Since the object of the SSF is really to introduce new people to the sport, I can understand the use of the term. To someone that is not familiar with firearms, saying there will be a semi-auto M60 means nothing. They don't know what it is, or why they might find it exciting.
If, however, the term "machine gun" is used, they get it and will hopefully want to come out and shoot it.
Remember, a condescending attitude can turn someone off to the idea of becoming involved with firearms and we need all the support we can get.

I believe we used quotation marks around "machine gun" in the flyer. What would you suggest we use to convey to a novice that we have a semi-automatic version of a belt-fed machine gun?

How about, "Belt fed machine gun with a .30-caliber clip, able to disperse 30 bullets within half a second. Thirty magazine clip in half a second" ?
Non-gun people seem to understand that kind of technical nomenclature!!

"ghost guns" are bad, bad, bad. :(

"we have a semi-automatic version"... sounds good 8)

Stuff on sale at the actual fair or just a coupon that you need to take to the store? Sorry, this will be my first time going. Basically what I want to know is should I bring my long gun permit or not.

Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for putting on a good fair :shaka:
Was a little bummed there were no lever actions for my wife to try but I understand that most people want to shoot the semi-autos and it makes the line move quicker. Did get to shoot some skeet for the first time, which was a lot of fun. May need to consider a shotgun down the road...

Post your pics too! Gonna miss out this year, but interested to see what's there!

The shooting fair was a lot of fun. Got to try the scar17, Tavor 556, PTR-91, Fn FAL and Saiga 12.
A big big thank you to the organizers of the Father's Day weekend event!

My wife shot a 20 gauge today..... now she wants one.
Good safe day at the range, good job guys.

She didn't want a 12ga? She shot it pretty good. That clay pigeon disintegrated.
-
Bum shoulder, she needs something suitable to her needs.

I regret not being able to volunteer for the HDF this year. I wanted to make it happen but I had already promised the HRA my Saturday before I found out HDF was going to be there. I came by to see what you guys were shooting. It looked pretty impressive. I really liked the tennis balls and bowling pins. I would suggest you also get some hanging metal targets for the pistols and pistol caliber carbines. They were very popular on the HRA side as the shooter got audible confirmation of their hit.
Here are some observations from the last three years I volunteered for the HRA. This year due to ammo limitations we were not able to get/afford .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum ammo. People came this year and asked for these calibers. But the biggest disappointment was not having the Desert Eagles in both .44 and .50AE. These two pistols were by far the most popular guns the previous two years and brought a lot of script for the HRA. Many were disappointed. Partly due to the ammo shortage but I found out later the HRA was afraid of someone getting hurt by these guns. Apparently a couple of people had the gun go over their head due to the recoil. Also, another fav that was quite popular were the lever action rifles in .357/.38 and .44 magnum. Again, people asked for them but we did not have them this year. Shame. Besides the Glock 17 and 19, HK .45 being the most shot pistols the next most popular gun was the gold toned Rhino in .357/.38. We did have some .38 for the public to shoot. I hate to be the owner of that gun. It will probably take a week to soak off the carbon. It would have been better if we could have offered .357 to shoot in it over .38.
One last thing I noted. Over the years we had certain guns stop operating correctly. Mostly the .22 semi auto pistols just got so dirty they stopped working. Also, mostly the high tech pistol caliber carbines went down for numerous reasons. But on Saturday none of the AR's went down. But both AK's went down.
I hope the HDF collected a lot of script and raised a lot of money. I know the HRA probably did well. Though maybe not as much as last year. I hope everyone who attended had fun. I hope everyone who volunteered like that they accomplished something big. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to the HDF cause next year.

I had a great time shooting some guns I'd never shot before (including doing skeet which apparently I'm actually pretty good at.. I see a shotgun purchase in my future).
Main suggestion for next year would be to more prominently (i.e. further out from the actual lanes) post what guns are available (not just type/caliber, which was well-done and readily apparent). Particularly for the handguns where for some lanes got a little crowded due to being popular, I didn't really want to bother going up to peruse the options and also get in the way. I probably would have tried a few more handguns I haven't shot before if I had a better idea of the options. The folks over on the far left, ewa side did this nicely with an illustrated binder. Again not trying to harp on this as it was done pretty well, I just think better advertising would make it even better.
No big deal, just my $0.05 (inflation!)
Thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible with a particular shout out to the skeet folks who took me from zero to hero (including a double clay kill with 1 shell).

I was working the bullpups on Saturday and part of Sunday. I should've been like Hnl.flyboy and put my 2A username on my name tag.
Hope you enjoyed it. Saturday was pretty dead and reports were because of bad traffic with lots of reports of people not making it to the range on Saturday. Hope anyone who got stuck in traffic on Saturday made it out on Sunday!

How was sunday?

How was sunday?
It was a lot busier than Saturday, but still not as busy as the past two years. In 2012 and 2013, we had lots of people trying to scramble to use up scrip as 4 pm approached. This year, there were only a handful of people who needed to burn up scrip.
There was a good rush of people from opening until around 1 pm or so. I heard that there was a pretty long line at the main tent where the safety brief was. Every now and then I looked over to the parking areas and it looked crazy.

Yep. I've only shot a handful of times and I really want a Browning. . . well at least I have a dream. :D

This years shooting sports fair was a ton of fun. I'm really glad I got to volunteer on the HDF side.

I was at the HRA tent on Sunday at the .22 cal rifles and handguns. There were non stop shooters from beginning to end. To be able to help people young and older satisfy their curiosity about firearms and shoot for the first time is highly rewarding. There was an older woman who fired a handgun for the first time that day, she came back multiple times and always picked the revolver. I had to pull the hammer back for her on every shot and she had a very serious look on her face as pulled the trigger, but when a target was hit, not always by her (but she didn't have to know that), her face would light-up and she would say did I do that...did I do that...To see people walking away smiling after their experience is well worth giving up my own shooting for the day. I was totally exhausted by the end of the weekend but I look forward to volunteering again next year! :)

I think SAT was slow because a lot of people gave up trying to get through the freeway mess. I got some calls from people who asked how it was at the range and they all told me they were stuck in major traffic.

I went Sunday with my daughter and her boy friend.
Traffic from Central Oahu was very light. We stopped at IHOP in Pearl City on the way for my Father's Day treat. After waiting 45 minutes for seating (IHOP ... Father's Day ... ), it was probably about 11:00 when we got to KHSC.
There was a line at the shooting fair to check in and get a safety brief. After getting a bunch of scrip, we went to the skeet area. That was a pretty long wait, but not too bad.
Then we shot a variety of long guns and pistols. I got to try a Tavor 5.56, a KSG 12 ga, and an FAL .308.
Once all the scrip ran out, it was after 2PM. We ran into some friends there and all had a good time.
Traffic back was no problem. All in all, we had a good day and still had some daylight left after coming home.
Thanks to all who donated time and materials, both at last week's clean up, and at this week's event.
I have some video of my group shooting skeet. If I get a chance to clean it up soon, I'll post it.
Mahalo!! :shaka:
