I have recently began raising 2 hens for eggs. Does anyone raise rabbits and/or quail for foo/meat/protein source? Does anyone have established populations? I'm interested to know feeding and spacial requirements per head of rabbit and quail. I am familiar with laws regarding keeping hens within city limits (2 heads per household), but what are the laws regarding keeping rabbit and quail? ???

Wifey raised and bred Netherland dwarfs for years (though she would not let me eat them).
Keep the food (pellets) available at all times.
Rabbits make great "composters" for kitchen scrap which in return, produces one of THE BEST FERTILIZERS !
PLENTY of water.
Water bottles are fine but need to be filled regularily, sometimes daily depending on bottle size.
We got the nipples that fit onto 2 litre bottles so we could replace/recycle often..
Clean nipples or algae builds up.
Our pens were 3' x 3' x 5' ( designed to best utilize 1/4 mesh) about 2 ft off the ground and each held several rabbits.
The 1/4 mesh helps keep rats out of the food as Rabbits and rats get along (same genus).
Roof was pitched plywood with an elastameric coating.
Doors were vertical sliding plexi.
A wooden box with nesting material (hay, newspaper, rags) was provided for EACH female.

was interesting to see some baby quails for sale at windward mall pet store $10/each... and cochin chicks $7/each but only had 2 and both were sold.
got me thinking about building a quail coop from scrap woods. If i were to start with 5 quail, what ratio of males to females should i have?

1:5 or 1:10, male to female.
If you are raising for meat, you wanna eat the males before you eat the females, unless the females aren't producing.
roger that
is inbreeding a problem? is it ok to maintain a 5-10 population without inputting outside quail?

from what I've learned with other animals, you might want to breed with fresh birds every now and then.
i assume you like to breed with eastern european fresh birds?

I asked my kids if we should start raising rabbits for food as I've heard they taste great.
They said an emphatic NO !
Maybe that wasn't an appropriate question on Easter. :-\
