Info is outdated according to snopes. Take the snopes info with some reservations.

I've learned over time to always give directly to the homeless and people in need.......

I never give donations to a middle man...doesn't make sense.....

Its easy to not give your undivided attention to someone versus taking time out of your daily schedule to hand over

food directly to someone in need.....

I used to give money to my Church and direct the Dollar Deacon (Treasurer) to give it to the needy of my choice, whom or which I had checked out,  without getting my name involved.

And I knew exactly what my Pastor made.  Sometimes I'd gift him, but it was hard to hide that fact.

In those inescapable United Way (UW) campaigns at work, I used to give a buck, just to avoid having my department show less than 100% participation.  Then I found out that one could donate specifically to the NRA through United Way by using the earmarking codes you could request from the UW volunteer*,

Knowing how much was skimmed by United Way "administrative costs," I still only gave a buck, but I felt like I was making a statement.

* This is a whole brochure containing all the organizations which receive contributions from UW along with the donation codes.  The UW volunteers will give one to you on request.

Charities need to disclose the percentage of your donation that will go towards administrative purposes (i.e. salaries amongst other things).  Generally this is a good rough estimator of how much value your contributions are getting.  However, non-profit does not mean no profit.  Case in point, the NFL is a non-profit.  So yeah, you gotta be a little careful.

I usually do a quick run through for a charity on this site:
