Has anyone in this forum built a AK47 from a parts kit and reciever. If so could you please share your personal experience. Thanks so much
-
Considered it, but found the cost in tools to be prohibitive. I suppose if you're planning to build several, it might be worth it.

At some point of the build process, you're going to need welding equipment if you're using a flat piece of metal for the receiver, a furnace to treat the receiver metal and a 1 ton press to push the barrel in. I considered it before but thought it was too much work.
Yeah, and as tundah said, the tools you need costs almost as much as an AK.

done several
yeap , a press is a must
they are cheap from harbour freight

Thanks for the information this helped out alot.

Lots of fun and commitment. I got a parts kit and flats if you want to try.
-
I've wanted to do this but buying the jigs/etc is a bit $$ considering I really have no use for more than 1-2 AKs.
If there was enough interest maybe we could do a build party or something?

days of cheap AK kits are gone.
$69 Romanians kits and $99 yugo kits.
they were cost effective to build before.

Thanks for the response I may take you up on that offer in the future. It would be cool if there was a 80% lower or ak47 build class hosted around here.

As Suka posted the cheap kits are gone. This will increase the cost to build an ak. It may take a while to find a parts kit in good condition and with the original barrel. Fitting a new US made barrel or a take off barrel from another kit can be difficult. AK builder has kits with a properly fitted barrel. It will be easier to make your first build on a frame made by nodak or other quality frames instead of from a flat. I built my first ak from a flat. It is possible to heat treat the critical wear points, but to heat treat the entire receiver will require a jig to keep the frame from warping.

I wanted to revive this thread since I'm thinking of assembling a couple of kits I have. I was thinking of getting the tools from ak-builder but am still missing a press. Anyone have a 12 ton press for rent or sale?
-
I've been watching the DDR kits that pop up sell like hot cakes; not even 15 minutes after they are posted, sold out.

Like this one? http://armsofamerica.com/partskits-2.aspx

come on over, I have a few flats that needs bending

The internet says you can build an ak from shovel
http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/threads/179192-DIY-Shovel-AK-photo-tsunami-warning
not the ugliest ak i've seen.

I built my first ak flat from a jig made from less than $25 worth of bolts, angle iron and 1" strap steel. I found the plans on the net. It works but it takes a while to build it.
I agree that you would absolutely be much better off building your first ak from a quality receiver like one from nodak. For your first build buy a kit with a barrel that is fitted/head spaced.
It will save you a lot of trouble. Good luck on your project. PM me if you cannot find a suitable kit with a head spaced barrel. I may be able to find one for you.

always wanted to try this

I have an old kit with barrel and nodak receiver. That's definitely the way to go. I just need the tools. Suka do you have a press?

Shootz! I will order the riveting tools and a few sets of rivets, is there anything else needed?
