That's just it.
The World Leader were never a part of the actual march.
They were photographed on a secured street, away from the throngs of people who actually attended the march.
Some have argued that this blows up the administration's assertion that the U.S. didn't send a high-ranking officials due to security concerns.
It's funny ... the WH Press Secretary said when asked about the spontaneous trip to Nelson Mandela's funeral and why that was different, the reply was the staff already had everything planned out in case of Mandela's death. They couldn't plan on the timing, but they knew he might pass at any time. There was no way to anticipate the events in France with 17 people killed.
This brought up 2 questions in my mind:
(1) So, I guess the leaders of France are young and healthy enough Obama's staff doesn't feel the same need to have a short notice contingency plan to attend a funeral there? and
(2) Even with the advanced planning for the Mandela Memorial Service, a fake sign language interpreter was just a couple of feet from the President when he was giving his speech. How could marching with 40+ other world leaders with who-knows-how-many combined security details have been any less safe?
