I was browsing around the internet...it's been a while since I acquired a long gun.
In preparation of acquiring one, I went to HPD to renew my long gun permit. The line wasn't so bad, but I still waited about an hour with at least a dozen or so people in front of me.
While browsing...I came across this handy flowchart that someone from the Hawaiinewsreporter posted...thought it would be a quick study for those new to registering guns here on Oahu.
I'm sure it's nothing new to most on this site...but everyone has to start sometime...

That's the chart for legal buyers. The criminal flowchart is much simpler I gather, want gun get gun no permit or wait periods or other restrictions.

how easy you think it is to find an illegal unregistered gun? not one you borrow from a legal owner. i know some of you in the gun scene it may be easy but for a non firearm enthusiast. lets say you want to start a crime life how do you find a gun to buy. go waianae and shout out you like buy? i thinks its a lot harder than people think unless you were raised that scene and guns were passed on.

There are two categories of unregistered guns in Hawaii: legal and illegal.
Anyone grandfathered before the 1994 registration requirement may have legally owned, unregistered guns.
The illegal ones can be from a wide range of sources.
Both types have a common denominator: neither one is registered making both untraceable to the owner. However, detectives are good at starting from the last known owner (retailer) and working their way to the next owner, and the next.

One way we hear about to be wary of is being watched and followed from the range (or shop for that matter). Then house gets broken in to. Voila, guns, the crim no care if registered or not.

Super flow chart! One thing I don't agree with.... Keeping a copy of permit and registration in the gun bag/case. Why? There is too much personal information on these forms, now if a thief steals that stuff you could be doubly screwed.
Man it make me cringe, all the hoops...

I suggest blacking out the pertinent information on a copy of the registration, then making another copy of it again.
Things I suggest blacking out are residence address, DOB, age, place of birth, SSN and signature.

But what is the purpose of carrying the regis around with the gun? You already jumped through all the useless hoops to get it registered, and there is no requirement to have it with you. carrying it around seems more likely to cause problems, than serve a useful purpose.
I do carry my rifle permit around, on my person, but that is so if I come across an 'impulse buy' I'm ready. Lol ;D

I don't know why I put a copy of my registration with my firearms. The only reason I can think of is that it is a document readily available to show that I am the registered and lawful owner of the firearm. Yes, perhaps there's really no good reason to do this... I can't think of any other good reason for doing so.

Absolutely no reason to keep a copy of anything with the firearm , unless it's an NFA item.
HRS has no provisions to prove to anyone whether or not the firearm is registered!
With NFA item I'll just keep a copy of the stamp in a side pocket. Just because of the rarity in Hawaii.

No probable cause its Illegal , just refuse
however most just voulenteerly submit.

Is there any reason that I, as an NRA certified Pistol Instructor, can't provide Affidavits for a couple of friends while visiting in preparation for moving over there as long as we review all the Law requirements as well as the safety and range time?
Sadly, It would probably be easier for me to just do and out of state Hunter's safety for them.
