as a branch off of my thread about ccw, i was thinking about having to pick up ammo on trips to the mainland
since we are limited in the amount we can put on the plane, i was wondering what round counts in specific calibers add up to 11 pounds?
-
If I recall correctly, I believe that's about 400 rounds of 5.56/.223.
When I flew on United, they weren't that strict on the weight. I'm pretty sure my last trip I had more than 11 pounds of 9 mm. As long as my bag was under the limit, it didn't seem to matter. In one trip, the United agent didn't even make me open the gun bag to inspect the guns. I have a gun bag within a Pelican case and they only made me open the Pelican case enough to place the tag.
Here's what I found online when I was doing research. Like you, I was going to bring back ammo on the way back.

Hey Mac.
When I came back, I got 5 boxes of Magtech .38 Spcl (250 rnds) and 2 boxes ( 50 rnds) of Hornandy SD in my luggage.
10.6 lbs.
Packaging adds weight so go bulk pak if can

Bulk packing isn't an option, if you mean loose rounds.
Airlines require the original manufacturer's packaging with dividers or a commercial box that keeps the rounds separated.

BTW, that restriction makes little sense for .22 (except for CCI Mini Mags), shot shells, and any other ammo that the makers don't sell with dividers keeping the rounds separated.

Last time I flew in from mainland I had close to 20lb and nobody checked.

Airlines have different policies. Alaska allows up to 50 lbs, or at least they used to.

it's only alaska airline they applied for a waiver.
ThE FAA does not really care how much you bring (within reason) however , IATA allows only 11lbs , applies to all member airlines

it's not against any US laws, its just IATA policy.

Which weighs more?
Eleven pounds of .45ACP ammo, or eleven pounds of feathers?

11 pound limit sucks. Used to do a lot of bird hunting on big island.
11 pounds ain't a lot when you bring ammo for family too.
Really miss Super Ferry, that was the best gig. Load up trucks with everything and the crew we're out there.
Now best to call XXG and have Bro drop ship your ammo.
Us muzzleloaders who hunt neighbor islands know how fun it is to send powder over too.
