With the walk-in voting last day being Thursday and the nasty weather expected this weekend, I suggest that you get your walk-in voting done tomorrow Wednesday.

just won't be counted until the very end

You can send in your application for permanent absentee voting status up to 7 days prior to the election in which you want to start voting absentee.
Maybe it's not the ballots getting mailed so close to the election, but the applications being mailed a week before?
