Title: What's going on here? Check out my brass...
Post by: dustoff003 on January 29, 2015, 09:33:53 PM
Aloha all this is not a reloading thread per say but it deals with fired brass, that I was gonna save for possible future use. Mods please relocate if you feel it's needed.

Take a look at this pic zoom in if you need to and let me know what you all think. I don't want to write anything else now to prevent bias let me know what you all think and put your questions and I will reply and let out more info as we go.

8mm Mauser?

headspace, the cartridge is not fully in the chamber.

Here are my questions:

1. What is the caliber of this brass?
2. What is the caliber of the chamber of the gun these were fired out of?
3. Is there anything going on with the primers like they flattened out or popped out?

My first inclination is to think they were fired out of a firearm not chambered for the round. I am probably wrong and Suka probably has it. But something in the back of my mind says I have seen this before. With my memory being what it is I am probably wrong.

Not 8mm Mauser

1) 7.62x54mmR
2) M-N 91/30, cal. 7.62x54mmR
3) I will check the primers again but I don't recall any issues with them

This is was new modern factory ammo made by Sellier & Bellot but packaged and sold as Winchester White Box. Not every round fired had this issue just the 6 pictured out of 20. There were no observed issues with steel cased ammo.

I think Suka has it nailed.

One other thing comes to mind and that is the brass could be old/brittle.

Doesn't the 7.62x54mmR cartridge headspace off the case rim vs. the shoulder? I think I will get a headspace gage so I can check.

Is this a new to you rifle? What is the history o this rifle and ammo if you have had this for a while?

I forgot to ask about the primers. Did you check them?

Did you look in the chamber to see if there is any build up of foreign material?

Head spacing can still be a problem even with rimmed cases if your bolt is not holding the cartridge in correctly. Or if you have a very generous sized chamber.

1) It was new to me a few years ago but it's Russian surplus rifle made in 1943.
2) The ammo pictured was picked up from another forum member it is Winchester White Box made by Sellier & Bellot. It was in what appeared to be a good condition I would have to see if the package or head stamp has any indication as to its age.(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/30/9c20b39394340375750de0dfae13e6b0.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/30/8132f0c4484a32086552f72884dcdff1.jpg)

It was only 6 out of the 20 rounds fired. I shot 40 rounds of steel cased ammo the same day with no observed issues with the steel cases.

Primers were okay

No foreign material that I saw

Yes I think I will get a headspace gage and take another look at the chamber maybe make a mold of it.

Based on the fact it happened to only 6 out of a box of one type of ammo. And it is not happening with other ammo. Combined with your primers looking normal and every other piece of info you provided I would venture to guess it is the ammo/case that is the issue. A headspace issue would probably show up with most or all of your ammo. And you would probably see some sort of deformation of the cases that did not crack.
