I am in town close to kapiolani and university street and I live next to one of the streams that feed into the alawai. My back patio is right up against it. There seem to be hundreds of rats living in the stream. They come onto my patio and eat up my vegetable garden and scare my wife when she is doing laundry. My rat traps catch 2-4 a night but I see MANY more. I thought about buying a quiet pellet gun to shoot them but don't know the legality. There are houses all around. The way the steep banks on the stream are it would actually be "safe".
Poison is out of the question because it is a waterway.
Thanks for the help!

The BULLET/Projectile/Pellet/BB must not leave your property!
-
I know someone who bought a property next to a stream and their property line was the center of the stream.
-
I hate rats.

The BULLET/Projectile/Pellet/BB must not leave your property!
That certainly makes sense. Do you know if it's actual law though?
I doubt any of the stream is considered my property since there is a wall at the edge of my patio. The wall is on the edge of a vertical bank. The other side of the stream is near vertical and overgrown with weeds and shrubs. It's a rats playground. I saw about 12 of them last night in roughly 10 minutes while shining my flashlight around. Some were really quite big.
-
There was a guy on the forum shooting a pellet gun through a cemetery to shoot at something across the way. He got arrested. Story is on 2ahawaii kk blurted out his name.
-
How about a slingshot? Same rules probably apply but less likely to attract attention.
-
Let's say you do shoot a bunch of rats by the stream. Do we really want dead rats dropping into the stream feeding the AlaWai?
Also, unless you retrieve them, the rats that don't fall into the water will start to smell bad as they pile up along the banks.
Sounds like fun tho...
-
yup, sounds like fun.
the only good rat is a dead one.
man, i hate rats.
when i was much younger, maybe about 9 or 10, i had a friend lived by the kanewai stream that feeds into the alawai
and there were plenty rats
i remember at night time you shine the flashlight and you can see all their red eyes. gives me the creeps.
thats part of why i hate rats so much.

you're going to have to use poison to even come close to controlling the number of rats
no way you could shoot them all without drawing all kinds of attention to yourself
there are several alternatives
pm me if you are interested

Need to import more mongoose.

Found the graveyard thread. Seems that a pellet rifle is a no no since I am sure the stream is either city or county land.
Slingshot? I doubt my aim would be good enough.
Yes, dead rats would smell. Leads me to wonder - with all the live rats, surely there are many dying all the time of natural causes. Why don't we usually smell those? At any rate, if I had a legal way to kill many of them I'd worry about the smell when it happened.
I checked on poisons. Almost all the good ones are toxic to fish and animals that eat the rats killed by it. Probably a worse fine than shooting them. Pm'ed.
I did order a blowgun. I would only be able to use it on rats that were very close and even then I doubt it would kill them. I do know the darts can cause some pretty good damage though so maybe. Going to try spear head and spike darts.
So far tonight I had two victor spring traps get triggered - neither caught the rat. I've modded the spring traps to make the spring stronger and I also have nails sticking up all along where the bar strikes. Still don't catch many.
-
call the Dept. of Health and the your local council member, to get an eradication program from communicable diseases,
call action line and make the media go after the city.
but it take the fun out of killing them!
id take a few rats to rat heaven. but do it in secret.
-
Need to import more mongoose.
Yeah because that worked so well the first time around.
-
Honestly, get a couple of cats.
They really do kill rats.
-
We actually do have a mongoose living in the area. I've seen it in our patio a couple times. He is outnumbered though.
Plenty feral cats around. I don't think cats are the great rat killers of legend. A jack Russel would be 1000x better than a cat.
Last night - 5 spring traps tripped. no catches. The live trap had one. Weird, the live trap is actually the most effective. Only once was the door down without a rat inside - it's 5 for 6.
-
My friend said the wire cage traps with the cone down the middle works good.
I think longs had them on sale a couple weeks ago.
Then you can build a little colosseum for your little gladiators.

tried one of those. the bait was always gone and no rat - like 7 nights in a row. That's when I went to more lethal methods.
Saw this and it was interesting but can't find any real info on it. Also very few reviews and the ones that it does have seem fishy.

i've never caught anything in one of those cone in the middle traps

Maybe a couple of those ultrasonic rat repellers? Might at least keep them off your property.

which spring traps are you using?
the new style one with the well in the middle of the big paddle, or the old style ones with the little clip?
i tie the bait onto the clip with floss
one time we had a bunch in the ceiling above my office and the pest control guys came and they used those small dried shrimp
they used a cigarette lighter to singe it and make it smell more

Here is one of the Victors and the one I call Jaws:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/538/oedo6E.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/eyoedo6Ej)
Getting the rats to go for the bait isn't a problem. It's keeping them stuck in the trap that is. Notice how I put sharp nails on the victor and a spacer under the spring to make it stronger. Doesn't matter. They still get away much more often than not. Jaws is much better than the victor at holding on but it doesn't get triggered as often as the Victors.
Also my blowgun arrived today. However, it only had the target darts. My hunting darts haven't arrived yet.
Here is an average size rat I've been catching. The trap is 7" long and 3" wide:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/673/02aaQN.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/ip02aaQNj)
Here is a fat female that Jaws caught. Notice it just has her face. If it was the victor I'm sure it would have gotten away.

Yea the little dried shrimp works well, it's really hard for them to try and steal it w/o setting it off. You can alway try glue boards in a a cardboard box, shrimp works good as well, peanut butter and some nuts leave oils that stops the stickiness the glue. Should the action die down but signs of live rats are still present, (rats no longer hitting snap traps) try pre-baiting, baiting the trap but not setting it. let them feed for a week then set the traps. As kids we use to go down to the park where there are a lot of kiawe tree, in the trees there would be HUGE nests, so we would open up on the nest with semiauto bb pistols, when the rats run out you'd drop the pistol and grab your Benjamin or Sheridan rifle and pick the rats off the branches. Those were the good old days!!!
-
wow, that female must be pregnant
i like your mods to the victor trap, it's amazing that it isn't that much more effective
which live trap are you using?
the best trap i ever saw was at the sugar loading docks at kawaihae harbor
the bottom of a case of soda/juice, lined with a trash bag, and filled with molasses
there were LAYERS of mice/rats stuck in them
it was crazy!

It has caught 5 of the 13. Only once was it triggered and didn't have anything - and who knows, maybe i didn't set it well enough and the door fell on it's own.
edit 8/12 victor had #14 this morning.
edit: 8/13 all traps triggered last night. Only the live trap had anything. Blowgun arrived. Wife doesn't want me to use it.
edit: 8/14 one of each type trap caught one last night. body count 18.

8/18 not only didn't catch any but no traps were sprung! does this mean progress or just smarter rats? I also bought two more victors and modded them with blowdart tips instead of nails.
8/19 caught two. BC 26
8/20 only one of the older victors was sprung. found the rat that "got away" a few feet away from the trap dead. BC 27

Yes, that is the law.
Projectile must stay in/on your property.
I was shooting the "feral" chickens in my yard with a pellet gun once and the neighbor who was feeding them called the cops.
Long story short, they wrote her up for feeding the feral chickens (unlawful). 8)
I still often shoot in my yard just for practice and in case that mongoose who keeps eating my fruit sticks his head around the corner.
Currently using the Gammo Whisper.
With it's "suppressor" it's not as loud as the other air rifles.
Using the PBA ammo (extra100FPS) it's louder than other air rifles.
If you do go on a compressed air projectile rat eradication program, set up a red flood light at night, get comfy with your "equipment" , acooler and have fun night !
Between baiting, setting and emptying traps, it would take more time than I have to offer.
Around the garden and up at the ranch, we use mint/peppermint oil and plant mint where we want to keep the rats away. :geekdanc:
Place plant/oil where rats travel through or to.
Rats HATE mint.
If you nose becomes accustomed to the mint/peppermint oil, time to reapply.
Planting mint is less expensive, lasts longer and you can make Mint Julip's with it, right Tom?

disappear for a couple days and the thread revives lol. Did n't post the last ocuple days mainly because I didn't catch anything.
8/21 3 victors spurng - no catch.
8/22 1 victor sprung - no catch.
The rolling drum over a barrel - I tried it. All it did was feed the rats. never caught anything with it for about 2 weeks. Lots of peanut butter was eaten though.
-
Holy crap, I woke up this morning and I expected to find maybe one rat or some sprung traps. Instead I find a rat in each of the five victors and one in the live trap. Jaws had not been sprung.

I use the old fashion bucket trap with good success. Rat tries to reach from bucket rim to seeds bellow. Falls in and drowns. Trap can hold 3 large 10" rats before needing to be emptied.
Fill large bucket 1/3 with water
pour sunflower seeds into bucket enough to cover water
make wood plank ramp from ground to top of bucket
check every day. Remove dead rat with shovel and repeat. Will also catch mongoose.

Salted or unsalted? Shelled or whole? :shaka:
This sounds tryable. I've already caught rats in the past by accident in 5 gallon buckets half full of water.
also 8/24 11:50 pm. have already caught 2 tonight. body count 35 2nd edit: 1 more before midnight. that makes 9 caught today 36 total.
8/25 am 2 more. bc 38

I took some videos tonight. Here is one. The flashlight I use is a small Cree led flashlight. View in full screen since the action is a tiny part of the screen. Forgive the vertical shot. I stood in a small bit of rain to capture this.

i don't know if any amount of trapping is gonna control that population
i think you need a bait that they will take back to the nest and feed the young
and even then, in a few weeks/months a new population will move back in

I live near the canal in Kailua. And there are a bunch if rats. I was having trouble catching them at first with the snap traps. Until I did a little modifying.
I took two loops of burlap string. About 1/2" in diameter. And looped them under the triangle wedge of the pressure plate/trigger. Then folded the triangle piece down so they wouldn't come loose. Then I pack the loops with peanut butter.
It worked like a charm. I caught about 10 rats over 3 days about a month ago. And once I modified my traps I only had 1 instance where the trap tripped and didn't catch a rat.
My reasoning for modifying and the reason I think it works so good is that the rats can't just steal the peanut butter off the trigger plate anymore, they have to actually jerk on the burlap string to get the peanut butter. I have also used twist ties in the same method with similar results but I think the burlap works better.
Also one key is to make sure you have fresh snap traps. Once they get rusted/old they lose a lot of their pop.
I can take pictures when I get home in September if you want.
-
Also I would go the legal route and complain to government reps. I know they occasionally go along and clean those ditch/streams out and remove all the vegetation and stuff. Which would give a lot less habitat for rats
-
After having had 6 in the traps yesterday morning I was a little disappointed to find nothing today.
Body Count still at 38.
mill8316 - the triggers are pretty darn sensitive. I doubt a rat is eating any of the peanut butter without triggering it. However, I do have a problem with cockroaches eating the peanut butter. 4-5 roaches can eat a lot of peanut butter in a very short time. I have seen them clean a trap in 15 minutes. I re-bait before going to sleep if it's gone. As far as them escaping when it triggers - I think the rats are just too big and strong. Fewer get away now with the barb mod but it still happens. They've been escaping even when the traps were brand new. The only one they never escape from is the live trap - which brings me to:
A short while ago I mentioned the live trap had been sprung but had nothing. I was really surprised. My neighbor tells me last night that the trap had caught a pigeon and he let it loose.

Most of the rats at our house come out around dusk to midnight. And I am usually up at that time. So if I have the traps set I just put a red Ryder BB gun by the door with a flashlight taped to it. And when I hear a trap I head outside and shoot it in the head, then rebait and wait some
More.
I know the trigger plates are sensitive but before I modded them with the string loops I actually watched more than one rat just chomp away at pb and the trap never triggered.
I think I might try the nails in the board mod, but I was worried about splitting the board. I guess if I get thin finishing nails.

I'll give the string method a shot. Many mornings the bait is gone without a trip but I've been assuming it was roaches since I have seen that happen.

I called the cities vector control. I was told that due to budget cuts a couple years ago they only have 1 inspector/exterminator guy who handles complaints for the whole island. He also said feel free to use poison until he can get around to my area. I mentioned all the poisons said not to use around water. "Well yea, that's another issue" and left it at that...
It kinda makes sense that I've noticed the population explosion around now. They did use to have an full time rat control division consistently doing poison all over the Waikiki/Honolulu area but since they've stopped - the buggers have procreating at an exponential rate.

And I wonder if the C&C is calculating the potential cost of liability if/when somebody gets sick and dies from a rat-carried illness?
Remember, fleas from infected rats is how the great plagues in Europe started.
How we worry so much about mosquitoes carrying Dengue Fever but allow rats to reproduce unchecked is beyond me.

Damn bro that's a hell of a lot of rats. I'd get the Costco sized peanut butter and stick a 5lb load of tannerite in it. :o
-
BC 43. One had gotten free and was still very much alive but acting dazed. It was on the ground in an area it wouldn't easily get away from in its current state Figured this was my chance to try the blowgun.
The first hunting dart was a direct headshot between its eye and ear. It penetrated but I don't know how far. Did it go through the skull? I don't know but it was certainly stuck.
I didn't want to prolong its suffering so I continued putting hunting darts into it (6 total). About half went completely through the thick of its body. Thing poor thing was in bad shape at this point but still alive. I was able to grab it with BBQ tongs, put it into the live trap, and drown it.
From this I decided the blowgun I have would not be adequate to kill a rat humanely.

wow.. kinda crazy timing after posting that last vid but...
After setting my traps tonight I was messing around with some of the plants in the patio garden when I hear a *thack splash*
What was that?
*thack splash* *laughing from what sounds like 3-4 guys*
Go look over the wall and I can see that someone on my side of the stream a couple houses down is shining a weak flashlight along the far banks edge. I can't see them due to shrubs and bushes between us.
*thack splash*
ah ha!! someone has a pellet gun!! Since they have a weak flashlight and are trying to find the rats I decide to help.
Pull my very bright cree led light out of my pocket (from the videos) and spotlight the far bank looking.. find one and keep the light right on it.
*thack* *high pitch squeal* and the rat runs deep into the undergrowth. Hear a bit of thrashing then nothing (other than the guys laughing).
For the next several minutes I keep spotting them as the guy shoots. He probably shot 6-8 times and for sure hit 3 of them. It didn't seem like any were insta-kills but the rats acted like they'd been hit. After a short while they all seemed to go into hiding and I stopped looking after a couple minutes of not seeing any.
It was kinda neat.. spotter and sniper - didn't know each other, couldn't see each other, and didn't talk to each other but it was obvious we were working as a team.

Bought three more Victor traps today. Was almost finished modding the first one by putting dart head around the kill bar. My woman comes by - "what are you doing?"
"modifying the traps so the rats can't escape as easily" - already knowing she wouldn't approve.
Of course she now wants to know more and looks closer at what I'm doing "what are those things"
oh boy..
"sharp pokey things so they can't pull out of the trap easily"
"what!?" "that's cruel!" "I can't believe this" then leaves the man cave...
comes back a minute later..
"that's horrible! it's one thing to kill them quickly but that makes them suffer!" - almost in tears.
"ok ok, I won't mod the rest of them"..
Of course that does little good.. She left the room again and is now in the shower. I fear she is going to have dreams of little impaled animals screaming all night in pain as they slowly die... because of me.. the monster.
TLDR: Women don't want to know details of how pests are gotten rid of. That is part of what makes PETA so effective.
-
Your screwed...I do like the mod idear.
I cant use snap traps cause our neighbors cat roams the neighborhood. It does its share of killing rats so I leave it alone

Wow bro that is a large body count.. Love your updates boss. Keep it up
I'll keep updating the body count if simply because this has become a log. I'll also just keep editing my last post so it doesn't bump the thread unless I get a reply. So just because the thread doesn't bump doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been updated.
Last night only 1 of 8 victors and the jaws had been tripped. The tripped one was one of the new ones that hasn't been modded. The live trap however had a small rat.
BC 62
9/19 BC 64
9/20am 3 victors sprung. none caught.
Didn't catch anything 21/22. Caught one this morning. BC 65
9/26 bc 66 the catches have really slowed down.
9//27 none caught. I will only update when I catch now.

My woman took a two-week trip to the mainland so I went to Walmart yesterday and bought a beeman silver kodiak x2 changeable barrel air rifle. I figured if my neighbor could do it without getting in trouble I should be able to also. However my very first shot sounded like a 22lr even with heavy .22cal lead pellets. Researched and figured that it probably dieseled and sent the pellet supersonic. I ran some cloth through the barrel (lots of oil in there) and shot it again. This time there wasn't the supersonic crack however it was still pretty damn loud - both pellet exit and spring action.
So I researched how to make it quieter. Now the sound of the pellet exiting the barrel isn't AS loud however the spring is still very loud - at least for the middle of the night. It just will not do. I'm going to return it to Walmart.
I've already ordered a Benjamin trail .22 nitro piston as it is supposed to be quieter. It should arrive Thursday. A pcp rifle sounded perfect but the cheapest one is well over $400 and you have to get a $200 pump also.
Also read the rifles get quieter once they break in. I need a good quiet pellet trap that I can use indoors for a couple hundred shots.
-
This has by far become my favorite running thread. Fun light exciting and entertaining. Keep it up. I say we have a swap meet get together after the 100 one.

At the rate I was catching them 3 weeks ago I would've predicted 100 by now. It may be awhile at the current rate to get 100 in the traps. Although I see them every night I'm not catching even 1 some nights now. I even have more traps than I started with (9)

On the PCP rifle, there is the Benjamin Discovery for a little bit less than $400. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0018LETH0/?tag=2ahawaii-20 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0018LETH0/?tag=2ahawaii-20)

Thats where I got mine with the pump. It was a package deal at less than $400. It is LOUD without the TKO brake.
-
I suspect if it is REALLY loud then you may be breaking the sound barrier and getting the sonic boom crack. Maybe heavier pellets will slow it down to be quieter. PyramydAir said this is one of the quietest non pcp guns http://www.amazon.com/Umarex-2251304-Octane-ReAxis-22-Caliber/ (http://www.amazon.com/Umarex-2251304-Octane-ReAxis-22-Caliber/) but I'm not sure it'll be very quiet either after reading a lot of reviews. seems some think it's loud and some don't. Maybe the ones who think it's loud are going supersonic.
with the tko brake (and heavy pellets) would the discovery be quiet enough for shooting at midnight with houses packed tight?
just watched this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ealk_zsbUg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ealk_zsbUg) if that is considered quiet i might be out of luck.

The trail NP is pretty quiet
I have the NP XL and it's much more quiet than any break barrel spring piston
I would be down for a rat hunt
I hate rats!
-
The trail NP is already on it's way so can't cancel it but I ordered this one tonight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiLeK4W__fQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiLeK4W__fQ)
It's cheaper and seems to be hollywood silencer quiet.

It uses two co2 cartridges but I'm not going to be shooting 1000's of shots with it.

Hmm...not really sure how quiet it is but I did shoot a pest right next to its pal and his/her pal just looked over to see its pal gone. I then followed up with its friend. Mine is a .22 shooting a hollow point - not sure about the weight. It sure is much quieter with the TKO. Without the TKO it sounds like a .22LR.
-
Guess I will find out tomorrow evening. Both of the guns I ordered will be arriving.
I am sure the trail NP will have enough power to do the job but it might be too loud. I'm hoping the fusion will be quiet enough but I am worried about the power there. Expecting ~650-675 fps with 8 grain pellets. I've no way to measure it though. I'll just have to see what happens when I shoot a rat.
-
I use the trail NP XL in early mornings bc it is pretty quiet
at first i thought the fps was really slow bc it is so quiet, the sound of it hitting a can is louder than the gun firing
could be bc its the first NP airgun i got, compared to the others its quiet
but see what you think of it.
-
One main reason I chose a PCP is less moving parts. The barrel is fixed and there is no spring to move air. It is a lot more accurate than a Crosman break barrel I had.
-
you're going to have to use poison to even come close to controlling the number of rats
no way you could shoot them all without drawing all kinds of attention to yourself
there are several alternatives
pm me if you are interested
napalm? :shake:

Both rifles came in today. I set up the fusion with the scope from the NP (way better) and also built a silent duct seal pellet trap for indoor practice. The fusion is a little loud for 1am but not too bad - certainly NOTHING like that Beeman Kodiak. Its .177 pellets seem tiny compared to the .22 pellets. I am a little concerned about stopping power as the pellets only go about 3/8"" into the duct seal. I assume the duct seal is tougher than a rats body. I'm using wad cutters for practice and have some mushrooming pointy ones for hunting rats. Hope they penetrate better. same 7.56 grain weight. My heavier hunting pellets come on Monday.
Having a slight focusing problem with the scope as I'm only shooting at about 5-7 yards and minimum distance is supposed to be 10. Not terrible but could be better.
I have a bug hunter coming on Monday that has a minimum distance of 3 yards. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005VRYHNI/?tag=2ahawaii-20 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005VRYHNI/?tag=2ahawaii-20)

woot! Just killed my first rat. First shot at one and got 'em ;D He was sticking his head out of a burrow across the stream. *pshtt*, a little squeek, and down to the waterline he tumbles and lies dead :geekdanc:
I rubber banded my cree flashlight to the barrel. It's like shooting in daytime. Obviously not the best mount but it worked. Scope was more clear too with a little more range than I had indoors doing target practice.
I had shot 32 pellets at the target before hunting with the same charge of co2. I'm supposed to be able to get ~50-60 shots per cartridge(s).
Noise? yes, there is a short pshtt but an occasional one shouldn't bring unwanted attention if I don't fire it too often. It is quieter outside than inside the house. I'll still try the nitro NP during the daytime to check out it's noise due to its superior kill power but I think it will be too loud for late night.
-
woo hoo! I am now 3 for 3.
the second one was a big one across the stream. Can't positively confirm a kill but I damn sure hit it. It went deep into the underbrush where I couldn't see it. It was squeaking and thrashing around for a a good 30 seconds then stopped. Definitely not a clean kill.
The third was another big one on my side of the stream only about 6 feet horizontal away and 3 feet down from me. it was slowly walking away along a ledge by the water. I aimed for the middle of head just back the ear area since it's head was down. Got it in the neck close to the head near the spine. It fell in the water, thrashed under the water for about 10 seconds. I thought it would drown at that point however, it got to the wall and started to climbup to the ledge. Got almost it's body length out of the water before it fell back in, sank, and stopped moving. I watched it slowly be carried away by the current.
If it had been a higher power rifle I think that third one would have been an instant kill as the pellet probably would have came out it's face.
I've edited the last 3 posts for clarity and typos.
Damn, it's 2:43 am and I have to get up at 7:15 for work. Good night.
-
congrats on the kills! :shaka:
let us know how the NP goes.
-
I've been shooting the Nitro in the house using the "bad" scope. not nearly as accurate. Going to swap scopes now. It's a good bit louder than the Fusion however it is penetrating ~3/4" into the duct seal. The fusion only did about 3/8".
The owner's manual says it needs roughly 100 rounds shot through before it gets broken in and quiets down more. So I'm just shooting playdoh for now. Hope it does get quieter but I don't think I'll be shooting it outside at 2am like I can the fusion.
The third rat last night would have lost it's face for sure with the NP.
-
Dang, i had to look for 15+ minutes along the stream before I found a rat tonight. I used the trail NP with the good scope (the 3-9x scope is a lot better than the fixed 4x). The medium-large rat was on a branch overhanging the water by 2-3 feet but was still well below the top of the other side (for safety backdrop). The shot was loud enough I heard someone say "what was that?" in a yard a couple houses down. If he had bothered to look he would have seen a rat shaking violently for a couple seconds before losing its grip and tumbling into the water. It did not resurface nor did I see any sign of movement under the water.
-
just got another (5th). and yes, the trail np is WAY too fucking loud at 2:15am.
I will not be shooting it again late night when all is still and everyone is asleep.
-
Too bad the NP is too loud
But congrats on all the kills!

Ask Stang about his Stoeger ATAC.

I was much too tired last night to do any hunting since I had been only getting 3-5 hours of sleep each of the few previous nights.
Today my new scope arrived. For ~$90 it's a damn nice scope. Way better than even the one that came with the Trail NP. I thought the lighted reticules were going to help but since I have the bright flashlight I don't need them. Also - haven't set the traps since the rifles came in. It's more fun actively hunting.
Put the new scope on the Fusion, put in new co2 cartridges and started zeroing it. I guess the scope was set for something very different from my rifle and ranges I'm shooting at since the first shot was 5" away from where I aimed (at 6 yards!). Quite a few pellets later I had it zeroed in pretty good. Now it was time to start firing some of the new pellets that also came today - Gamo RED FIRE - the hollow points with the red cone of plastic in them. I figured since they are a different weight I may need to re-zero a little bit. Shot the first one and it was about an inch low and 1/2" to the right. ok, click the dials a little bit. Next shot - almost the same spot. *click click click click*. A little closer now. *clickity click* some more. DAMNIT - 2" low. At least now that I've put well over 150 pellets through the rifle since I got it the noise has started to quiet down a bit.
Earlier, I had noticed that with my hole puncher pellets if they didn't slide smoothly into the barrel as I pushed the bolt forward they tended to fly a little off course. NONE of the Gamos were going in smoothly. I try a few more and the aim kept getting worse. Now I'm thinking these gamo hunting pellets just aren't going to work with my rifle. Boy, am I going to write a scathing review on Amazon! Screw all those people who swear how accurate they are. I resign myself to the crossman pointy tips. I go to rezero again since I've done so much clicking. The first shot with the hole punchers - I didn't even see where it hit and couldn't tell with all the holes everywhere. Put a fresh target up. Shoot again at the target in the very center of the sheet (multiple bulls on the sheet). It hits about 4" low and 1" to the right. :wtf: ??? Did the Gamos do something to the rifle?? I shoot once again and I can see the pellet flying to the target through the scope. It punches through the paper and I hear it fall to the bottom of the target box. (http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/100x75q90/674/Qt27bL.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/iqQt27bLj) DOH!!! I had run out of co2 *lol* No wonder the shots had been getting so bad (and noise so quiet...)
Put new co2 in and try the Gamos again. 3-4 shots and a several clicks later it seems to be doing ok. Put up a fresh target and get this:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/540/I1k7L5.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/f0I1k7L5j)
Each bulls is barely bigger than a dime and smaller than a penny.
YAY! The Gamos are going to work =)
For giggles I took a pic of the duct seal behind the target. I had mashed it the other night so only the shots from the past 2-3 days are showing. The really deep holes with shiny pellets are from the Trail NP. The shallower ones are from the Fusion. I think you'll be able to tell which ones were shot with low co2 pressure.
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/905/dZW0A0.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p5dZW0A0j)
Ok, so it's hard to tell how deep they are from looking straight on.
Here is an angled shot. The clean holes where you can't see a pellet are probably the Trail NP. Some of those pellets went almost an inch deep.
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/537/wvwrps.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/exwvwrpsj)
Decide the accuracy is good enough for hunting and I should still have enough co2 for a few more good shots. Go outside and start looking. Almost immediately I see one straight across the stream by the water. Line up a head shot and hit him just behind the jaw. He jumps and falls into the water as a good size blood slick forms around him. That Gamo really made him bleed. He was dead in just a few seconds.
Only two or three minutes later I see 2 of them a bit further away (30 feet?) on a "beach" part of the bank (low tide). Give the dial a couple clicks (1/4moa each click) and nail one of them. Not sure exactly where I hit but he flips, spasms a couple times and dies there on the beach. Of course the other ran into the shrubs/weeds but it wasn't long before he came out to check on his dead comrade. I don't have a clear head shot so I say screw it and aim for the rib cage area. *pfft!* *whack* *squeal* He hops a couple times and runs off further away into more shrubs where I can't see him anymore. Can't say if he is dead right now but he aint doing so well for sure.
Kept looking for more for about 10 minutes and didn't see anymore. It starts raining and I decide to come in and tell tonight's story. If it stops raining I'll change co2 carts and go out again.

+ 1 more shot. He was on a branch just above the water. he started going back up the branch towards thick brush so had to fire quick. Hit him, he fell in, and swam towards shore where I couldn't see what happened to him. Another one having a bad time if he lived.
Shot - 9

I find that Beeman and H&N pellets load and seat into the breech of the barrel very nicely
I like the Crow magnums and Kodiak, as they are the heavier weight ones for Beeman and H&N
both brands are basically the same.

You'd better get on over to Mo'ili'ili then. Shot 4 tonight. One of them was under my house (on stilts) and I was able to retrieve it.
Here is my trophy - body about 6" long. Pretty happy with my aim. I haven't missed yet.

Yes, that circle under it's eye is the entrance. It didn't come out the other side though. I don't think that shiny spot is the pellet. I think it's just glare off the blood from the flash.
Maybe I'll go post it in the hunting pictures thread lol.

Nice keep it up, love your post! Motivates me and the crew to go & eradicate critters.
Used to do rat hunting in hikai, rats used to steal my fishing bait. Thought it was giant a'ama crabs. When I found out it was rats used to spray the pile with a full auto bb gun. BBs used to spark up the rock holes like tracers. Super fun till City poisoned the place.
Good luck and go getum.

Seriously, you make me envious of your rat problem. I'm sure you'd rather the rats were gone, but I want you to know just how much vicarious entertainment you are providing to the community with this continuing narrative!

Almost midnight. Although I saw probably 6-8 rats tonight I was only able to shoot two of them before they disappeared into heavy ground cover. Both went into the water so no pics :-[
Think I'm going to mod the trigger on the fusion. It is kinda sticky and rough. I found a DIY online.
There are tons of mods you can do to it but most of them are currently beyond my ability.

had my first miss tonight =(. Da bugger was only about 1 yard from the end of my barrel too! Why did I miss? My scope is zeroed at about 7 yards. Center of scope is about 2" above the barrel. I took that into account but I still hit low. =( Clean barrel with a shotgun type bead at the end would have been better for that close.

this sounds so much fun...where is this? If you need help I have my TKO muzzled Discovery
-
I would be cool with you coming over to pop a few rats and maybe a beer or two. I'm in Moilili - University and Kapiolani. It would need to be soon though as my wife gets back on the 18th and I know she's not going to approve of me shooting the rats.
I'd love hear the braked discovery since i considered that option. A combination of time to get the brake and not knowing how it actually sounds like held me back.
I have to let you know though, the rat population is down a whole lot from what it used to be. Sometimes I'll go out and look for 10 to 15 minutes and not see one. Used to be I could see a dozen in 5 minutes.
I was considering getting the TKO brake for my fusion but tko said i would have to send my rifle to them for installation since it wasn't made specifically for the fusion. Lots of extra cost involved and being without the rifle during this time while my wife is on the trip has held me back.
I was actually planning on returning the rifle the day before my wife got back but something happened that made me decide to keep it - although my wife will whine (possibly badly). I got hooked up with a gunsmith on the mainland who he said he will make me one for cost of materials and shipping. It's going to be awhile to get it since he is working on it in his spare time but he has started already. I've seen pictures of his work - it is professional. I can't send the gun back after someone does something like that for me.
-
Was just watching a rat peeking out of a puka not ten feet from my "office" window this morning. Such an easy shot, but with a screen in the way..............
Think the wife would object to installing shooting ports? It is for a good purpose after all.
Satisfied myself by putting a trap out there, but with my luck, bait will be gone and trap unsprung. Such an easy shot.................
-
Robbie check out the poster pic for the movie Willard. Is that the rat's facial expression before you pull the trigger? Lol
Grew up watching movie Willard, boy's pet rat turned Godfather of vermin.
Guess you're doing circle of life and palu fo crabs and talapia. Lol
Grandma raised me in Kamuki / Kapahulu, Crane park & Kaimuki river, favorite hunting grounds with slingshot and a pack of BBs in the 60s. Just like Dennis the menace, was fine back in the good ole days.
Keep up the good work. Favorite read, just play it cool, know all about Wahine drama shooting vermin. Who knows your wife might get into it later.
My daughter was watching Bambi said Daddy I know you are the bad man who killed Bambi's mom. Said no honey Daddy shoots bucks. Too young to know "bucks" just figured it out seeing bone yard & heads.
Finally got wife & Mom to like pigs didn't think Mom would start to feed um. All the old folks in the neighborhood do, guess taught not to waste food & fun to watch.
Sorry to ramble, but my young daughter insisted to shoot the boar when she saw boar bitting baby piglets. Shooting pops Dennis has that skull but that's another story. Boar fed lots of happy Boy Scouts. Really enjoy your updates & pics.
Aloha!

Barret - I highly doubt she'll "get into it" but maybe in best case scenario she'll accept me doing it lol. I know about times a changing - I had a bb rifle in 3rd grade and by the time I was in 6th grade I had a .22 rifle and a 410 shotgun. I'd go hunting in the woods around our house. This was east texas so our closest neighbor was about 3/4 mile away. Think Waimanalo with pine forest but about the size of the big island.
Tonight I spent some time tuning my rifle a bit. I hated the feel of the trigger so I sent about 2-3 hours sanding and polishing various contact points in there. Also adjusted the trigger pull. Trigger is smoooth now. Played a bit with power adjustment but I have no chrono so was kinda playing blind. Eventually settled at a lower power level than I started for noise reduction. It was the first time I took any of it apart so I'm pretty happy with myself for doing it and very happy with the trigger improvement.
When I finally went out I saw one but it was gone by the time I got the scope focused.
It's bed time now.

Airguns, in my wretched experience are touchy bastards when the power level creeps up. Anything you can do to maximize the consistency of the condition of the piece when the shot goes pays off greatly. Mechanics and hold included of course.
I spent far too much time getting my Trail Nitro NP to shoot decently. I had very high expectations based on an old Sig Hammerli spring gun that was magic and crazy accurate. Only belatedly did I find out about Chinese stuff that most airguns are these days. My RWS 48 and Disco came after my initiation into the modern state of things.
This recent journey into airgun tuning, has at least kept me away from other sinful hobbies, as i told the wife.
Now if I can get that damn mongoose to hold still for a few seconds.

Nice, I'm very interested in hearing it tomorrow. I like the case too. simple and effective. If I get to keep the rifle I will be looking for a case.
I can't wait for my hush stick to arrive.
********************
Not only are the rats scarcer now but they are getting smarter or at least more skittish.. Tonight I've seen 5 total in 3 instances under the house. They were all on the mound of dirt they built as they dug out a nest under the foundation of our patio. They used to freeze when they got hit with the super bright spot light. However tonight in first instance the single rat ran under the foundation almost immediately. 2nd time there were 3 big ones on the mound - they all ran away out the far side of the house and through the fence into the neighbors yard. Third instance a single one ran same zig zag path to neighbors yard. It's hard to get off a quick shot because I have to tilt the rifle sideways to fit through the slats that go around the house. Kneeling down and tilting your head at an awkward angle causes difficulty in seeing through the scope.Once I can finally see through it I usually need to adjust focus. I'm thinking maybe I need to put a light under there that is on all night - then they could hang out and I could shoot them from a distance without alerting them with a flashlight.
I've checked a few times tonight but haven't seen any in the stream. Can hear them squeaking further up/down the stream though. My light will reach pretty far but there is too much growth to see them. Even if I did, my scope isn't centered anywhere near 20+ yards either.
Edit 12:23am - I just heard a couple of them fighting close outside my window.

You ought to score someone's old scuba tank off Craiglist and get an adapter.
As long as the tank has a current hydro inspection so a shop will fill it, you are good for many fills with zero effort.

I noticed the pump too. That is one of the reasons I didn't spend a little more and get a pcp - it wouldn't have been a little more. it would have been a lot more after all the accessories I would be getting. Reviews on the pump say if you only weigh 150bs you are going to have a tough time getting to 3000 psi. So I'd be getting a scuba tank too etc too. Even if I did tough it out with a pump, the pump costs more than my current rifle.

Even if I did tough it out with a pump, the pump costs more than my current rifle.
I got the pump + rifle for $360 shipped from Amazon several months ago. The TKO brake was about $50 shipped.
Here's a tempting deal on craigslist http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/tag/4713389616.html (http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/tag/4713389616.html)
I like it as I mentioned before it's accuracy is amazing. I'd put it against my Compass Lake Engineering 22 upper.
The sound with the TKO sounds like this
Seismic Bomb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33SrgAn7hao#ws)
not as loud and sharp when I first shot it without - but more subdued, rubbery sound

Tempting?! HUGE Understatement. Imma see him tomorrow. If its not too loud it's mine.

Landlord caught me with the rifle last night. I didn't know how he'd react.
He said, "is that a bb gun?" sounding a bit surprised ..
Me thinking uh oh..
"That is SO cool! Did you shoot any rats yet?"
Then we get talking about air guns and he stay with me on the hunt. I shoot at one across the yard that was walking. Thought I missed - it ran away. However, about 10 minutes ago landlord texts me a picture of its body that he found today.
After awhile time to go bed. He went in his house, I decided to have one more look in the stream. There were two on a tree branch. Got one of them. By the time I reloaded the other was gone.
I am meeting the guy with the complete .25 marauder setup after work. rifle, scuba tank (inc. card for 7 more refills), hose, fittings, regulator, case, good scope, cleaning gear, lots of pellets, bi-pod thingy. He bought it all one month ago but has to move and can't take it with him. Says he has receipts. Everything for $450. I can't pass it up.
My LDC for the fusion should arrive on Saturday . I might have to get the guy to make one for the Marauder too.

That was an incredible deal on that Marauder. I'm a little jealous.
-
I was very tempted to get that Marauder! But I have no population of vermin to control since my parents' neighbors like chickens crowing :-\
-
Buy it a use it to eradicate pigs. Know Farmers who shoot big game with large cal pellet guns for crop damage control. Property owner needs a DLNR eradication permit for game mammals. There's something in regs (Page 14 line 10) about hunting game mammals with compressed air weapon. Don't know about spring powered. Somebody on 2A would know?
Any way doing all the fun on private land, no game animals involved so erelevant.
Wish I had funds to buy it. Use other methods to eradicate vermin when asked by property owners.
Sounds like a great deal for lucky buyer hopefully you. Those bigger caliber pellet guns are really loud. But if you permanently attach suppressor it's legal.
Tubes that are not permanently fixed can get you in trouble.
May be your landlord will cut your rent for being his eradicator. Wife would love that. Lol
Inquire on golf courses too, might get lucky.
Keep up it up, you make our day & look forward to your daily updates.
Go gettum!
-
thats good that your landlord is ok with you shooting the rats.
I think you are doing the community a big favor.
keep it up! :shaka:

Shouldn't say this but...
Wish some ninjas would deal with the feral vermin at UH too.
Bad when your pets get hurt or killed by ferals invading your property.

Going to meet the guy in about an hour. He said it's mine.
I texted him at 11:24 last night immediately after seeing the ad. He was still awake.

aRGH! Tried to upload a couple of pictures but they were too large. Errored out and I lost my wall of text. Anyway, I'll try this again.
Home now. Went as smoothly as you could ask for a CL meet up. For some reason I thought the hose and fittings were included in the package but they weren't (I checked the ad and sure enough they weren't). He did sell me what I needed for $50 though. I also picked up a Hatsan 25 SuperTACT for $50.
Noise - at least while dry firing the marauder is louder than my fusion (but it's packing a LOT more wallop). Until I can get a better shroud for it I'll relegate it to early evenings and use the fusion for late night stuff. The break barrel pistol is very loud. I'm not sure I want to be shooting it during the day much less at night. I'll probably sell it.
so the list of everything I got: - bipod attached to marauder, a large Leapers 4-16x50 scope, an open but looking full tin of JSB Match Diablo Exacts 350ct 25.39 grain, new sealed tin of H&N Barracudda hunter 27.47g 200ct., new sealed tin H&N Barracuda hunter extreme 28.4g 200ct,. new sealed tin of predator polymag 26g 150 ct, two clips, one almost full 80ct cleaning pellets, a new sealed small tube of silicon chamber oil. 1 used but almost full 80cf scuba tank with fresh certs and 7 free refills, the tank attachment, hose, and gun attachment, and the pistol. Got home and realized the pistol was missing the detachable stock - texted him and he was apologetic that he forgot to pack it. Said he'd get it to me tomorrow. Total $500. Could've saved $50 and not got the pistol but should be easy to resell for what I paid.
ok ok, pictures! I hear you and I haven't even clicked "post" yet.

all is not currently happy in robble land. Starting to wonder about the old saying "if it's too good to be true".
I have a feeling something is fishy but I'll explain more later. working on the gun right now.
-
This gun is NOT only 1 month old.
-
I have been ripped off.
-
in the last few hours I've gone from happy, to suspicious to realization to anger to another realization and learning to some relief (but still some anger too). Sorry but the following wall of text is my rambling thoughts trying to remember what happened.
Met the guy at kaneohe park. had told him i wanted to shoot it to see how loud it was. very local sounding guy. 5'9"-5'11" heavy build but not fat. he rode a white moped that had an alarm on it. acted super friendly. he said his brother dropped off the gear. another guy was with him. he talked alot about how he had several family member in HPD. Hence the punisher stickers and police stickers on the scope, gun case he had and in the room where his craigslist picture was taken (which he has deleted but I had a window still open and took a screen shot of it). anyway there were too many people to actually shoot a pellet so I just dry fired it. it was a little louder than my fusion but by this point I wanted it. he said he had a soft case he'd sell cheap and he'd have his brother who wasn't moving (was HE really moving?) meet me on Thursday to buy it.got home with everything.. went out to site in the scope. he had said it was sited for 40 yards and I shoot at less than 15. set up my pellet trap outside. it is a box stuck to 1/2" plywood. target is a regular size sheet of paper with several bullseyes printed. I started only about 4 yards away since i knew the scope could be way off. Aimed at center of paper bullseye. shot. it was loud. the hell? the paper had no holes. went looking and the pellet had hit the plywood about 14 " to the right of the aim point and went through the plywood. The hell? I could see it being high or low but sideways??? moved to about 7 feet away from target. shot again. kinda loud. still no hole. could not find where the pellet went. started checking out the gun. shroud was a little loose.tightened up the shroud. tried shooting one more time only 4 feet away. was crouching when I shot. it was very loud and I felt something hit my leg but not like it was a ricochet back at me.. like it came from the breech area. went back inside house to check it out closer. had a hell of a time getting the magazine out - maybe operator error as i didn't know to fully cock it. get magazine out. try looking in loading breach. don't see anything.try shining light through barrel. can't see light. try blow through barrel. it's stopped up. drop the inside of an ink pen down barrel. it doesn't go through. cut a straight piece of heavy metal clothes hanger and drop it down. hanger knock two pellets out of barrel through breech. oh.. maybe I did something wrong. heard you could load two pellets if you cocked it wrong. put just one pellet in magazine and go try shoot again. still no hole. still loud. come back in and drop hanger through and knock pellet out. Now I KNOW something is wrong with the gun. want to disassemble it but need to degas it. look up how to degas on internet. says use the special degas tool. ok.. he didn't give me one.. nor an owners manual I realize. text him asking if he has owner's manual and special degas tool. (haven't heard heard from him since he said he'd get the stock for the pistol to me.) so no choice but to bleed down by dry fire. first dry fire shot notice strong wind hit my hand near breech. next shot same thing. start looking. The o-ring the plunger is supposed to go through is missing. continue cocking and firing. the cocking starts to get VERY hard. finally, all air pressure gone. find a very good video on dis-assembly of the rifle. get the shroud off. unscrew end cap and see this:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/746/zI5rBO.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/kqzI5rBOj)
Yes, it had obviosuly been hit by a pellet. Those are chunks of lead next to it.
I look in shroud and see
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/537/iOZphe.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/exiOZphej)
super dirty. No way this is a new rifle.
pull out the baffles and find this:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/913/dMg5Ch.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pddMg5Chj)
4 of the 6 baffles had been hit by pellets.
Get shroud emptied out.
Look in shroud again and see:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/661/t4K6H2.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/idt4K6H2j)
the goddamn shroud is BENT.
continue breaking down gun. The barrel LOOKS straight. I can only pray.
Anyway i spent the last couple hours tearing it down pretty far- got trigger, hammer and cap of air tank off..
the good news? I think with a shroud replacement and tune up it'll be good as new. I want to get an o-ring kit and replace all the o-rings, clean it all up, lubricate etc. After watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCqPYmHG048 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCqPYmHG048)
I now know MUCH more about how this gun works. I think I can do the tune up if I can find a kit and shroud online. Nothing other than the shroud *seems* to be broken. I also learned how to vary the air flow and hammer strike force from the video. I don't need to sling 28g pellets at 850'/sec to kill rats. If I slow them down to 650-700 it should be quiet..
Remember folks, if it's too good to be true....
.
-
That's a bummer. I have learned every time I buy something used treat it like something's wrong and go from their. Most honest people understand and work with you. Hope all works out.
-
Unfortunate.
In hindsight, i don't think a guy with money to buy a rig like this would be riding a moped.
Could be stolen.
-
The guy actually text responded to my text from last night. Denied knowledge of anything wrong with the rifle, said he has the receipt for buying it and he'd send me a picture of it.. That was 5am this morning. Haven't seen the receipt picture yet but I sent him a pics (ones I posted above) a short while ago. I wonder if I'll get a receipt or response to the shroud pictures.
Going to call up crosman to see about getting the shroud. The gunsmith I know recommended getting a new barrel too even if the old one looks straight.
-
Sorry to hear about the Marauder. It looked like an awesome deal and the listing sounded as if the seller knew a bit about PCPs - but from your dealings with this guy there seems to be a bit more to the Marauder's background.
-
This might be a blessing in disguise. I don't think parts are too expensive and after you get it sighted in you'll know as much as you need to about taking it apart. It might still be a deal for you in the end and hopefully a tact driver at that.
Good luck.
-
Just from doing my shopping and research (yeah, you caused that!! :) ), I read that the .117 and .25 caliber versions of the Marauder are quieter than the .22 model. That might not be true with the latest production line, so more research is needed if looking at the .22.
For $550 on Amazon, the .25 is very tempting. You can save about $50 by getting the synthetic stock vs. wood stock.
The video reviews I've found have very little bad to say about these rifles.

Even if I spent $200 repairing it to like new it's still not a bad deal considering all the stuff I got. It's just not the deal I agreed to.
However, the guy has replied to me and while he still claims he didn't know it was messed up he made an offer to make it right. Guess I'm in a wait and see stage. Maybe he is stalling or maybe he is sincere.
I was actually about to call crosman to order the stuff when I got the last round of texts.
Speaking of texts, I figured out how to show them without crossing any privacy rules. I think I may have done that early this morning as one of my posts seems to have disappeared. Nothing special in it - just had his name and a link to his facebook lol.
Anyway, if you are interested here is our entire text exchange up until now. They are in sets of 3 pages each and in order. Just click first pic and then use the arrow on right side of picture that pops up to easily go to the next.
When I re-read them over - I KNEW I thought I was supposed to get a hard case for some reason. But at the meeting he said the hard case belonged to his brother and he couldn't let it go.
At the point of messages where I asked if he had owners manual or special tools I already knew the shroud was fubar ( I did need the tool to bleed off the air) and just kinda played dumb. The thing about me saying it wasn't supposed to stay pressurized was playing dumb. For a moment I thought he missed me calling him out.
Please excuse my typos. Autocorrect isn't always correct.
-
If you plan on meeting with him again be sure you have company.

I hadn't thought about meeting him again but he does still owe me the butt for the pistol, owner's manual, and degas tool. If he telling the truth about moving I should do something tonight

He is saying all the right stuff. Hope he does as he says. Anyone feel like being backup in case I'm being played? IF we meet tonight. I suspect we may have some snipers in this group lol. Kaneohe side.

That is a great idea. Now if he'd just contact me to set a time.
I stripped the barrel and rolled it across a thick pane of glass. It was close to very straight but it wasn't perfect. Can we expect perfect from an OEM barrel?
-
Just spent 45 mins reading the thread. Inspired me I went tribal. Lol

I bought an blow gun way back in the beginning. After testing on a dazed rat and seeing how long it lived with 5-6 dart in it (some all the way through) I decided it wasn't humane enough. This was with the "broad tip" darts too.

My fusion may get a little quieter here real soon.

Texted the guy today about 1 asking if we'd be able to meet before he left (if he's really going). HE texted back "yea, I'll text you 5:30-6:00" Unsurprisingly I have not heard from him since.

Last night I ordered a Tim Hill's extended marauder shroud that comes with 11 baffles. Spent 2-3 hours looking for a quality aftermarket barrel but couldn't find one in stock anywhere. This morning I called up Crosman and ordered a barrel, shroud plug, and degassing tool. Already have a o-ring set on the way. It should be here next Wednesday/Thursday. Everything else will be here before then. I asked the guy at crosman if they normally have the .25 barrels in stock. He said he has about 500 in the warehouse right now.

In other awesome news -
My new shroud for the Marauder arrived today along with 13 baffles. Got the gun all back together and making a long story short - IT WORKS!
It is a good bit louder than my stock Amurex Fusion but it packs a lot more wallop too. The fusion penetrates about 5/8" of duct seal at most while the Marauder goes through the whole 1.25"-1.5" and hits the steel backing plates. The marauder also leaves a huge hole compared to the Fusion.
:geekdanc:
Still haven't heard from the guy who sold it to me since Friday. I sent him a text about 10 minutes ago telling him I got it working, what I had to replace, and, "thanks for the decent deal even if it wasn't as good as you advertised Mr. *insert his real name*"
He hasn't replied to that one either.

a bit delayed but that got his attention. About 40 text messages later with him making a few barely veiled threats about having his cop brother shake me down for "spying" on him, and me keeping my cool without antagonizing him, he sends me a picture of the receipt and it claims he will still make good. I halfway believe him. The text conversation ended on a good note.

RE: Rat hunting with air rifles- the actual topic of this thread - I haven't seen any to shoot tonight although I've checked a couple times. I hear them on the other side of the fence next door though. If it were a single house instead of a small low-rise condo unit I might go ask for permission to go in their yard to shoot.

You didn't do anything unlawful. However, if his cop brother runs your plate without any reason, then we've got a problem. With the amount of negative press the HPD has gotten lately, they don't need some punk who thinks he is above everyone else because he has a brother in LE.
-
I know I didn't do anything illegal and if his "my brother is a really great cop" really is great cop then then his brother would tell him I'm not in the wrong. If he does find out my full name I'm not worried about that either unless he escalates after that. I won't give him a reason to want to escalate either. I figure I lose nothing by staying calm and mostly nice. Perhaps he really has been crazy busy with a move and if he knows I'm cool maybe he'll actually pay up. Getting mad and yelling at him over text messages certainly won't do me any good nor shame him into making amends if he is lying.
Haven't heard from him since the last texts I posted. Won't hurt me to give him more time. At this point he'll either do the right thing or he won't. Nothing I can say to him will move him towards the outcome I want.

The rifle would be hidden among a couple dozen amazon orders lol.. and I pay that particular bill. I'll give her a day or two to settle back in . She was away a whole month.
And no, she doesn't know about this particular forum. She just says I spend too much time on the computer.

Come home tonight after work and having dinner out with her. AS we pull into the carport I'm like, "remember that rat nest I found under D's (house in front and also our landlord) house at the carport. I can show you." I park directly in front of the entrance to the den which is under D's house (his house is ~3' up on stilts. Get out of car with headlights on and hae her look through the wood slats at the pile of dirt they've dug out from under the carport slab. she's see's how large it is.. Mention how the one under house house is just as large..
She "Still doing the traps?"
me "some what but they aren't as effective anymore as the rats are getting smarter so I've been shooting them."
she " :o :o What?!"
me "two neighbors were shooting them so I cleared it with D and bought a pellet rifle. He loved the idea and is thinking of getting one too."
her "omg.. what do you do with the bodies??"
me "same thing as trapped if they are on land."
her "the stuff you do when I'm away"
later I had gone out to hunt while she was in the shower. Forgot and left a pellet on a shelf by the patio door - next to the Buddha statue. oops
later " wth hell rob?!. This does NOT belong by Buddha. You'd better start thinking about your karma. What if you come back as a rat?"

I'm sure I haven't heard the end of it but she knows. Think I'll keep it low profile.

Got my super nano grease in yesterday. I spent a couple hours this morning polishing the hammer and bolt areas on the mrod then used some of it. It is a good bit smoother than it was but it's not the warm butter feeling i was hoping for. It's definitely usable now. Now I'm waiting for a ldc. and still need to site in scope. Today I am home while she at work but I have tons of stuff to do other than guns.
anyone have a nightvision or infrared scope they'd like to let me borrow? :D

Oh yea, the last 3 were with the marauder. You don't need a perfect shot to kill quickly with a .25 cal predator pellet. Pretty much hit the rat anywhere and it'll bleed out very quickly. It's a little louder than the fusion but I go inside immediately after the shot.
This evening when I got home I had a package waiting.
It had two LDCs in it. One for each rifle. I want to do my part in helping the environment by not spreading lead dust. Anyway got to do a shot with the marauder. I almost got to test it shooting a rat but it went into the brush too quickly. I settled on just shooting the bank. I've heard LDCs can change how the report sounds. It did sound different but not so sure it affected the volume.
I'll require further measurements of escaped lead dust during daylight hours.

Tonight I shot two within a couple of minutes of each other.
Last night I saw 3 but only had a clear shot at one. It was much further than normal ~15 yards. I missed. Hit low by about 2".
Excuse -err umm, I mean explanation to follow.
When I started using the marauder I took the scope off the fusion and put it on the marauder. I tried to use the "low" mounts from the fusion but was unable to because the circular magazine on the marauder stuck up too high above the breech and the scope wouldn't clear it. I had to use the mounts that came with the marauder. The problem is those are "high" mounts. They put the center of the optics about 2" above the barrel. This may not be a problem when you are zeroed in at 50 yards but it really screws with zeroing the scope at the short ranges I shoot. A 1 yard difference in range can mean a big enough difference in vertical poi to miss a rat. I don't go for head shots with the marauder. I'd miss too easily. Body shots with that slug do the trick anyway.
The scope has mil dots and I've learned how many above or below to aim with at say 4, 6,and 10 yards but if my range estimate is off even little it makes a difference. At the longer range I shot at last night I just guessed which dot to align on. I guessed wrong.
What I need are some mounts that are only s coupe mm taller than the short ones on the fusion. I never had a problem with vertical poi using the short mounts.
Any ideas or lessons anyone want to share with me about how to compensate short of finding new mounts?
Normal open sights would work great IF the maurauder had some. Alas, it doesn't.
-
I had thought about zeroing my scope as if the pellet goes in a straight path "forever" which is basically the very short ranges I shoot at and aiming at a spot that is the distance above where I want to hit as the distance between my scope center and barrel center. I always thought this would work but never heard anyone else talk about it until I found the attached picture. Now I see this may be my best bet.
I will measure the exact distance between the barrel and center scope. Then I will make two dots on the target say 15' to 20' away that are vertically separated by that distance. Then aim for top dot and adjust my scope so that my pellet hits the bottom dot. Once that is done I just aim that distance above where I want to hit from then on.

Of course you realize that your pellet isn't traveling a straight path. I'd be interested to see what happens after you get the scope zeroed as you mention, then try targets at 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of the zero distance. I'd expect that as you get closer, the hits will get higher. Will they move enough to result in a miss? Ah, that's the part I want to see!
You could also range landmarks around your killing field, and learn how many mils above/below zero you need to aim for a bullseye at that range. Rat by the big blue rock? Aim 2.5 mils high! Under the corner of the house? 1 mil low! Etc. Heck, you could put range markers at 1-mil increments!

I suspect at the short ranges I am shooting (usually under 10 yards) that there is little to no drop. I hope to do some testing on Monday.
The other method you mention is too much memorization although that is similar to what I've been doing.
The best solution would be to get some mounts that barely clear the magazine.
I ordered a low profile laser sight from Amazon. I'm hoping to mount it under the barrel with only a 1/2" or so distance from beam to center bore. With that little distance it should be easy to sight it in for hole in hole shots at any close-medium range. Not sure I'm going to be able to get it that close without the LDC getting in the way.

You should listen to Tom, he is good, he is wise.
Your projectile begins to follow a ballistic trajectory within a few feet of leaving the barrel. What this trajectory is will be a function of the projectiles weight and drag coefficient as well as the speed at which it leaves the barrel. Using the same type of pellet all the time will give you a good idea of what these properties are.
Think of your zero as a reference point, at a given distance a pellet of this weight will hit at X aim point. In order to hit y or b you should use the scopes mil dot or moa markings to compensate for the projectiles drop and windage. This will allow you to make faster follow up shots should you miss. Toms range marker idea is a good one, it will allow you to get used to using your scope markings rather than trying to constantly re-zero the scope.
Good luck and keep up the good work! :shaka:

109 as of ~1am this morning.
The hammer strike and air cylinder •ping• seem to be louder then the muzzle report now that I've dialed back the velocity to about 680 fps *happy dance*. The rat screams are sometimes louder than the hammer strike depending on where I hit. With the bolt action and magazine though I can stop any rat noise pretty quick with a follow up shot. God, I hated single shot although that is usually all I needed since that rifle was accurate enough for head shots.
Now I want to spend some money to quieten the hammer and ping. This is as bad as upgrading a computer or car. Once you make one area better it exposes weakness in another area. Upgrade the new area and see a new weak link. Rinse and repeat until no money left.
I'm supposed to be off work tomorrow but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be called in for at least a half day. That's going to cut in on my time to play with zeroing the scope and laser which should arrive tomorrow too. :(
I'm afraid I may need to refill the scuba tank pretty soon too. It wasn't full when I got it and I've refilled the rifle from it quite a few times. I don't have a pressure gauge for the tank but it still filled the rifle to the 2600 I like to put it at. 3000psi is max rifle pressure but that increases the noise level. I guess I could just keep the valve open until the rifle and tank equalized to check tank pressure

I suspect at the short ranges I am shooting (usually under 10 yards) that there is little to no drop. I hope to do some testing on Monday.
I've been thinking about this, and I really want to try a little math here. I think you're right, I'm just curious how right you are.
The hammer strike and air cylinder •ping• seem to be louder then the muzzle report now that I've dialed back the velocity to about 680 fps *happy dance*.
So, 680 fps over 30 feet is a flight time of about 1/22 second, or 0.044 second. Let's plug that into the standard gravity formula, d=(gt^2)/2
Since we're using feet, G=32. t^2 = 0.002. That gives us roughly 0.03ft, multiplied by 12 inches, is 0.37 inch. Let's round that off to 0.4 for giggles.
So, during its brief flight time, that pellet drops 0.4". But it started with an upward velocity, right? Because you sighted the scope in such a way. Applying a little specious logic, we can assume that the pellet rises half that distance, then falls back into place. Around the midpoint, it should print 0.2" high. At the bore and at 10 yards, dead on. Anything farther, the strikes should be descending.
That's really quite nice, less than 1/4" of deviation, even with such a relatively low muzzle velocity!

Thanks for the math! That is quite helpful.
I'm not sure there will be any rising since I'll have the scope and laser aimed parallel with the barrel.
Oh, my woman had some nasal drip the last couple days and this morning she got up feeling like crap. Just left urgent care and turns out she has bronchitis. she will be staying home at least the next couple days so won't be doing the testing.

Finally got a day off to myself and sighted the scope for about 3-4 yards and the laser for about ~7-9 yards.
Was also able to take the OEM factory silencer off the fusion and put on a nice LDC.
After shooting the fusion a bit today for the first time in awhile I gotta say if not for the multi shot and greater knockdown power of the marauder I'd rather use the fusion. The fusion is half the weight (6lbs vs 12lbs), it is considerably quieter, it is more accurate in short ranges, and it's much shorter making it easier to move it around the plants (a big plus where I shoot).
Alas, I could live with the lower FPE because I know for certain it is enough to kill rats but multi-shot is a very nice feature.
Biggest negatives about the marauder is size/weight and the accuracy not great at very close range due to scope sitting ~30 mm higher then the barrel. Speaking of size, the marauder is 57" long with the extended baffle and LDC.
Today I realized I should have just bought a Marauder 22 cal pistol in the very beginning. I would have spent less money for a fairly quiet, much smaller, and plenty FPE gun.
Hmm ... anyone care to buy a fairly quiet .25 cal air rifle that's capable of taking out a pig?
-
I am trying to find a scope mount for 11mm dovetail, 1" tube and the important part - as close to 16mm height as possible without going under. 15 will barely touch the magazine. higher screws up the aim. I've been searching but haven't found. maybe someone here has connections :)

+1 I owe this kill to the laser. looked over the wall and a medium size rat was scurrying along the ledge to his hole. With no time to sight in with the scope I just pointed the laser a little lower than him, *PFFFT* (as opposed to *pfft* with the fusion), and then he was floating in the water.

Turns out I had almost 60,000 of them at 1 penny each. Woot! Almost $600.
So what did I get?

I have put up an ad in the classified subforum. Turns out the suppressor on it won't fit my new pistol so it comes as part of the package (with price bump)
-
+1 last night using the marauder and a red dot. The red dot is much more vertically accurate as it's lower and closer to the barrel
FedEx says my p-rod (marauder pistol) has been delivered. Hope my wife doesn't open the box lol
-
Finally had a day off and got to shoot the new pistol
I put on the stock it came with and my 3x9 bugbuster scope.
Sighted in at 24' with first two clips of 8.
Here are the results of clips 3 and 4.
Pic 1 gun
Pic 2 clip 3
Pic 3 also clip 3
Pic 4 clip 4
I'm very impressed with its accuracy. Not so much with its noise level. I have a LDC being made for it now. Hope to have it by Monday.
Edit:
Also since I was able to mount the scope very low it is easier to be accurate at very close ranges too. Check out the clearancess in the last picture.

Well, my wife flew tithe mainland yesterday to be with her oldest daughter for a week soo had all day to myself. I spent it by driving to Kailua, refilling my scuba tank, and target practicing.
Tonight I was very generous to the rats. Without a woman to tell me to come inside I spent my time delivering lead gifts.
5 of them received my love delivered via my newest toy. My landlord even hung out awhile and got to see two of them swan dive for joy off a ledge and a branch into the river.
Body count:
75 by trap
47 by air powered pellets
Total back to nature: 122

yup! it worked great!
depending on how well the suppressor works I might even sell the fusion.
He is supposed to finish it tomorrow but its the same guy who made my other two and from the time he said 'one more day' it took almost 2 more weeks.
-
+1 tonight. Not much hunting tonight -mostly tested out a bunch (13) of different pellets for accuracy. Bought a variety pack.
Of course the guy who is making the suppressor said he isn't finished yet (shoulda been fedexed out on Friday). "99% sure I 'll finish tomorrow." I'd put money on it that he does NOT finish it tomorrow. The last order was over two weeks late.
-
been awhile since I posted simply because I haven't gotten to hunt much. My woman being home and being all anti-killing puts a big dent into the time I can spend on my 'hobby'.
The silencer came in for the marauder pistol but the pellets were clipping it at the very end. Sent the pistol and silencer to the guy where is is going to make a new silencer, make sure it works great, and tune up the pistol for even better accuracy and silence,
Using the fusion I bagged two rats tonight. One medium and one large. I also got a small one a couple nights ago. They are mostly staying out of my immediate yard (that I know of) but there are lots of them in the neighbors yard. They are still in the river area but at a much lower population than before. The brush along the banks is getting very thick and making it easier for them to hide although that is where I got the two tonight. Wish I could give a short flamethrower burst along the brush to at least kill off some leaves. I'm sure Roundup along the water is a big nono.

Tonight was good for hunting. Got 4.
1 soon after dark, then about 9:15 got another. The second one wasn't a clean shot. It fell to the water and was splashing around a bit. I reloaded and was about to give it another lead enema when I saw another rat had poked it's head out of the bushes to see what the commotion was. *PFFT* Third rat in the water. Dead. clean head shot. Looked around some more and about 30 seconds later saw a third. *pfft* Number 4 for the night was down. Didn't see anymore and by this time the first of the three had died.
Looked around another 5 minutes but didn't see anymore.

That's great!
I read that rats give birth about 21-24 days after getting pregnant. Average litter is 6-13. So ... if you have, say 10 females in the neighbor's yards, and you can kill an average of 8 per week, then:
8 kills per wk * 3 wks = 24 kills every 21 days
10 rats giving birth * 6 babies = 60 new rats every 21 days
I think you have your work cut out!! You need to take 20 per week just to be close to breaking even!!
Hopefully neighbor's traps and some cats are helping you out! :)
-
Oh yea, I know about rat birthrate. I'll have target practice into perpetuity. I do have help though - two other neighbors shoot them also. That was the catalyst for me going ahead and getting an air rifle (or five).
I'll never get rid of them all since each one that dies leaves a neon vacancy sign behind that the ala wai rats can see but it's obvious the numbers have been knocked WAY down in my field of view. Before I started trapping and shooting I'd see 12+ of them in 5 minutes along the stream banks at any time after dark. The neighbor on the makai side of me has an extreme infestation in their yard even today. They have bait stations all around but I've no idea if there is any poison in them. Doesn't seem like it.

might be? Most definitely is. By not using trash cans with lid or even can when they are available. Tonight the trash is near the road. I took a short video when walking the dog. Let me put it on YouTube. I'll post a link in a bit.
Oh yea,

I thermal scope would be perfect. Could easily spotvthem in bushes and grass. Sadly, thermal is $3k plus (yes, I've looked). However there is another not cheap but still much less expensive route. Night vision. Now the good night vision scopes (gen 3) are also many thousands of dollars but there is a guy who builds night vision scoreless setups for rifles and the quality is actually better than gen 3 scopes.

While gen1 prices are within my budget I doubt the picture quality would be good enough for me to pick out rats in the brush and grass. If I decide to have that guy build me one I'll have gen3 quality picture for hi end gen1 or low end gen2 cost. It wouldn't be as pretty a setup as a purpose built scope but it'll work fine.

whew! Finally Anthony Story has mailed my Marauder pistol with the LDC. Advice - if you want an LDC for an airgun and you don't have over a month to wait for it to be built then order it from someone else. He makes good stuff but he never meets his target dates - repeatedly. About 7 times over the last 5 weeks the estimate was "should be able to mail it tomorrow" yet every time 'something' came up to keep him from finishing.
3 day priority mail so should arrive on Tuesday maybe Wednesday.
Now I'll be waiting for my night vision setup.

+1 tonight by the trash heap for the low rise apartments at kapiolani.
Was set up with a tripod and my umarex in the parking lot of the low rise about 15 yards from the trash pile. Had shot a rat 2-3 minutes earlier and was watching for more through the scope. Had a flash light on tight spot beam. While looking through the scope a bicycle comes towards me from the sidewalk by the bus stop close to the trash pile. Since he crossed my line of sight I dipped the barrel towards the ground as he rode casually towards me.
"Hey, what you doing?", says the guy who looked like he could have been on year three of an ongoing lifelong batu binge. Not the kind of guy I'd want for a next door neighbor.
"Killing rats, just got one a couple minutes ago."
"You live here?"
"Couple houses over there"
"You can't be here. Anyone say you could?"
"Nah, didn't figure anyone would mind me taking out rats"
"Well, I don't know if you killing rats or people"
I'm thinking, "really?"
"I don't think this little air gun is gonna kill anyone"
"Don't care. You gotta go before I call the cops"
Although I'm thinking he probably has more to hide from them than than I do I pick up the tripod and fusion and head home. Kinda sucks. Hundreds of rats over there and the guy wants to keep it that way. Else he just like giving the white boy trouble.
I don't even know if he lived there but I don't care for no trouble.
-
you probably were shooting at his "friends"
-
Good thing your air rifle was not one of the AR or tacti-cool look alike models.
I am sure there are a lot of places on the mainland where kids can have fun with those, but if a neighbor saw one in the backyard shooting in Hawaii, or like you were doing................ :shake:
-
Probably good it wasn't my marauder rifle either. It's huge and could really scare someone.
Looking back now, The guys words were "ok" but he said them with some attitude. At least they weren't attitude with cursing and physical threats. If he lives there he was in the right to tell me to leave. He could've been nicer about it though.
I wonder if there are any laws against having trash piled up like that outside of rat proof cans. It really does create Heath and vermin hazards.
Oh yea, new pistol arrived a short while ago. Had it shipped to work since it required a signature. Now I want to go home and play with it.
Doubt it would be a good idea to unpack it here at work.
-
Completely off topic but discovered something pretty dang cool (and a little unsettling) about my neighborhood. It is riddled with caves not far below the surface. Google "moiliili caves". I found it fascinating. There are videos of people checking them out.
-
I dunno man, caves spook me, and that looks too much like it hooks up to a sewer.
-
you've got to go through a sewer to get in the caves. I bet the "KING" rat is down there somewhere.

I know! At this rate I'll have to start feeding them if i want any for my night vision. Or I just may need to zero in at 50 yards and start shooting the ones much further down the stream. The IR light that I'm getting is good to 100+ yards. My aim however is unlikely to be good enough for that distance. The rats are big but not THAT big.
-
Aim small!!

After nearly a week of not seeing any rats from my yard I nailed two of them last night.
My pistol really like the crossman premiers round nose pellets for accuracy but they don't have good kill power. One of the rats took three pellets and was still moving around in the water/weeds. They weren't headshots (it was moving) but the other pellets would've caused massive bleed out. These seemed to punch through with minimal damage.
Been playing around with tuning the power. Under 500 fps it it very quiet. 500-550 pretty quiet, 600+ too loud for late night. 450 fps is about 6 FPE - low end of rat killing power.
-
Today I got tired of the brush hiding the rats so I put on the river waders I ordered from amazon a couple weeks ago, dropped the ladder over the wall, grabbed some heavy duty pruners, grabbed my big empty yard trash can, and entered the stinky stream. The mud and silt were about a foot deep and sucked at my shoes with each step. Stay in one place too long and you might sink up to near your knee. I cleared some of brush and weeds to expose the trail they use and a couple rat nest holes that had been buried.
It was hard very hot work. oh yea, those river waders? Think wearing a 3mil coverall neoprene dive suit. My clothes were soaked when I finished but it wasn't stream water. It was sweat.
I think I may have gotten close to heat stroke. Had a hell of a time hauling the now full trashcan up the ladder (which was about 3' too short ). Finally did after huffin and puffin and balancing.. I rinsed every thing off real well, threw away the old tennis shoes I wore over the suit, took a shower, and now chilling in the man cave with the AC on high.

Just saw an article on KHNL or something news site about the clogged up drainage streams.
Glad you washed up and de-toxed, could be some nasty shit in that water you do not want on your skin or lungs. Who knows what fudgepackers or needle users were upstream?
-
The stream is pretty nasty to walk in even with the waders. As your foot sinks a foot deep into the mud/silt these nasty smelling bubbles would come up.
As far as the small inflamed cut - I taped a gauze on it. The I kept the gauze wet with peroxide for a couple hours. It's been fine since then.
Got a small rat tonight as it went along the now revealed path. I almost didn't want to shoot him. He might have gone told his friends about the new awesome place. My night vision is due to arrive on Monday.
-
Got my night vision system today. One of the forum members delivered it to me.
Imagine that, it was quite trippy when my mailman asked me, "are you the rat Hunter?"
I was a little bit freaked out at first. How did my mailman know I was hunting rats? Were the neighbors talking about it that much?
Nope, it turns out he is one of the forum members on here and I left enough clues that he figured out which house it was. I will leave it up to him if he wants to out himself. I'm sure he will see this post.
The night vision system works extremely well. I can see rat size creatures out to about 60 yards. Unfortunately I've already killed off most of the rats so I haven't seen one tonight. I am going to have to go and check a little bit down the street maybe later tonight. I really wish that one guy had not told me to leave from down by the bus stop because that is where most of the rats are.
It was very easy to sight in and I am able to add lines similar to Mil dots. I can pick any range and add a line. Perfect for me!
Main cross hair is about 9 yards. So far I have made lines for about 6 yards, one about three yards, and one further out to about 15 yards.

Great to hear you are running out of targets near your house. Smoked the rat infestation! You'll have to mercenary out now. Maybe get paid, by neighbors, to cull their infestations! (as long as your neighbors aren't anti-gun or crazy liberals or something like that)
-
Just approach your neighbors and offer to kill rats if they'll let you hang out in their backyard at night!
-
How's about a bait station. Works for bears and deer why not rats. Some peanut butter should work fine.

-
It's been awhile since I made any updates - simply because I haven't been seeing hardly any rats. I think the neighbors must have started poisoning them. Even the infested house next door hardly has any. I shot one the other night - the only one I've gotten a clear shot at since I bought the night vision. I know they are mostly gone because it is so easy to see them (when they are there) now. The nightvision lakes their eyes light up like a reflector hit by headlights.
So I took some pictures. I won't win any photography prizes since I was balancing the gun in one hand and holding the iphone with another. The auto balance and focus on the camera didn't really help either.
The first few are of my rifle with night vision attached. Then a few of the screen using night vision. The target and kale plant are 10 yards away, the sandbags are 65 yards away ( I also bought a laser range finder). The picture on the screen looks MUCH better in person than it does in these pictures. I also unloaded an 8 round magazine at the target for fun. Other than one crazy flier (the pellet probably had a bent skirt) they would have all been lethal shots on a rat.
+1 kill from the other night.

Hmm this was in my mailbox yesterday. Perhaps they'll clean away all the brush too.
-
Wish I could say it's been a slaughter around here (did I really just say that?) since I got the night vision but I've hardly seen a rat much less shot at or killed one recently. Even the house next door that seemed to have millions under it at one time is clean. I think it is coincidence the people there moved out about the same time the rats disappeared or perhaps the landlord did an inspection when the people left and discovered the warren under there. Someone had to have used lots of poisoned bait to get rid of them this completely.
I haven't had a chance to inspect the trash by the bus stop though. That is their source of major food.
other news - the workers came and strengthened *some* of the walls along the stream. Where they worked they cleared the brush but not anywhere else. The far side hardly got anything cleared since my side of the stream got most of the work. There are now 3" wide shelves of concrete about 6 " above the high tide mark for them to run along when they return.
It seems like the unlikely has happened and this thread has run it's course. I didn't think I'd ever be rid of the rats. IF I kill anymore I will definitely post. I still go out most nights checking for them.
Oh yea,
Our newly planted vegetable garden is doing well.

!!!!GAME ON!!!!
:stopjack:
I hadn't seen any rats for well over a week. The city is continuing work on the walls along the bank of the stream and I think they are displacing rats. I heard rats squeaking outside a little while ago so I grabbed my .22 marauder pistol with the night vision and 2 magazines.
Within the next 20 minutes I shot ***7*** of them and saw 2-3 others. The nightvision is great. Without light the rats don't know what's happening so they don't auto run away when you shoot one. My pellet rifle is also very quiet now. The pellet hitting the rat is much louder than the report.
One of the rats scared the crap out of me by running high speed into the side of my foot. I think I screamed like a little girl. I was looking across the stream and had no idea that rat was near me. By the time I gained my composure it had run away.
edit:
Went back out after ~30 minute break and got 3 more! 10 in one night blows away my old record with traps.

Wierd. I must have really caught a migration because I've only seen 1 at my house since the 10. Got that 1 too
The city has completely cleared the bank on both side for 1/2 the area I shoot at now. Looks like they'll be clearing the whole thing eventually as they move along with wall repairs. No where for them to hide except their tunnels now.

Robble ever think of culling mongoose? See um everyday on Westside. Real big problem, see them stalking game birds every day.
See francolins paired up or with chicks, next day or week little guys are gone.
Thanks for taking care of Ala Wai how about Westside? Lol

Little bastards come in my yard all the time, lots of rocks on the lower slope. They never sit still. I would have to have a very good sniper hide and patience to bag one.
Better have the sights on them as soon as they appear.
We have trapped them before when they ate my wife's tree fruit.
-
Mongoose haven't yet given me a reason to hate them. If the rats had not been eating our veggy garden I wouldn't have raged on them either.
-
Slight OT, but is a pellet gun overkill for cane toads? We have a dog and found one tonight. I'd rather not use the machete...

Heck, a good BB gun will take car of toads but a .177 pellet would be more humane. Co2 cartridge type would be plenty. I have a very good one I'm looking to unload. Also looking to sell my .25 but that's be way overkill for toads.

When I was a kid back in the 60's, mongoose hunting was why I got interested in guns.
My grandfather would clean fish and throw the guts out for bait.
I learned a lot of tricks from him for a successful hunt.

+3 tonight. Heard several fighting/playing/fornicating/whatever's. Anyway they were making a lot of noise. Look around with my night vision and there seem to be three or four of them. I shot one and the rest scattered. Little while later I heard them again so I went back out and I got two more. I didn't see any more after that -at least up until now.
-
Just great - get the rats under control and my barely English speaking neighbors appear to have bought about a dozen young chickens which they let free roam. Free roam into my yard causing my dog to go crazy. Not even mentioning all the noise they make. I grew up with chickens so I also know what to expect when the roosters get a little older
I'm sure there are laws against chickens in town but it'd be tough to prove somebody owns them.
Might get more use out of the pellet gun after all.

I have a hard time imagining there are laws protecting feral chickens on your property.

Got feral chickens running in my family's back yard too.
Pilai... roosters, only let hens roam. No nightly or early morning wake up calls.
Love game birds but not at my house...
My daughter when she was young alway wanted one of Macs baby chicks. Used to love and feed chickens at the range.
Lucky got cool neighbors that put up alot... already had a feral pig, & baby goat. Gave little "Billy the Kid" to Henry (WGS). Lol
Bet Billy didn't last too long. Noisy little fella. Looking into buying a Beeman P1 .177 pistol, to many mongoose killing francolins at work.
Robble are P1 any good?

For a mongoose you might want a .22 cal. .177 will kill instant with a well placed head shot but the .22 has much better kill power for lessor shots.

Just walking my dog along the sidewalk by the apartments where the trash pile that is the mothership for the rats in my area us.
Someone from the balcony of one of the units was calling out "hey nice dog". I said "thanks!" and started moving again.
"Hey come" he said as he starts coming down the stairs.
I walk over near the stairs.
"You still got that rifle?"
Uh oh.. This is the guy that got on my case that night.
"Yes"
"Can you come back and shoot the rats? My granddaughter plays down there. I been looking since then and I can't believe there are so many!"
"Yup!"
He then goes on talking with me for 5-10 minutes. Says he sorry he got on my case and he didn't realize the rat problem was as bad as it is. He actually thanked me and shook my hand. He let me know which unit he lives in so I can tell him if I'm gonna be shooting (he wants to watch). He was a much nicer guy today than a few months ago.
AND my wife is going on a few day trip fairly soon so I can hunt at will without her getting upset. I'll probably take some vacation during that time too.

Have you been getting any at the rubbish pile?

If you haven't already, you might read the thread from the beginning when you have 2-3 hours free. I think there are several who'd say its worth your time.
I have a very nice IR night setup - I'd be interested in seeing how it compares to your viper. Which gen is it? I'd want at least gen 2+ but that's a bit out of my price range. At 50 yards or less I'd bet my IR does close to a gen2. What I'd really love is a thermal scope but thats WAY outta budget.
I have 3 pellet rifles - a co2 .177 Umarex that was my main gun for a few months (after having tried a couple of VERY loud break barrel rifles) that is my quietest.
I then got a .25 marauder that is extreme overkill but if I slow it down to under 450fps (still overkill) it's pretty quiet.
Now my main gun is a .22 Marauder pistol with the carbine stock on it. I run it about 500fps and the pellet strike even into rat flesh is louder than the gun itself.
All 3 have professionally built LDCs.
I haven't went to the trash pile yet since given permission. I'll probably wait until my woman goes on her trip in a couple weeks.
And oh yea, the reason I just logged in is to post:

You see those trash cans they are running behind? That be their personal smorgasbord. About 15 section 8 units keep 'em refilled.

We had a rat problem at our house that was building over the past 10 years; my family seems to have inherited the pack-rat gene.
Anyway, picked up some TomCat poison and some cheap poison housing things, and now we are essentially rat free and have been for the past 6 months. Still a few mice and loner rats here and there, but no more scratching in the ceilings or torn up packages anymore.
Only problem is that if they die in an area you frequent and in which you can't find them, the smell will linger for about 2-3 days until the poison finishes drying them out.
Overall, I think an investment for less than $30 ($15 for the trap, $15 for the bait) is well worth wiping out whatever colony has been on this property.
I do believe someone started poisoning then a while back since suddenly the big population disappeared. There was a period of ~3-4 weeks (I could look back through thread to find out exactly how long) where I hardly saw any. They seem to be trickling back into my area now though. I don't want to go the poison route since I don't want to take a chance of someone's dog (especially mine!) eating a poisoned rat carcass.
side note: is there an easy way to multi-quote on here?
-
According to city ordinance, you can only have (2) chickens.
If you want to fix the problem, call the C&C and let them know.
Just like before - they are all gone as suddenly as they showed up. Don't know why.. they didn't have much time to get any bigger from when they arrived.
Calling the county didn't do much to help with the rats other than the guy telling me 'you gotta do what you gotta do' (paraphrased) when when I asked about shooting them. Maybe it was the county that put out the poison a while back. The guy did put me on a list of places for the sole island wide exterminator to visit.

+3 more tonight. 184.
I remember thinking 'wow, getting close to 100' about 100 ago...
Damn, I love this night vision!
(I still lust for a brush vanishing X-ray thermal scope)
I've tried over a dozen different pellets and strangely these are consistently the most accurate. Doesn't seem like they'd be aerodynamic but they fly true. They are actually wad cutters for paper targets but they are just as deadly to rats.
-

I read most of it but went back and read the last few pages and seen your setup looks solid. LDC's are sweet but don't have them for our stuff at this time as our control efforts are for natural resource work. We got the viper system because we were gonna start night ops but that didnt materialize. My business partner has a marauder pistol like yours I have the rifle with scope because we use it for animals we may see while running traps and we use it for dispatching animals as well. For the pigs I have a .45 and .50 cal because some of our contracts restrict the use of firearms.
Looks like you have a game rich environment again according to that video.
This is what we use and IMHO the very best single kill traps although we have had a few rare double's on mongoose. I can guarantee you a rat or anything else for that matter will not get away from one of these. We currently went to all DOC 250's they are pretty loud when the go off though.

Sorry a little off topic... Hoping you'd consider larger vermin too.
Would like to poison mongoose at work. It's sick when you see on average 5 - 7 mongoose just driving in and or leaving work. The problem in Waikele (Kipapa gluch) area is really bad. Mongoose have checked the feral chicken population, don't see any chicks. Targeting doves and other game birds too. Don't want to think of how many game birds are killed. Bird season would be a lot better if there were less mongoose. Wish the state would offer a bounty or give out irradication permits.
Robbie you and your buddies are doing the environment some good. Best poison is always lead... lol
Go gettum... Happy hunting... :shaka:

It's probably a good thing I didn't have a modern high power air rifle as a kid. I did enough damage with a .22 LR (and had more respect for it than I would've for a pellet rifle).
My ammo consumption was kept low by constant lack of funds as a kid. I could have bought 5 pellets for each .22 LR.
-
I hear you! No respect No shooting period! We were taught proper handling and safety at a very early age.
We used to take out the rats at our pig pens, dog kennel's, feed shed's etc and my uncle's piggery as well as the chicken farm. We literally shot rats all night we had and used .22's the sound of the shot scared them but after a certain time and depending where we were we were only allowed the pellets guns.
Being able to have quick follow up shots and not having to pump up the benji's wouldve been sweet. And of course the power, quietness and magazine fed PCP's wouldve decimated the rat population back then lol.
I was able to take out a couple rats with the viper a couple nights ago using my buddies .22 Marauder Pistol w/LDC as you said pellet strike louder then the report.
Keep up the good work brother...Aloha!

Hi Guys,
Most of the sightings are on a public access road. Hate those weasels, got a few pigs running around too. But in Hawaii Mongoose are pretty much top predator in the food chain. Seen a few owls, but they are active at night little chance of killing mongoose pups.
Took out a few, could shoot 3 - 4 in 30 minutes after work.
Used to collect and hang tails till they started stealing and eating their deceased kin. Named a big male Cannibal... RIP...Lol Breed like rats one of Hawaii's worst invasive species.
Because of other wildlife wouldn't use poison. There's no way the land owner would let anyone shoot them on a active access road. Makes me sick seeing them every day... You know forum members don't do any illegal or inappropriate activities. Need a better mouse I mean Mongoose trap...

Hey Hunta,
Could you tell us where did you trap um. Private or government contract? Would be interested in the location. Know our C&C parks are just infested with Mongoose. Funny we even have Mongoose running on tables and by bags during active firing at the range. Don't worry shooters not at rifle or pistol range. Just don't recommend leaving food out. Wonder if fishing is allowed? Second thought bad idea. Lol

Uses larger disposable cO2 cartridges too. Is the Possum trap the size used for mongoose? Can see how your body count can get so high. Just about $110 usd. I think I'll order one.

Talked to my partner and he said you need to contact them because a customs broker is needed. Probably to much a PITA for just one etc.

We arent govt just a private contractor doing natural resouce work mostly for endangered species. Although I was working for the govt when these first came out and they came over and we hosted them. I met those guys in the videos and we are actually helping them develop a better trap. As I mentioned their baits didnt work as well here as in NZ. We are still trying to figure out a better way to promote the bait(s). We were the first in hawaii to use these and its catching on in the natural resource community but it can be better way better in our opinion. To that end we are working on new delivery systems and modifying it to see if we can make it more effective.
Aloha!

Not sure why you need a special customs guy for since I buy stuff direct from the UK and China fairly often *shrug*
Guess I'll keep shooting until rev 2.0 gets but and released in the US.
That type of trap could be perfect over by the bus stop. Last night I saw what must have been about 20 of them all at once by the trash there.
Set one up there so the rat falls into the water instead of being a warning to the others. Hmm. Rev 2.0 need to accept a scuba tank of air for power. 24 kills per co2 cylinder wouldn't last a whole night.

Yeah understood! I know it drives my partner crazy though as he's the rat guy lol Im the pig guy so I just help him out if he needs it. At this point I am unsure of them releasing it in the US, I think they should they'd make money I'm sure.
Yeah in your situation it would need a bigger tank for sure lol...Its pretty loud when it fires it probably get on people's nerve listening to it all night hahaha!

Sounds like the noise is something to be improved upon. Perhaps a valve that releases the pressure from the barrel slowly or some type of silencer. Loud noise would make the rats scatter (besides annoying nearby people)

So my woman has gone to the mainland to visit her daughter for a few days and it's now time to start some serious hunting.
Since I not only have permission to hunt the rats but was actually asked to i decided tonight would be the night.
I filled the two 8 pellet magazines that I have, filled the rifle with air, put in freshly charged batteries into my night vision system and made my way over to the bus stop trash area.
Here is my report. It does not disappoint.
I was a little worried that since trash pick up happens in the morning and the trash had been moved to the curb there might not be may rats by the concrete wall that provides a backdrop for safety. I needn't have worried. As I was setting up the tripod 4 large rats ran within 3-4' of me *yikes!*
The didn't stay still long enough to shoot them but two ran towards the trash area while the other two turned and ran back toward the apartments behind me.
Finished setting up the tripod and unwrapped the pellet gun from the towel I had it wrapped in when I carried it over there. Turned on the night vision and words cannot describe what I saw - so I whipped out my iPhone and videoed a little bit before the slaughter began.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNbwb3nQ2vo
Within the first minute I had hit at least 6 rats with the first magazine. Remember how I said they often stand around stupidly as I pick them off? Well, that seems to only last for a certain number of hits before they start catching on that it's time to RUN!!!
By the time I changed mags all of the ones that had been standing around decided it might be better to leave the area stat. That's ok though because a couple were dumb enough to come back while others were hanging out on the banks of the stream (both sides). I had no problem finding enough targets for the second mag.
When I was out of ammo there were 4 bodies right where they had been hit in the trash area and there were some in the water. Pretty sure I hit at least 11 of them although once they fell in the water they would sink and I couldn't see all the bodies. I imagine some may have managed to crawl back into a burrow or under the bridge to die.
To be conservative I'll say 8 dead although there is likely to be 3 more dead by morning. Possible more were hit but when they jump up a foot into the air and run through the fence or into a burrow I don't necessarily know if they were hit or just scared by a near miss.
Although I had permission to be there I put the 4 bodies in a trash can and left pretty quick. In and out within 5-7 minutes total. with the only signs I had been there being several blood splotches around the concrete. Even those may be gone by morning as an army of cockroaches seemed to be enjoying the fresh blood.

Hey Robble,
Got one of those full autos, used to blast rats stealing bait fishing eastside. Tom's right about power, but seeing BBs spark on blue rock at night and ricochet in the vermin holes is so much fun. Great for making palu with crabs. Lol
Good for blowing feathers off feral chicken's butts roosting over your truck at night too. Gotta teach vermin to behave. Lol
BB gun is OK for myna sized birds. Would only teach your rats to be gun shy. Mongoose forget it. Still thinking about getting a decent pellet gun. Just rather drill bigger critters but you are bad influence. Lol
Keep it up. Happy hunting
:shaka:
Oh yah it's pretty quite don't want to bother fellow fishermen.

I'd be willing to sell my marauder .25. It's overkill for my purposes. should kill anything you'd want to hunt with an air gun. I have it tuned down right now but you can tune it up to pig killing strength.
also is the full auto you mention the same one in the video? have you modded it? The one in the video is modded to 1200 shots per minutes at 900+ fps on those bb's. that guy can really tear something up.

Airsoft isn't meant to be lethal. A cheap springer pellet gun could do it one shot.

I'm certainly having more fun than my wife thinks I should. Actually, she hates me doing it.
+2 to tonight.
I've always had a problem with the tins of pellets being banged around in shipping and messing up a large percentage of the pellets in a tin (besides the pellets not all being perfectly the same from the factory). A skirt that is even bent a tiny bit can throw off accuracy by an inch or more at 10 yards.
So I started hunting for *true* "match grade" pellets. It took a long time to find them but www.anschutznorthamerica.com carries RWS ammo - both pellets and .22 cal bullets.
They were more expensive than the ones I ordered from amazon but at least shipping was cheap. When I got the box that had the tin of pellets I found an extremely good packing job. I haven't found a single bent skirt yet (amazon tins sometimes as bad as 50%). Considering this the pellets are actually cheaper there than at amazon on a per pellet price.amazon. The pellets themselves were obviously high quality too. No die marks or shards of lead hanging off. Regular pellets are not nearly as smooth nor are the weights exactly the same pellet to pellet (these seem to be).
It has done wonders for accuracy. Where before when target shooting I'd usually have at least one "flyer" per 8 count magazine, these nail the same hole over and over. I haven't missed a rat yet since using these pellets.
I suspect their .22 cal bullets are just as high in quality if any of you are looking for primo small caliber ammo.

Went back to clear up any bodies. I shot the closest first then a second came to investigate what was wrong with his fellow rat. He found out. Then the third came to check on the first two. They are lying where they dropped. It was a bit rainy last night so that mighta washed away any blood.
-
Here is the video from last week. I turned off the recorder a couple times while waiting for more rats to appear. I also cut out some dead time (and possibly a kill or two). The date is off by one month. Haven't figured out how to change the date on the recorder yet.
I missed recording a few kills as I had 9 that night and they aren't all in the video. One rat was too close to a car to shoot and another time a rat comes out and I didn't shoot him at that time. I was hoping he would tell the rest that the coast was clear.
Hope to do some more hunting. Between the weather and trash pickup days I haven't been back over there since.

I am not a hunter. I honestly hate killing anything, even a rat or mouse. BTW, rats and mice make great pets. And while it is not for me I support your right to do this. But I have to say I am actually getting some perverse pleasure out of watching you kill rats. And I have to say if given the opportunity I would probably do this as well. I enjoyed the video. Maybe a little too much!
-
I'm actually not much into killing things either. Had the rats not gotten completely out of control and started eating our garden and peeing in the washing machine (not in the basket but everywhere else in there and it STINKS) I wouldn't have gone to war with them. We lived in peace my first year at this house. As it is I go to some expense to try to make their deaths quick. I bought an expensive bolt action rifle (two actually) so if I didn't get a clean kill shot I could follow up quickly with another. I don't like seeing any animal suffer - even the rats. The nightvision system I bought is purely for efficiency. The DVR I bought for the night vision is purely for sharing the hunts with the forum here. Unfortunately I often forget to turn it on for each shot.
However, similar to you, I've developed a perverse pleasure in hunting them. More so than I'd like to admit.
I'll post the video I made last night in a bit.

Last night shooting. About 15 minutes condensed into ~ 3 minutes.
It's amazing how when you shoot one with a silenced weapon other rats go check out the one you just shot. At one point there are 3-4 wanting to check on one I had just shot. If I had been using my large pellet rifle (the .25) I could've gotten at least 2 or maybe even 3 with one shot (penetration with it is incredible). I coulda gotten a couple more if I was quicker with the trigger too.

Were those cockroaches I saw running around with the rats? Or mice? There was something else running around down there. Have you thought about setting traps?

What's up with these assholes going around shooting cars, houses, businesses, and PEOPLE with BB guns?
Already people are asking if they should be banned. They are going to screw stuff up for everyone else.
Those people are already breaking laws. Catch and punish them. If they shot a person take 'em up on attempted murder charges or at least reckless endangerment (yea hard to kill with a BB gun but it's possible - and very possible with a pellet gun).

Pretty good hunt tonight - got 4. There seems to be a new herd of rats moving in as I've seen/heard more than usual lately.
Here is critter #4 from tonight. He was about 7 yards away on same side of stream as me. I saw him sticking his head out of a hole in the wall. Took the shot and it did a tumble forward flip into the water and didn't even spasm. I believe that white area by its ear is where I hit. It's under about a foot of water:

I walked my dog past the trash pile at the neighbors and noticed an old couch was placed by the trash.
From some distance I turned on my small but very bright spotlight and shined it under the couch. All I could see was a mass of moving brown fur and beady eyes. There was a serious rat convention going on under there.
Turned around, went home, lucky wife already asleep, put my gear in my wagon and went back.
Even before I got to the trash. I saw what looked liked a softball size pile of rice on the ground by the fence - right where I set up to shoot at the trash area. Chowing down on the rice must've been 7-9 or so rats. I didn't break out my little tripod, but shot from about 15 yards. I got two before they scattered but then a couple brave but dumb ones came back pretty quickly together. Get one and the other takes off. A minute passes and they aren't returning.
Go setup and check out the situation under the couch. Before I start shooting I start counting. Wasn't easy since they moved a little but I counted 19. Yes, I did get that part on video. Just gotta find time to upload it.
Anyway I had two full magazines of 8 and the one loaded still had 5. I quickly shot those 5 pellets, loaded another mag and emptied it before they had all scattered. However I did end up shooting another 2 rats on the opposite bank before I left.
I lost count of how many I hit. However, I did hit nearly every shot and I fired 21 pellets. I got most on video.

Bought a bb pistol today. It's a semi-auto co2 cartridge with 19 bb magazine. 400 fps. A bit on the low power side but it seems *kinda* accurate at 5 yards which is further than I bought it for (near point blank). In came with a fake silencer. Imagine a silencer canister without any internal holes or baffles. So one tube within another with end caps to keep inner tube centered. It gives me ideas.
In reviews people said they've killed rats with it.

Finally really got to try out the pistol tonight. Too bad it isn't very accurate. I was over by the trash cans and there were probably 30 rats around. I unloaded 19 BBs within about a minute (probably less).
I know I hit at least four or five but I have no idea how much damage was caused to them. Im not going to count any kills although surely some died.
Wish my marauder was smaller and more concealable (and semi-auto would be awesome). BBs just aren't lethal enough for a clean kill - at least not out of this 400fps pistol. Accuracy would be better if the trigger pull wasn't 8-9lbs. :o. I have a red dot and laser on it but I gotta be braced and slowly - very slowly near the final release - pull the trigger to be accurate to a quarter at 10'. Popping off rounds quickly? Not very accurate. Had a lot of targets in a small area for a few moments though.
-
+2 last night. one by my house with marauder, 1 by trash with pistol. Did I mention accuracy on the pistol sucks? I may take the stock of my Marauder and put it back into long barrel pistol configuration.
I also think someone has put out poison near my house again. I'm seeing rats only once every 2-3 days. My dog found a dead rat next to the fence. It looked like it was trying to dig a hole just before it died. No visible wounds. There is also a lingering smell of dead rat hanging around (which didn't happen from me shooting one),
Anyway body count 338.

Hah.. cool thread. I use my airgun for rats too.. But (thankfully) I don't encounter many rats at my place.
-
Plastic netting around the house acted kinda like a gill net on a pretty big rat today.
It had been trying to get free for hours judging by its bloody back feet.
Ironically, when I shot it, it died instantly, the body relaxed, and it slid right out of the mesh by gravity only.
-
Not much has happened over the last week. At this point I am pretty sure someone is using poison again. Seems like every 23 days I can smell a dead rat somewhere near the side of the house that's closest to the rat infested neighbor.
I'm also hardly seeing any rats now even though every night. I got one last night and one tonight but that is all for the whole last week.

+1 last night. He was actually in transit mode on opposite bank. Saw him kinda far down moving quickly along the waterline and weeds. Lost sight of him a couple times but sort of across from me was about 2' of weed free bank. I got him as he ran across that part.
Also,
Someone has put some sticky traps out by the bus stop.
Effective but inhumane. I wouldn't use them except as a last resort (that and poison).

I quite agree. I'm going to de-stock my marauder and use a shorter barrel extension. It'll be more portable without being so noticeable.

There's probably one or two I forgot to log but did get one last night by my house.

EXCELLENT ADVENTURE STORY!!!
I finally got thru the whole 23 pages of post. Awesome shooting Robble! :shaka: Wish I were there to be your wingman. I shoot iguanas here in Key Largo Florida. They are invasive exotics that are damaging a lot of native plants (vegan critters). But they are quite tasty, so we grill them. Wouldn't do that with your rats though. I shoot a .25 cal Marauder - love the accuracy - killed two out at 41 yards two days ago. Keep up the good work with vermin control!
-
If rats were tasty I don't think we'd have a rat population problem lol.
I've gone back and read through the whole thread myself not too long ago. Took quite a while to read the whole thing It's amazing how it has turned out and how many I've gotten.

+1 catching kid throwing bag of trash in stream.
I was out last night on my patio hunting. Since I use night vision my porch light was off and it was pretty dark on my porch. All of a sudden I heard a very loud splash and was like "the hell is that?" I look upstream where I heard the splash towards my next-door neighbor on that side. These people moved in just a couple weeks ago. There was a boy probably about 14-15 years old wearing only shorts and slippers standing on the porch looking into the stream. I turned on my white flashlight to see made to splash and there was a large white kitchen trash bag right there that the kid obviously threw in. The startled kid looked towards me ( it appears he did not know I was standing outside).
I looked right at him and in a very loud voice just said, "REALLY???!" He look stunned. "I know I did not just see you throw that bag of trash in there" ( I actually didn't see but it made him think I did). Then I turned and went into the house. He must have gotten scared and fished it out while I was in the house getting a string with some fishhooks to fish it out myself because when I came back out a few minutes later his porch light was off and the bag was gone (it didn't float away). Maybe he thought I was going to call the cops on him .

that's why we have stupid "common sense" laws because people are too lazy to do the right thing. There's likely a few laws that the kid broke....but that didn't stop him....see where I'm going ---->>>>

+2 night before last by my house. Also saw a couple that I didn't have time to draw a bead on before they deep into the brush,
Unfortunately last night when I went to get my pellet gun the hook I hang it on from the hollow stock had pulled through the plywood it was screwed into and dropped it straight down about 3 feet straight down onto the ldc/shroud/barrel bending them slightly. I tried straightening by hand but was unable to do so. I didn't even try to shoot it with the ldc on because I know the pellet would have clipped it. took the ldc and shroud off and could see the barrel was also bent a tiny bit as well. tried a few shots with the naked barrel and the poi had shifted about 3/4" at 10 yards. The grouping wasn't very good either. (plus super loud with neither shroud nor ldc).
I've already ordered an upgraded hammer forged barrel that is guaranteed to be accurate to 1moa at 40yards (using their recommended pellets and tuned to 700fps) and a new ldc. I went to order a new shroud from Crossman but they are on the east coast and closed at 4:30 so will have to do that tomorrow. Unfortunately, they do not have an online ordering system set up.
I don't think the breech was damaged where the barrel attaches but I might order a new one anyway depending on it's price. I've found Crossman is very reasonable on replacement parts costs so it'll be good insurance. Pricing example - Crossman stock barrel is $25 vs $150 for the aftermarket hammer forged barrel (ok ok, so there may be a slight difference in quality). Luckily the night vision system wasn't damaged at all.
I'll also be getting a stronger hook system.
It may be a while before I get all the replacement parts in so I hope the population doesn't explode in the meantime - but if it does I guess that just means more targets. I've made some wire mesh covers for my raised bed garden to try to keep them out of the lettuce etc.
.
I saw about 9 of them at once last night by the bus stop while walking the dog so they are strong at their base camp again.
Total count 345.

Not while my woman is home (which is every night). She doesn't even like it that I kill them since she is semi-Buddhist.. She surely wouldn't like a pellet beer party. Now next time she goes to the mainland to visit her daughter on the other hand......
Or you can always check out the area by the bus stop. It's usually a rat rich area starting right about sundown until very late night.

+2 tonight using my .177 with scope and flashlight.
You gotta be quick on the trigger when using a white light. They don't just hang around like they do when you are using night vision. But man, is the .177 QUIET - the .22 is quiet but not like this. Too bad it is single shot. 650 fps and it really is the proverbial mouse fart. Still waiting on new barrel and shroud for the .22

OooOo pretty! I love the look. Is it quiet?
-
Yep its quiet, its .25 cal and fired on its lower settings (i usualy go around a 5) is almost silent, i would say about as loud as opening a can of soda. its not a crack but more a pfft. even on its higher settings i wouldent say its much louder
-
i sold me .25 marauder a couple months ago. It was just WAAAY too overkill for rats. It was also big, heavy, and louder than my .22.
My new .22 marmot militia hammer forged barrel arrives tomorrow. Crosman didn't give me a tracking number or even a shipping confirmation for the shroud so I'm just hoping it arrives quickly.
Got the new LDC last week Monday.

My whole barrel is a suppressor and with the adjustable valve i can set the power for range and prey, Kind of pricey tho
-
Woot! My new barrel and shroud arrived about 12 hours ago.
Did a quick cleaning on the barrel, sighted it in, and did a 5 shot group at 10 yards.
This is the target (please forgive the huge size of the pics):

However, shooting paper isn't what I spent my money for.

I shot at a basketball down by the bridge from my porch and hit it first shot so i know i have the range without turning up the power (about 70 yards). I'll have to go for a can in the daytime to see if i have the accuracy since a rat is a bit smaller than that.

+2. By my patio. 369
There are way fewer rats right now. Even by the bus stop i didn't see any large ones although i saw about 8 babies going into the lava rock wall assured the stream there. Im seeing some of those rat poison bait boxes around.
Sadly even with the brush gone i can't see the bank where they hang out from my patio because a section of the fence is pushed out towards the stream blocking my view.

The "mothership" aka the trash pile near the bus stop is as infested as ever. However, I'm reluctant to go over there now since that guy moved. Also they usually have some type of bulk trash and a car parked there now that would block my line of sight.

Even though I have had a bit of fun and I learned a lot about air rifles along the way, the job is Way Beyond me right now. ( well maybe not be if it were legal to shoot them there and I had full permission from the people living there but neither is the case). Even if the rats were poisoned they will never be gotten rid of completely without the people living in that apartment changing their habits. That also goes for the people who live in the house next to the apartments that put out trash without trash cans with lids. That's something I can't do anything about myself either.
Those rats are also creating a specific problem that most people seem unaware of. They are voracios burrowers. There must be hundreds of tunnels they are digging both under the parking lot and along the walls lining the stream. The parking lot has already been repaired once due to collapsing into the rat tunnels. I'm sure they are undermining (literally) the stability of the stream retaining walls. Several portions of the wall had to be reinforced about a year ago due to falling over. Who knows how much the city had to pay for that.
I have lots of rat hunting videos on my channel but they are set to private - you can't see them without knowing the link, most of which are posted throughout this thread.
On a lighter note - i love listening to slack key but i don't play at all. I took that ledward video several years ago at a slack key festival i'd love to goto again.

Hi Robert, I'm a reporter with KHON. We contacted the city about the rat video you posted over on Kapiolani Blvd and good news! A violation notice was issued to the property this morning. We are running a story on this today for our 5 and 6:00 newscasts. Do we have your permission to use your video of the rats that you posted to YouTube? Feel free to contact me at 808-368-2958. Thank you!

As long as the river is there it'll never be completely solved. Also the reporter got back to me. They didn't run the story because they didn't have my permission to use the video. She is going to interview me at work tomorrow and likely run the story tomorrow night if there are no terrorist attacks etc.
Of course I'll update this thread right after the interview.
(not sure I want to be on TV so the residents of the apartment know who narked on them)

All the city has to do is allow air rifles in public by the stream, give a 25 cent bounty, then rats will be an endangered species.

This morning my dog found a dead rat and a dying rat on my side of the fence bordering my house and the neighbors house. Pretty sure they had been poisoned. No physical damage present (until I put a pellet into the dying ones head - I am not counting that for my BC).
I hope I don't get over run with dying rats playing easter egg. They stink pretty bad when decomposing. At least my dog has no interest in eating them (although she has interest in finding them).

My dog sniffed out another poisoned rat this morning next to the fence. Luckily she's just sniffing and not trying to bite or pick it up. I'm glad she's finding them though. They stink pretty foul once they start rotting.

Story will continue as long as there are rats or until I move. I doubt that rats are ever completely gone. It just may be a while in between kills so not many updates. It was kinda like that already before I posted the vids and someone put it on facebook after which the media picked up on it.

This is how it looks this morning.
Quite the improvement. Notice the poison box too.

They seem to be mostly gone although I still hear them every now and then.
Before my German Shepherd I had two Jack Russell Terriers. They would've wreaked hell on the rats.

+4 very young rats. Evidently there was a litter born pretty recently and they live under the sidewalk in my yard. I saw one dart into a hole at the edge of the sidewalk. They are starting to venture out during the day. Found 4 of them in the flower bed within about 30 minutes. .22 cal pellet does a lot more damage to small rats than big ones.

no more rat hunts?
Nope, rats all left once the trash got cleaned up. I didn't see or hear any for the last several months I lived there. A couple months ago I moved to Washington state. My wife retired and we wanted a large piece of property in the country. Couldn't afford that in Hawaii. We ended up with a large piece of forest with a ~1.5 acre clearing cut out of it - which is where the house is. Our driveway is 3/4 mile long. I'll try post some pics but I'm so far out in the boonies I have to have satellite internet now and the upload is god awful slow.
The critters causing me headaches now are moles and gophers. Remember that ~1.5 acre clearing? It's mostly grass that has to be mowed. The moles/gophers are leaving large mounds of dirt all over that the riding mower hates. Since they stay underground I can't shoot them. I've tried car exhaust gassing them but that didn't work. I'll have to see about traps.
Also noticed it's exactly one year since I last posted.

Here are some photos. We actually had snow a couple weeks ago. Right now it's about 30 degrees outside.

Probably more appropriate to this forum, we have lots of wildlife for hunters. Deer, bear, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, Bald Eagles (don't shoot those!), coyotes, - these are just the ones that have been seen in the yard (previous owners said they've seen bears & coyotes - I've seen the others).

WOW! THat's a beautiful property! I wonder if I sell my home here can I afford to get something similar on the mainland?
-
Nope, rats all left once the trash got cleaned up.
Get a cat and bury the poop into the mole holes. They hate that.
I grew up in Whatcom county and my neighbor got his shotgun confiscated by the Game Warden after he caught us shooting at birds in the back woods.
Doesn't look like trees are near your house which is good during a wind storm. Still, get a hefty generator. It could take weeks to get your power back when it knocks out the power poles.

Thank you! I love living in forest area.
Yes, you could certainly buy a much larger place for half the cost of your Hawaii home. Ours is 5 acres and was well under 350k.
7 miles from the big shopping centers. Feels super remote but actually isn't.

All good advice
I may have to try the cat poop lol.
There are a few trees that could reach the house if they feel over -a couple 130' fir trees come to mind. Not going to chop them down though. Too beautiful.
There are several birch trees in the forest that fell over during the last wind storm. No where near the house but falling trees is a danger for sure.
We have a 7Kw generator. Already used it when a tree feel across a power line nearby.

Yep, get used to it. Whatcom County chopped off the nearby trees to about 10' for all nearby trees and didn't have power problems for at least ten years. Very expensive though...
Be sure to check your property insurance for what happens if they hit the house, especially if any of the 130' are on the neighbors property. Mom had a huge fight with the neighbor and the insurance company over that.
what area of Washington?
I'm guessing Belfair. Doesn't look Rentonish...

what area of Washington?
Kitsap Peninsula between Bremerton and Gig Harbor.

I figured the gov't ran him out of the state for doing their job -- getting rid of pests.
Either that, or they were protecting the rats out of professional courtesy! :geekdanc:

We had quite the little infestation this winter, but poison and some friendly ferals helped cut the numbers down. One day I was cleaning the bird cages and saw this fat mama full of vermin seed munching away on spilled feed so i quietly grabbed the .177 pistol and took care of business. After that nothing. It was very lucky to spot her just before she gave birth and started the whole thing all over again.

i hate to see those things
