Just a reminder that stormy conditions might hit in a few days.
-
We may have 2 storms coming our way, back to back, >:(
-
We are overdue for a hit. Hope all you prepper nutz are ready. ;)

She just upgraded herself to a category 4 hurricane.

Batten down the hatches

Julio looks like to the interesting one. Current forecast shows it running over us as a hurricane. The first one cuts a path for the atmospheric conditions and the second walks through unimpeded.

The projected path for the first one seems to be a "connect the dots" of the islands. The reports I've read has the storm losing power in the next few days, but it's the path that caught and is holding my attention. Haven't seen that many reports of the trailing storm, but sounds like an interesting scenaio that you mentioned.
Went to Longs yesterday and bought two cases of water. That's part of my normal routine to buy and go through (drink at home and other on the go type stuff) water on a regular basis and rotate and maintain stock. I noticed lots of people buying water and the water shelf was half stocked with the sale water mostly gone.
-
Don't always drop into the first wave, often times the bigger ones follow.
Going over my stuff in general but I am topping off vehicles, gas cans, propane and running generators and transfer switch.
-
Semper Paratus !
-
:shake: its really the 2nd one we should watch out for, if the first one hit us hard we should be ok, but with the 2nd one following it would only given us 48 hour at most time to react, idk if most of the older homes could with stand another hit with so little time to do repairs, rain would soften up the grounds, could have alot of flooding and landsides, run off into the sewage drains, and contaminating the water,

I went to walmart, alot of ppl getting water nd gears too, I got a few of the 3 gal water bottle for $7 and water hand pump for $12, big family so I knew we have 1000 water bottles all over the house, but as well I got family coming over to stay with us, and bum off water and food each time something happens, its sad ppl careless about things like this, if shtf I would have to turn them away to take care of my wife and own immediate family
-
Long's and the supermarkets in Hilo were pretty busy on Sunday morning. The gas lines at Safeway were already backed up also. Luckily I needed gas on Saturday for my mower, so I topped off at the same time.
-
Yep. Filled up gas this morning. I start early, so not really anyone around at that time.
Over time, I've accummulated a good amount of canned food and water. I could use more, but I should be good for a while. In the event that a bigger storm comes around, I'll likely have to head over to my dad's place anyways to make sure he's ok. In that case, he's more "prepared" than I am with two cars that are rarely below 1/2 tank of gas, backup generator and a decent amount of food. He's getting up there in age, so I'd be over there anyways to make sure he's set. I live in a condo and he lives in a house with plenty of space and supplied to cook outside and stuff.
I bet the gas stations and stores will be getting slammed in the next few days, depending on how the storm progresses.

That's rough man. It's family, but if they don't take can steps to prepare for themselves and depend on you, then that's really not right, especially if it affects your immediate family.

I got a coupla questions:
1) how many gallons per case of the bottled water? (I don't need, just curious; I stored in jugs already).
2) What do you guys do about windows for hurricane? Duct tape seems impossible to remove later. Plywood, not everyone can hammer and screw plywood in.
-
I would used blue painters tape first then duck tape over it

I'd have to check, but I think the ones that I buy are usually 16.0 fl oz, so 24 in a case is about 3 gallons.

Is the blue tape safe for tint? I live in a condo so the windows are all tinted.

I would not tape a window in a hurricane.

If plywood is not an option for you due to the construction of the window, would corrugated aluminum or metal be an option? I would try folding a large blue tarp down to fit the window and duct tape that into place. I'm going to try this out if my wife lets me.
-
forget the tape. it'll never work unless you cover every square inch of glass.......maybe. if something comes through the window at 60 mph what's gonna stop it? not tape! just figured out i need 18 sheets of plywood for my house and it should take a day to cut and screw into place if needed........but, i hope i don't have to. :D
-
Oh good, one less thing for me to do :geekdanc:
Not planning on staying here if it hits anyway, this condo is like 80% windows.
Edit: Just came from Costco gas, lines getting a little long already even though most people still at work.

If any of you need Honda generators Aloha Power Equipment got a sale till Wednesday but I wouldn't wait
Cause it's going fast...
Honda eu2000. $999 + tax
-
They are out but are taking pre-orders for the same price.
-
Those EU2000s are great. I got one after the Japan tsunami/earthquake scare. When set on the ECO setting, it'll go a long ways on a tank of gas. My plan was to use it to run my refrigerator and microwave in a major power outage.
-
The last time Ewa Beach had no power for several days was terrible. Very hot inside and outside the house. Most of our food in the freezer had to be cook. Never again I wanted to put my family in a bad situation. I stongly agree on buying and investing on a super quiet Honda EU2000 for small use. I use Led christmas lights, instead of candles, and string around the area. I use marine gas for both my gernerators and service life should last you long time. Some people think that a house with Solar PV will have electric. Thats incorrect, no power, no electric unless they have a battery bypass system. So I suggest getting a Honda 4000-6500 and install a transfer switch panel to your house. It should supply most of your needs, fans, lights, stove, microwave, etc. Be prepare. I be gone off Island before the storm come, so watch out for each other and take care of yourself. Aloha

Longs was crowded tonight after the 6 pm news but they had everyone stocking the shelves with canned goods, paper goods and water. Helped a few old ladies load cases of water into their carts (after I picked up my supply). No lines at the gas station but that's likely to change now that the word's out. We'll see!
-
Gas station is probably out of gas. My neighborhood gas station was out around 5:00pm.

Naw, they had gas--I filled up. Maybe I was lucky or my timing was perfect. Anyway, they're probably gonna get swamped later tonight or tomorrow. 'm not going anywhere near costco tomorrow!

Nuts in there
A guy told me as I walked in "think hard before you enter"
I gave my cart to a guy and warned him
He thinks it's crowded because it's Monday

Damn I gotta go Costco tomorrow to buy supplies for my restaurant :shake: At lease I'm buying the non hurricane stuff so shouldn't be too bad I'm hoping
-
Why do people buy bottled water? I just don't get it. A five-gallon bucket and one teaspoon of bleach, that's five person-days of drinking water. And it's mighty close to free!

Went to Dillingham Costco around 7pm, people were waiting for water to be restocked.
-
Back to back storms really ups the risk of flash flooding/landslides due to ground saturation and power outages due to trees. Don't get a lot of good blows here - first storm will weaken, second will bring 'em down. I don't anticipate major breakdown of society or anything haha, but certainly planning for contaminated water and electrical outages is prudent.
My canned stores have gotten a bit low, so replenished a bit, will do more tomorrow. FWIW in town I haven't noticed much of a run on things yet. Expect that will change.
Course could be nothing major, but doesn't hurt to be prudently prepared.

Sadly half my fambam is prepared/preparing for the storm, while the other side is playing " the boy who cried wolf" scenario and isn't prepping anything. Don't want to have to tell them I told you so.

If anyone needs a place to ride out the storm in the Waimanalo area, let me know. :shaka:
Dude, that is one helluva offer! You make me feel ashamed.
-
HK Costco was down to last pallets of water at about 2-3pm. Hopefully there are are still butane cannisters available tomorrow.
Family is evacuating if it hits, but I'll stay put; too many crackhead robbing when disasters hit, and I always wanted to do that lieutenant Dan scene from Forest Gump

Got my fuel, food and hydration covered and got the boards waxed up for the surf think Im g2g!

Foodland Beretania water is now pretty picked over, assume they'll restock. I picked up some more canned goods and rediscovered 2 cases of canned goods, so at this point.. time to kick back and relax!
Just remember to get gas before last minute!
-
FYI
If you're working and sweating, you NEED to drink as much water as necessary to stay on your feet.
Non working, figure on a Minimum of a gallon a person a day. MINIMUM

I went to gas up my big suv at 3am. All quiet.
Then went to longs to buy normal sale stuff and i was the only customer there.
It was quite a pleasant experience.

Because nobody but you wants to drink "bleach water"

Stopped by Sack n Save on the way into work this morning. I was going to swing by Longs or some other shop to buy some starch, like instant noodles and stuff. I have a good amount of canned food (meats, veggies, fruits, etc). It was just before 6 am and it was pretty empty. Shelves seemed pretty well stocked and lots of hurricane prep types stuff out on pallets in the aisles. After seeing pics of what Walmart looked like in PC and town, I was surprised.
Since I was there and it wasn't busy, bought some more canned goods that were on sale.
-

dont forget to clean up outside your house
secure any potential projectiles.
-
Costco Iwilei still has water but going quick. Food like spam, vienna sausage, etc are well stocked
-
Just told the wife to pick up another mechanical can opener. All this food does us little good if the one opener we have breaks.
Dumb, but typical.
Got propane, generator has gas, cars full, water plenty, pool full, water filter ready if needed.
Enough ammo for our little town. Feel bad for you Oahu guys.

Was thinking about all these solar voltaic panels everywhere recently. Very light, maybe not so well anchored?
-

If they were installed properly they're supposed to withstand winds in the low 100mph range
-
Went to costco almost never maid it alive, almost had to call for a evac on the root top, kams longs in kalihi more ppl coming in, they sell water purifier pills which I need
-
If they were installed properly they're supposed to withstand winds in the low 100mph range
I occasionally design the support frames for the crystalline PV panels (similar to solar water heater panel frames) and if designed and installed properly, the frames should be good to go. However, even though some panel manufacturers state that their panels are "rated' for a certain wind speed, there are some that have failed, or come out of their frames in wind storms below the max "rating" that was stated.
If you have the thin film system, where the panels are secured via adhesive to your roof, those usually do pretty well in the wind, but will likely sustain damage from wind-borne debris.
I haven't been in winds more than around 60 mph, but even then, that was damn strong. I've seen pics and videos of super typhoons in Guam and Okinawa and that's some scary stuff. Look up video to typhoon Pongsana. Winds were reported to have exceeded 200 mph. That is until the wind meters were torn from their bases! :o

Just use unscented bleach (which you probably have)
1 teaspoon bleach per 5 gallons, double if cloudy.
Bleach actually has a ~6 month shelf life, but typically assuming you actually use it to clean you'll always have fresh stuff on-hand. Calcium hypochlorite powder is better to stock if you're concerned about long-term.
-

Was just outside looking at the satellite dishes on my street. There's 3 close by with one next door. It doesn't seem to be mounted to withstand 40-60 mph winds. Looks to be like the 3 legs are screwed down to the purlins with hollow tile blocks on them. I'm picturing 2' flying saucers going through someone's picture window.
-
Always good to have few 5 gal. buckets on hand. There's going to be enough rain to fill them all. Should drinking water stop coming out of the faucets, you'll need them to flush the toilets. Should that run out, there's always a trip to the river.

What was it, 2008-9 we had some monster storm heading in, went out to score a Honda generator almost last minute, finally found a floor model at Aloha Power on Nimitz. i am sure you have checked with them. Was ready to buy one of those mondo construction jobs, but really wanted the one-hand portable deal.
No manual or accessories, and had one outlet with the twist industrial type connection, but I did not care.

Needed to go to Lowes and Home Depot, so went into town. Lowes no big deal. Took note, no gas cans. No biggie. Needed to go to Home Depot. Turned up Alakawa (11:00) and holy crap. Decided to skip Home Depot but everyone was trying to get into Costco. Costco Gas backed up, waaaay back . Went towards Liliha to get on H1 and the cars were backed up to the freeway headed towards Costco. Unbelievable. Jump on H1 to Hawaii Kai. Thought my son and I would check out HI KI Costco and pick up some pizza and hot dog for lunch. Almost couldn't get into the parking lot. So we get lucky and find a parking space right away. Entire lot full from Costco all the way to City Mill. Cars backed up. No shopping carts for Costco. People are following shoppers out of Costco to their cars in order to get their carts.
So we walk into Costco to check it out. Checkout lines on both sides of Costco run all the way to the rear of the store near the Alcohol section on one side and back to the seafood on the other side. Unreal. So we leave the store and figure there is no way to get a hot dog and pizza. When we get outside the food line is only about 3 people deep. Great, we get our food and sit down next to a lady perhaps in her mid to late 50's. Very well dressed, well spoken and an air of intelligence / confidence. This is where the situation gets funny and the following conversation ensues....
Lady mentions, "You don't have a cart, you must not have been inside yet. You better try to get a cart out here."
Me - "We don't really need anything, we stay prepared year round."
Lady - "Oh, thank goodness, so do I. I just figured I would come to Costco to shop and when I saw the lines I said forget it and decided to just eat a hot dog." She then went on to say, "These people have no clue. Don't they understand that if a "real" storm hits these islands and the power goes out, it isn't going to only be for a few days. It may be weeks or months."
Me - I just laugh and say "I know, I get it".
Lady says, "Don't they know that people will get desperate and things may get ugly." I think I am in a freaking movie at this point. She continues to say, "But we are well prepared for those situations and protect our selves and our homes, aren't we" as she kinda lifts her eyebrows.
As my 10 year old son sits there smiling, I tell her "Not to worry we have that more than well covered."
My son - "Boy do we have that covered." and he laughs.
Lady - She just smiles and with a wink she says "Yes we do". She then continues to say, "I am originally not from here, but how many of "us" do you think there are here in Hawaii? 10%?"
Me - "I tell here that there are a lot of liberals in the islands and I would think that the numbers would be less, lucky if it hit 2-3% and that would include those of the Mormon faith, and many of those are not following the 1 year rule."
She just laughs and says that her grand kids says that Grandma has everything, were going to her house. The conversation continues and she eventually leaves.
After that conversation, I left with a huge smile on my face thinking about the "Prepper Granny" from Hawaii Kai, but as I finished my hotdog I was just left shaking my head thinking, "these people picking up a shopping cart of items are just pissing into the wind if something big happens." I then remember the good ole motto from my youth, "Be prepared", always.

If people worried about water, what about going to Menehune or Aloha Water and open an account and get bottle waters.

Was talking to one of those NIMBY types new to Hawaii who was not preparing or worrying at all.
She said she was not even clearing/securing yard furniture, pots, lumber etc... as " how bad can 40-60mph winds be ?"
I told her to put her lawn chair, bar-b-que, etc... on the hood of her car and do 50 mph.
If if it breaks the windshield, it should be tied down ! :geekdanc:
NOTES:
Make a copy (flashdrive) of your home /renters insurance.
If your copy blows away with the house, it will save you a bunch of grief when you try to make a claim. :shake:
Other copies of gun registration, car insurance/title, marriage license and other inmportant docs should also be on this flash drive.
Keep it around your neck or in your GB
Another tip for those with no Genny.
Put all of your frozen goods into Zip-loc Gallon Baggies.
Saves you the trouble of scrubbing all of the blood and such out of your freezer if it goes down and everything thaws. :grrr:

Good call on the ziplocs.
But note that at least for my insurance it does NOT cover hurricane. Won't post name of the company here because everyone's is different and I am sure I can buy if I pay additional. Read your fine print.

Majority of home policies don't cover floods either. You have to get it added to your policy.

So, for those not running gennies, here's a quick question. Are you better off leaving your foods in the refrigerator/freezer, or transferring them into coolers?
-
A refrigerator is usually quite well insulated as a matter of energy efficiency. So it is a large cooler.
If well packed (few spaces), a refrigerator can keep food cold for a long time.
You can even wrap the entire fridge in thick blankets, to reduce the ambient heat getting into the fridge.
-
Random Thought:
Just last week I went camping with my family on the North Shore. We do this at least once or twice a year.
There are many reasons why everyone should do this on a regular basis.
1-Unwind...Get away from normal civilized life
2- Outdoor activities
3- Family bonding and memory building
4- Familiarization with basic camping techniques
#4 applies now because if you get blasted by the storm, your life might resemble one big camping trip.
Your kids are less likely to freak out when the electricity drops out and the water faucets cease to work.
Simple meals cooked on a gas stove don't seem so foreign.
Here is another survival tip that I just thought of:
If you installed solar yard lights, you can pull them off the stake at night and bring them inside your house at night.
I notice that the 8 lights I have are pretty darn bright They could easily light up the entire inside of a house all night long.
Then put them back outside in the morning. No need to use batteries and flashlights!

+1,
but don't wrap the fridge till the power goes out or it will trap heat from the compressor.
If have a decent fridge and you don't open the fridge door, you'll be good for ALMOST 2 days.
Jackup (down) your fridge/freezer thermostat a day before the expected outage
Freeze some small buckets of water if you have room and it will help keep the freezer side frozen and they can be transferred to the fridge side if necessary.
Best if they are covered so you don't get that defrosty thingy going on.
If you get enough of them frozen, you can stash them well packed in the coolers and best case scenario, you have more water !
-
If you have an old 12 V car battery, wire up some brake light bulbs to it.
Their pretty bright.
Works even if the battery is bad and does not have enough amps to turn over the engine, but still holds some voltage. :geekdanc:

If u got 55gal trash can, put the outside, line it with a few trash bags, full it up with rain water, now u got water for flushing toilets if shtf case scenario, I clean my 2 blue ones from c&c trash can as well their about 150 gal each of water

I've posted this site several times, but I'm doing it again because it has relative info to our situation.

Go to the "How to use this site" link to navigate the site.
The Listenning to Katrina is also a VERY good read based on those who experienced Katrina.

So, for those not running gennies, here's a quick question. Are you better off leaving your foods in the refrigerator/freezer, or transferring them into coolers?
A refrigerator is actually better than a cooler. Ice may be hard to get in the event of a long term outage. I'd keep the coolers full of water.

Looks like our BI brothers and sisters are going to get hit with hurricane force winds and rain. Please Take Care!!!

If you have an old 12 V car battery, wire up some brake light bulbs to it.
Their pretty bright.
Works even if the battery is bad and does not have enough amps to turn over the engine, but still holds some voltage. :geekdanc:
BUT make sure the wires are THICK otherwise might cause FIRE HAZARD if insulation burns through.

Yes, this is no joke. Looks pretty serious from all the news and weather reports. HILO looks definitely gonna get slammed. And I saw on news up to 10+ inches rain. Flood risk is high.

Yeah, Hilo side worries me, you guys keep your heads down over there.
I am hoping our volcanoes do their thing and break the storm up a bit so the Kona side just gets a good blow and rain.

I never understood the insanity going on with bottled water. Just fill up containers jeez.
-
Rains started in Hilo right at noon not real heavy yet. Blowing about 20 mph out of the north. Got done doing the last minute stuff just as it got here. Radio's saying that it should be here just about dark.
-
We took all the tarps down at the (Glenwood) range late yesterday afternoon. Right now, it's raining and a little blustery, but so far, so good.
-
Stay safe!

I got one tree down so far. Barely hit the house. Minimal damage good news. Plenty more trees bad news. :shaka:
-
The really dark heavy clouds are coming in fast now from a more easterly direction from the Puna and volcano area. Winds were at about 40 mph with a bit stronger gusts. Al the crap blowing into my yard are from the neighbor's yard. I never saw anyone outside prepping anything all day.
-

Someone termed all the trash along the road on the way to the dump the "Hawaiian car wash" or something. Mebbe your neighbors are figuring this is a good way to get the trash out of their yard (and maybe into yours?)
We got all out small loose stuff inside, tied down lawn chairs, ran the generator powering the refrig, etc. About as set as I know how to be.
Wife said the KTA was duct taping all the windows. I said no freaking way I do that. They do that for liability from flying glass, ain't going to stop a window from breaking.
Got to explain everything sometimes.
-
I am out in puna -Hawaiian shores. Amazing we still have power and internet.
-
This is one angry storm. The leading edge should just about be on land by now. It's gusting up above 45 mph.with no rain so far. The back end of the storm might be pretty nasty. If you think you have prepared, checked, and
double checked, go and make another check while you got time. I rechecked all the way up until the first rains hit.
Good luck, people. I'll see you all after this is over. :shaka:

Anyone near waikoloa?
I have a friend there, can't reach (could be busy working or whatever). Just want to see what's the situation there and if getting worse by the hour.

I am in Kona, well south of Waikoloa and much different in environment WRT wind as you might know. No rain or wind here at the moment, power has flickered once or twice, still holding fine.
NWS radar does not show anything happening up there as far as rain, but power outages never show up?
-
I know the storm is barely over the Big Island and I'm not sure if it's related but we have some really high winds in Manoa. Started lightly around 8pm and now it sounds like my neighbors fence is gonna fly away. Anyone else experiencing this on Oahu?
-
My friend lives in HPP. He said about 2 hours ago winds maxed out and now it's down to about 20-30 mph. He don't think it went over 60 mph.
-
It's not constant. About every 20 to 30 sec intervals but it's really strong.
-
Not too bad....
-
Wind here has pretty much slowed down to maybe 10-20. Rain is light with a few bursts. Sky's starting to lighten up some. Power in my area was out since 11 last night, and came back on at 6 this morning. Was a helluva ride last night. I could hear the gusts coming from across the other end of the neighborhood. Kind of sounded like being at the airport with jets taking off. Somewhere out there a few roofs were flapping all night.
Area should be clearing out in a few hours. Gonna have to go back out and see if I have to prep for Julio.

Pearl City
Weird, all of sudden it was quiet. Then heavy rain for a minute and now just light wind......

Got up at 0600 in Kona to light rain and little wind. Light breeze since then and no more rain. Sun coming out at 0930. Power never went out.
Can see a lot of whitecaps on the ocean a couple miles offshore. Suppose that is where the shadow of Hualalei stops.

1030am
Power hiccups in Waipahu. I heard power is out on Wheeler afb.

Twice in 2 hours, the UPS on my computer equipment went over to battery for a brief second.
I think these fluctuations might be a warning of things to come.

Can't believe my in laws think one 5G jug and a few cases of bottled water is enough for these types of events

A friend's wife was told to get water, and when husband returned home, she said she got it all taken care of. One bottle of water for every adult in the home. Kids can share with adults.
NO JOKE!!!!!!!!
He then went back out to get a few cases.

Wow... what were they gonna do with the water? Gurgle it and spit it back out?

Or run it through the kidneys and call it Budweiser?

Here is how the "average" urbanized person thinks. They think of how many bottled waters they drink in a month. Since they hardly drink bottled water, they reckon a few bottles will be sufficient.
This sounds crazy but I guarantee you many think like this.
I had a buddy who said all he needs is to have enough rechargeable batteries for his iPhone and iPad and he can watch movies, communicate for help, etc. during his catastrophe (he is on the East coast).
I said, your router and Internet link might be down and the cell towers also need power.
He was shocked, never even thought about that.
He also said he just needed a water filter, not needed to store water.
I said, where are you going to get the water to filter? You going to head down to the sewers?
He couldn't understand why I asked that. He said, why can't I filter the water from the tap? It's just going to be undrinkable, but I can filter it right?
I told him the water pumps work on electrical power. He was floored.
Note that the above conversation took place AFTER all the chaos of Superstorm Sandy.
He works for a major bank, not that it has anything to do with it (probably). LOL!

If some thing really bad ever happens, there are going to be A LOT of these types expecting YOU to help them. And the number of these types are increasing daily.
