Title: Suggestions for improving this site
Post by: 2aHawaii on August 09, 2009, 07:56:23 PM
Hey guys,
I am very open to suggestions and would love to hear from you about what I could do to improve this site.

Might I suggest that the forum icons (currently files and shields) be changed to something a little more firearm related?  Right now the forums looks a little neutral and bland.  When I first clicked the link here, I wasn't sure what it was so I just closed the window.  I think other potential members might do the same.

It could be something simple like little crosshair icons, or bullets, or gun sillouettes-- just something to make it look more like a firearm forum.

Also the banner logo at the top (while being very cool) could use something firearm related in it, just so people know right away what this forum is about.

Just my thoughts.

Great ideas.  I'll try and work on some customizations when I have time.

Lovin' the new icons 2a.  Now it's starting to really look like a firearm forum.

I suggest a section for first aid information. I think it should be called, "First Aid". :D
Maybe it could go right under the prepareness section or between tactics and preparedness.

Thank you!

I might be a little off the mark but I was thinking maybe a section for classifieds that don't have to do with guns? Reason being is I'm trying to sell my 1970 Toyota Corona so I could use the money to buy a customized Saiga12. Did I just do a sneeky dry run?    ::)

Why don't you just start a "For sale or trade" thread to keep it within the rules

Still thinking about the chat and the first aid section right now. For now, just stick the first aid info under preparedness. I think that term covers it pretty well.

I make a motion for a general classifieds area, a Reloading area, and a First Aid area.

Anyone willing to second this?!

How about a "buyer/seller feedback" forum, where people can review the various buyers or sellers they've done business with via the forums.  It's a good way to give frequent sellers credibility, or ensure bad sellers are known to others.

This forum IMHO, desperately needs a "SHOUT BOX" on the front page.  That way members can leave messages without having to start/reply to a thread.

I'd like to shout out "Old Guy, where are you?"

A shoutbox would be pretty cool. I always see it on Sniper's Hide forums. It's an interesting thingy!

2aHawaii, I'm new to the site and am loving it so far! The one thing that's been killin me is in the firearm classifieds section. It seems that there are quite a few posts where the gun(s) have already been sold...but the post is still up. So, you see a post, get all excited, scroll through 1-2 pages of replies/comments just to see it's sold....it can be quite a heart breaker...lol!!  Is there anyway to make it easier for the poster to delete the bulletin, or to report it to the moderator so it can be removed? Maybe a "report as sold" button that would notify the proper moderator to remove the post? Just a thought, otherwise the site is killa and a lot of fun to use!

Okay, I've enabled it so people can lock their own topics in the Classifieds and hopefully people will start doing so. I hope that will help people find items easier.

Voodu, I'll have to look into making the site mobile friendly.

Maybe we could make a rule that the poster of an ad can change the title to put the word "sold" in the title when the items are sold.
Title: Re: Suggestions for improving this site
Post by: Kingkeoni on September 19, 2011, 07:49:28 AM
I really wish they couldn't erase the entire post.

You go to see what was there and It just says sold, because they erased the description and price.

I wish classifieds couldn't be modified.

You should be able to only update them.

And the sold status should lock the topic somehow. Maybe it would show as a different color when sold.

Tapatalk works really well on the iOS device.  Another reason I use it is because when I try to view the forum using the IOS Safari browser, it keeps popping up about the Tapatalk mobile app on the IPhone/iPad.  :)

Just a thought... I don't want to sound like I'm shooting a good idea down, but for selling non-related stuff, you'll probably get more eyeballs/looks/offers at Craigslist.

How about a training section for sharing training vids and reading, or for announcing classes, fun shoots, etc?

[edit] Or perhaps an Event or Calendar section would be a better catch-all for calendar type announcements.

Just hit the quote button on each post and it gets loaded in the quick reply box.

-or-

From the reply screen, scroll down to the selected post and hit "insert quote"

If you're in 1 thread you can keep hitting insert quote or quote as 2A said.
It'll add as many quotes as you want.

If you're transferring a quote from 1 thread to another or want to add a quote past the screen limitations for number of posts:
Open a new tab with the post you want to quote
hit quote ( top right corner )
Copy and paste the quote in reply (reply comes up automatically when you hit quote) into your reply in the other thread.
Just make sure to include the
Quote
symbols in the copy and paste.

KK might have an easier way.

I have this on one of my forums. I suggest it either be a paid for system or require the person to send a copy of their DL to the Admin with the number blacked out. Or what I finally did is to require the poster to have at least 100 (or 500 or 750 etc.) posts under their belt prior to being allowed in. The reason I went with a certain number of posts is that if Knudsen or someone we don't want to have access to that room was willing to pay the price of admission then he would have access. I tried the paid for system and got people in I didn't want. I then tried the DL system and most people don't want to send a stranger their DL. But the required number of posts system will give everyone a chance to get to know the poster prior to letting them join. And even if they make the required number of posts the Admins can still deny access.

Just a suggestion.

One other suggestion...

1. Reach out to all the firearm-related clubs and identify a moderator for their group.
2. Create a private forum for their club that their moderator has admin access to.
3. Ask them to have their members sign up on 2ahawaii and the moderator can give them access to their private club board.

This will bring all the firearm-related clubs on 2ahawaii and improve everyone's communication ability overall.  Legislative session is coming up and we need to be better coordinated for those anti-2a jerks / bills.

What do you think?

A search function that gives you the flexibility of setting parameters like:

1)  searching in subjects, text or both;
2)  postings by dates (i.e., last day, week, month, year, etc.)
3)  by author;
4)  containing all or part of the words in the search string; and
5)  boolean search capabilities (and, or , not)

I have a suggestion.

The site should automatically post when a forum member changes their name.

Most members won't care because they're just changing their name to something cooler or a better thought out name.

I do believe though that it will stop trolls and spammers from reincarnating themselves over and over and causing problems on the site.

There are a couple of people that have changed their names at least once after they pissed off 93% of the forum members.

Then once their reincarnated profile became a nuisance again, they simply hid their identity with a name change.

I do believe though that it will stop trolls and spammers from reincarnating themselves over and over and causing problems on the site.

There are a couple of people that have changed their names at least once after they pissed off 93% of the forum members.

Then once their reincarnated profile became a nuisance again, they simply hid their identity with a name change.
good idea kK ... maybe noted with asterick on main screen then in profile give a * aka previously how ever many person they were. Should help deter mischief

I am surprised that a forum member can change their own user name.

This might not be the correct thread for this question, is the forum running the latest version of the Tapatalk plug in? If it's not the latest updating that would improve the user interface for folks who access the forum via Tapatalk.

People can not normally change their username, only under certain circumstances and with admin approval.

Tapatalk has also been updated to the latest version.

Thanks guys!

I want an All Unread Topics above the Unread Posts link. Right now I have to click on Unread Posts to get to the All Unread Topics link. Sometimes I want to read everything new on this site.

How about a reminder to people to lock their classified thread after an item is sold. Some people write in "please delete" - obviously they don't know how to lock the thread. Most, it seems, just don't lock it. I know you cannot scour every note for a "sold" post to remind them one at a time.

Maybe making something more noticeable when they first create the thread - a big, bold note showing them how to do it? Maybe there would be a way to PM anyone with an open classified ad every few weeks to remind them it's open and to close if the item sold? Not sure if that's tough to do or not. Just some ideas.

I think "For Sale" ads should be deleted after 6 months.

I also think posting pictures of what you're selling should be mandatory.

Most of the unsold stuff is because no one can see what they're buying.

*Mandatory pictures and 6 month limit on for sale ads.

I want to be able to lock the posts in the Deals and Sales section. I don't want to click on each one only to find out the sales expired.

Also add a Like button so we can like their post instead of quoting them and typing +1.

It's not there if you use the original forum layout.   From what I seen there are about 34 of us that use that layout.  Is it possible to add the "like" button to the original forum layout?  Also, what do you guys think about a "dislike" button?

I'm up for it, but someone might get their feelings hurt.

Maybe it will help some understand if people generally agree or disagree with their views on debatable topics.

On a side note, I was looking at your sweet ass glock you posted a pic of and I was thinking "I wish there was a like button" and then I found this thread.

If there was a thanks button I would use it. I primarily interface with the forum via Tapatalk and I am not seeing the like functionality there either.

I can't add the button to tapatalk without modifying their code. I did add it to the original theme though. That one slipped through.

Thanks for all the input guys.

We used to have something similar this before, however certain users would get into "dislike" wars, in that they would intentionally down rate each others posts regardless of what was posted, this became an issue.  That is why it was discontinued.

I understand what you are saying. we moderate fairly, I believe.  Some do bully, but mostly debate.  If things turn into sh*t slinging matches, with no valid arguments being presented, we generally lock up the topic.  If people feel strongly about a subject and can argue their point, we can respect opinions. (we even had anti-gun folks here, their views were seen and as long as the debate was sane and valid points argued, everyone is allowed to voice)  However, if the points make no sense, trolling persists with no valid argument, and personal attacks ensue, well there is no point in that.

perfect example, sh*t right above you.

You misunderstand.  When I see someone say what "the people" (to paraphrase your term) want, expect, need, etc, I have to wonder how the person saying this knows what all the people feel.

I believe you should be honest enough to express your opinions as your own and not try to increase their weight by saying a bunch of people you can't name hold the same opinions.

Just trying to keep the discussion honest and the overly dramatic generalities to a minimum ...    If you had used "I" in place of "peeps", I would have never commented.

nah man that sh*t dont bother me none. i can handle my sh*t. its an example of what goes around here. thats why is suggested to make the like button anonymous so peeps dont get feelings hurt and get pissed off. too much vendetta from the "clicks" after someone dont like what someone posted.

How about some "page forward/page back arrow" buttons placed couple spaces away from the last page number. Or space the page numbers farther apart.

If someone is disparaging your ad posts, please report it and one of us mods will delete it for you.
