I am getting near the 100 rifles mark (not including the handful of pistols) but don't have enough space to store everything.
Finding any safe large enough to house over 40-50 firearms is unheard of.
One idea is to get a vault door and convert a small closet into a safe. This is done by taking down the dry wall and welding sheet steel into a box.

I've seen a gun room built from a basement area where they used to only reload. They added a steel door, fire resistant wall board, wire mesh between the wall board for difficulty breaking though, and two alarm systems. Motion sensors on the outside wall areas tied to the main house alarm, and a separate alarm for the door and interior motion sensors that is only off when they need to be in the room.
In the military, some of our stuff required a safe which meets government standards for time to break in, etc. In lieu of that, we could have an alarmed space that's monitored 24/7 by security.
Something to look into if trying to fabricate a panic room isn't in the budget!

Quicker and more cost effective is to pour concrete instead of using steel, but depends on how much protection you want - i.e., we talking 1/2" high strength steel or 14 gauge sheet metal?

Can you imagine how much shipping would cost on this alone. lol

I couldn't even imagine the cost of shipping alone on that thing.
A vault door alone cost about $1700 to ship to Hawaii. Manufacture to curb.

Well I dunno. A big safe, time two or three or four.... verses $1700 shipping plus the cost of the door, plus the cost of construction/installation... Just gotta do the math and go with what works for you.

What about using "layered" protection for the bulk of the collection. Assuming you are not looking for fire safes, get cheaper lockable cabinets, put those in a securable closet, inside a securable room. The more locks and time to defeat them aught to deter thieves. Might not be as secure as big heavy safes, but the costs would be much less. For quick access firearms use a quick access containers.

There's a company that sells shipping containers locally by sand island. Long ago, I think there were 3 or 4 sizes and a number of configuration s with roll up doors, roofs, of panels etc. All lockable steel. The price range wasn't too bad but I'm not sure the current prices.

I say use a closet. Throw up some fire board, weld some 1/4" steel walls over that and then put some 1/2" in the door frame with a solid wood or steel door. I think this could be done for under $2000.00. I will be building my own room when we build our house.

Cheaper and actually more secure as more time would be needed to open all safes to access all guns.
Even if they managed to break into one safe, you would not lose all as you would if all was stored together.
I don't keep all of "my eggs in one basket" ! :thumbsup:

have u ever bought steel in Hawaii? About $400-500 for 1 full sheet 1/4", you would need some structural reinforcent to support the weight (350lb per sheet), not to mention welding / burning costs, and all labor. depending on size of closet, I would say your estimate is a bit light.

Actually I have bought steel and I own my own welders. A small closet could be done with two sheets and if you are on slab on grade no reinforcement needed. Every situation is different but I know for mine what I would do and what I am gonna do. Your suggestion was quite a bit more expensive and tougher.

How about use an ordinary room with bars on the windows and install a monitored alarm service.

That's about right. Mild steel, 1/4" thick weighs 10.2 pounds per square foot, commonly available local stock 4' x 8', 6' x 12' up to 8' x 20' sheets at around $1.00/ $1.25 a pound. If you want pieces cut to specific sizes you may pay $1.5 to $2.50 a pound or more.

I fab and weld too. So youre making a 2ftx4ftx6ft closet safe, that can fit 50 rifles with two sheets of 1/4 and no gusset or beams on the outsides and assuming there will be a slab and the OP has welding and cutting equipment, knows how to weld/cut? and that doesnt even address the safes door, fire proofing, shelving, paint etc. And all material and labor amount to $2Gs? hahaha Are there unicorns where you live too? Not trying to be rude, just realistic.

A vault door, while very cool looking would be overkill if the surrounding structure is way more easy to penetrate. Now the vault door might imply, or give the illusion of more security so that might be a plus, but in reality a steel security door with properly built jamb would suffice. It is harder to retro in a vault but for new construction a dedicated vault is the way to go. Hard to argue the CDI factor of a vault door.

It all comes down to the level of security you want. Cost shouldn't matter. Pick a level and work toward that.
