
I think people (everyone, not just you) need to remember that this is a work in progress and we have been at it, what, 6 months?
And that doesn't include the lost time due to the range shutdown
We are now trying to find out how we can keep things interesting and worthwhile, but with the primary goal always being safety
I feel that the range days will be evolving over time, and I am positive that 3, 6, 12 months from now we will have even more change, and hopefully it will be for the better
We value everyone's input, and appreciate the thoughts, but before we think about "diversify the training", we need to ensure that we have a base level of competency and a comfort level with people's range safety awareness

Know it won't be cheap but I'd throw in for an HDF storage locker in Hawaii Kai.  It would be more secure than out in the open at the range.

Mentioned this before but one option is like Front Sight's practice of having 1:1 "observer" to shooter.  Drill, then switch and the shooter becomes the observer and vice versa.  This also means there is a 1:1 SO ratio at all times.  The rising tide raises all boats and allows for more of them even, their classes are huge but run very efficiently :)  Just a thought as HDF grows in popularity.

everyone is welcome to observe, we may ask for help if necessary, but we usually have enough
we are not shy about asking, though
free shoot is from 12-1:45 or so, and everyone is invited for that too

Can you give more information about the "free shoot", like does everyone mean everyone? skill level? and what do you shoot at? Of course I do understand that safety always comes first.

everyone means everyone
hdf members $10, non-members $20
you can sign up for HDF on the spot $25 annually
shoot at targets, bowling pins
bottles
whatever
distance is usually 12-15 yards
some people run drills
some people just do mag dumps
you can holster and draw (no iwb or cross-draw)
practice transitions
just be safe and legal
we have some VTAC boards to try out too

come out, dogman, the gang would get a kick out of the AR pistol

actually it is been done like this currently running 3 person teams so 1 shooter 2 observers (12 people shooting at a time) because space is limited but when the drills become dynamic then only 2 shooters can go at a time. As for the 1/1 SO not all of the participants are experienced enough to watch themselves wouldn't feel comfortable with them watching some one with evenless experience where experience could have anticipated a foul move coming. Especially  when im responsible to answer the WTF happened questions. We are continuing to improve and grow this to be effective as possible.

Understood, not saying you and the rest of the RSOs aren't watching but being augmented.  in general it is basic safety concepts and not hard to watch for muzzle downrange or finger on the trigger.  This is 101 talking about and everyone should have it in them from the get go.  Build confidence, responsibility and active safety participation right at the start.  Watching over "Dynamic" exercise is another matter and will vary of course, may not even want anyone else up there depending on the course.

Just an FYI, from what I have seen on different weather forecast models for saturday, it might be a wet one.  I don't have a canopy, so if someone does have a canopy and would be so kind to let me use a small corner to put my bags I would be most grateful.   :shaka:

some say 50% chance of rain
others say 50% chance of storms
shoot goes on rain or shine

you shoot at various targets about 15yards away.

bring empty 2 liter or gallon plastic bottles! more fun than shooting paper imo.

or you can bring the skinny 1"x2" wood to stick into the rusty frame holders to set up paper targets. people just use clamps or staples or tape to hold it all together. they dont bolt them together like most guys on the rifle side. its just a flimsy temporary and easy to set up thing because the freeshoot is only an hour or so.

I was thinking for these events, we should get a roster of active members and send out mass texts to announce any events. I can see it getting intense in terms of message traffic but might be good for getting a hold of people faster.

are you talking about the range day itself or the flash flood warning?

we have the schedule set every 6 months, and announce details 1-2 weeks in advance
the class fills fast anyways, and the free shoot is usually one or two dozen additional people
the action bay is pretty crowded
notification is usually not a problem, the guys are mostly all online daily if not hourly

flash flood watch until 6 am sunday...

special weather statement for south shore of oahu
... RISK OF STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
A POWERFUL UPPER LEVEL LOW WILL DIG SOUTH TOWARD THE ISLANDS LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT. AHEAD OF THIS LOW... THE ATMOSPHERE OVER THE ISLANDS WILL CONTINUE TO DESTABILIZE RAPIDLY.
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP EARLY THIS AFTERNOON OVER THE ISLANDS. IN ADDITION TO THE THREAT FOR FLASH FLOODING... THE STRONGEST STORMS THIS AFTERNOON COULD PRODUCE STRONG GUSTY WINDS... FREQUENT LIGHTNING... INTENSE DOWNPOURS... AND FUNNEL CLOUDS.
TONIGHT AND SATURDAY... SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE. AS THE UPPER LOW APPROACHES THE ISLANDS... A FEW OF THESE STORMS COULD BECOME SEVERE. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS AND HAIL THE SIZE OF QUARTERS OR LARGER... IN ADDITION TO FREQUENT LIGHTNING AND INTENSE RAINFALL.
BE READY FOR RAPID CHANGES IN THE WEATHER TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY. WHILE NOT EVERYONE WILL SEE INTENSE WEATHER... YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED TO MOVE INDOORS QUICKLY IF THE WEATHER APPEARS THREATENING OR THUNDER IS HEARD. THOSE WITH OUTDOOR PLANS SHOULD HAVE AN IMMEDIATE WAY TO GET WATCHES OR WARNINGS THAT MAY BE ISSUED TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY.
