Title: What is your choice in self defense ammo
Post by: Kingkeoni on June 29, 2011, 05:16:28 PM
What do you have in your gun?

What caliber?

What brand and type?

And why?

I use Speer Gold Dot 40S&W 165 grain.

This is what I use in my carry pistol and what is loaded in the HD pistol as well.

And why?

What is the reasons for using a particular ammo (brand/ nose profile)?  Best stopping, best velocity, best accuracy, cheapest you could find at the time... ;)

I am interested.

My choice in ammunition is based on stopping power, reliability in my firearms and accuracy in my firearms.

The Gold dots work exceptionally well for me and I've never had any problems whatsoever with them.

^^Cool.

I only have a Colt 1911 at this time, I use Remington Golden Sabers in 185 grain .45 ACP.  It has been one of the only SD ammo that I could find that feeds reliably in my old gun.
Which gun store has the best selection of SD ammo on Oahu?  Seems like it is hard to find a good selection, but I haven't really looked around for a while...

Other than SD, I use regular 230 grain ball, or handloaded 200 grain SWC's for plinking and practice.

I gotta get me one of those newfangled plastic pistols everyone raves about..
I want a glock, the ak47 of pistolaz..  ;D when the budget allows.
That way I can throw any old flying ashtray in it and not have to worry about it...

Heavies, Hornady just came out with a Critical Defense HP round with a polymer tip inside the hollow point.  The polymer tip is supposed to help feeding problems among other things

9 mm hollow point Winchester Rangers
12 ga. 00 buckshot Winchester Rangers

9 mm is the only caliber handgun I own at the moment. Carter recommended the Rangers to me. The 00 buckshot was given to me from a friend of mine. They happened to be Rangers as well which I thought was cool. I have matching SD ammo  :P

#4 buck so it has plenty of energy transfer and hopefully doesn't go through the singlewall construction and take out my housemates and neighbors. have 00 and a couple slugs riding in the side saddle just in case extra penetration or distance is needed

Gold Dots 124 gr

Also have some 147 gr, but primary is the 124 gr.

For 22lr, I would pick the heaviest and highest velocity I could find. I know that lead headed cheap Federal Champion doesn't run well in my M&P 22, so I would avoid. Seems like CCI MiniMags run best and Federal HP.

Cheapest hunting ammo I can find.  :( The 45 gets 230RN hardball. (The round, not the forum member.  :shaka: )

I feed my guns home cast lead for the most part when I am target shooting but was advised to keep commercially made ammo in them for HD. Less likely to be accused of making "killer bullets" that way, even though the hunting loads (HP's, JSP's, etc) are WAY more killer than anything I cast and load.

Reminds me that I gotta buy a box of something - buckshot, maybe - to keep in the shotty.
