Did I miss something? Can ammo not be shipped here? I started looking on gunbroker and i thought it was a preference thing to not ship here, but just read something that made it sound like it is illegal to ship ammo here. Someone please set me straight!

Yes ammo can be shipped to Hawaii............otherwise we would not have any ammo in the state.
Anyhow it isn't cheap to ship ammo, so unless you can put an ammo order together bordering on 1+ pallets, it's not worth the cost.

CMP ships ammo here via FedEx to your door.

Ren, got a link for cmp?
Last month I went to CA and NV. The plan was to ship to my friends house in Vegas, drive it to CA and drop it off at the docks. I was going to order a bunch of cases of surplus 7.62 and some other stuff for a friend. I got a quote from the same guys OGC uses (I forget what it was off hand). But it came out to just barely less then what I pay OGC for a case. So I didn't do it. But I guess if you can get enough people and a big enough order it might be worth it?
I've also looked at having a case or two sent to another friends house and having him ship it FedEx. But getting info from FedEx on the process is a pain. I went down and talked to them, he said he could not give me the info I need. I need to call the mainland and be on a PC while talking to them. he also felt the need to mention to me that he is a hazardous material shipping specialist, but is not allowed to tell me how to do it...

Talk to Carter at OGC. He will probably have a better deal for you than buying and shipping. Just my $.02

Shipping it to Hawaii tends to be prohibitively expensive, unless you either are going thru CMP, or have a friend with a freight forwarder. CMP only does .30-06, .30 carbine, and .22, so it may not suit your needs.
As a retail customer, your ammo has to be shipped on a next-day basis. SOme silly regulation somewhere that makes it saer. And FedEx freight to Hawaii is not cheap, unless you are CMP.

CMP will lead us to victory in the future, I can smell it.... All those stupid regulations will fall one by one.

I do and have bought quite a few cases from him. But I had to see what it would cost. I still would of saved a few bucks if I did it, but for me it was not worth the hassle.

What did you read?
I read on several sellers' shipping information that no mags over 10rnds and ammo CANNOT be shipped to HI. I asked a friend and he said the same thing. Thought I'd get resolution here on this board, looks like I have all kinds of options. So, as long as you ship overnight you can get ammo via UPS and/or Fedex? I would imagine the normal USPS is not an option...

Some places will not ship to HI and AK. I have had ammo shipped to the door, you just have to find a dealer that does so.

It's a complicated process that a lot of sellers don't want to deal with. Don't forget the extra Hazmat fees. The only way I found it worth it (outside of the CMP) was to freight in a pallet. In the end I just bought my ammo through OGC. Who knows, though, you may find a better deal digging around.
-
You can do it, but you need to work backwards, clearing it and getting a shipping quote for a freight fowarder like Hawaii Freight. You then order your ammo and have it delivered to the freight fowarder. Too make it worth while you need to order in bulk and spread the shipping costs, then pick up the shipment at the fowarder. You'll probably save a few bucks but you really need to put a lot of work into it. At this point, unless you bring in a pallet sized order, it is worth paying OGCs price. If you want a specific load, DIY or special order through one of the local shops.
Friends and I did a bulk shipment for powder a few months ago. It was worth the savings. If OGC goes bulk on powder and primers their cost will likely be good as well.

CMP = Civilian Marksmanship Program
I'm not sure you get ammo unless you are in the program.

You do have to be a member to buy, but being a member is ridiculously easy.

<thread drift>
<snarl>
To me, that whole business of hazmatting smokeless powder and ammo is ridiculous. Pure "infringement," to my mind. I mean, millions of tons of high explosives (as opposed to propellant powder packaged in little brass bottles or in kegs) have been shipped around the world without incident --not counting getting hit with an enemy torpedo or something.

Back to your normal Q&A thread.

Thanks for the info guys!
Quick question(s), CMP sells the M2 ball 30-06 Greek HXP- is that ammo safe to shoot in any 30-06 rifle or just the M1 Garands,1903 Springfield rifles? And it also says "Ammo attracts a magnet." I'm assuming that it's steel core, is it ok to shoot that at Koko Head? I didn't find anything in the rules section about it...

It is fine to shoot in your commercial rifles. And commercial ammo is fine to shoot in most of your milsup rifles. The only exception is the Garand... they are picky, and made to function with that load.
As far as the magnet business, some ranges forbid ammo that contains steel out of fear of starting fires. Kokohead has no such restriction.
