Email received from HRA this morning re the need for testimony by tomorrow at 1 PM. Assume most people reading this site got this, but just in case...
Three gun bills are up for a hearing in the Hawaii Senate Public Safety Committee, Tuesday Feb 3, 2015. Please send testimony, and come and deliver it in person if you can for this important first hearing on our issues.

See the last 3 bills on the notice. Click on Status & Testimony for each bill number for the bill history, description, and full text. Click on Sign In/Register. Go back and click Submit Testimony, and follow the prompts. You can attach your testimony as a file, or type it in the "comments" box. Please submit separate testimony for each of the 3 bills. Relating To Firearms Possession. HRA STRONGLY OPPOSES. Requiring a sworn statement that all firearms are disposed of is a violation of individual 5th Amendment rights.
Under current Hawaii law, the county police "may" require individuals denied a permit to dispose of or turn in all firearms within thirty days of denial. Requiring that the PD's "shall" collect firearms removes the necessary discretion currently available in cases while the applicant needs opportunity to show a disability does not exist, particulary as pertains to medical records.

HRA SUPPORTS. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), requiring the states to issue permits to carry concealed to retired law enforcement officers, passed the U.S. Congress 12 years ago. Hawaii still has not implemented a satisfactory mechanism for issuing those permits. The current system is burdensome, defeating the intent of the Federal Act. This bill will help.

Related to Shooting Ranges. HRA STRONGLY SUPPORTS. Nuisance lawsuits brought against lawful previously established shooting ranges, public and private, are often threatened by disgruntled neighbors and government agencies. This bill helps protects vital places to shoot. Mahalo to Sens. Gabbard and Slom for introducing it.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to submit testimony on the first three bills of this session that would effect our exercise of our Second Amendment-guaranteed rights.
We all know the extremely lopsided makeup of the legislature, heavily overloaded with "our" representatives who desire to curtail our rights even further. Perhaps next round of testimony submission we can each encourage one other person to also submit testimony?

I was at the hearing today and there was a lot of support for these 3 bills, around 30 testimonies on the 2a side for each bill. They read off all the names of who submitted testimony and seemed like they weren't expecting that many. Dr Cooper gave his testimony at the hearing which was well thought out. HPD was also on our side for the bills, which is a rare occurrence, though they were silent on the SB473 LEOSA. The Attorney Generals office did support SB473 though. The only opposition was from a domestic violence group who supported SB462 and opposed SB473. SB462 and 473 were deferred until next week (I assume they need more time to dicuss?) and SB955 was approved for the next hearing.
BTW, the AG's office said there were approx 70 CCW issued for LEOSA so far.

Also the committee accepted late testimonies in today. So for future hearings if you miss the deadline, still send it in, or drop it off at the hearing or testify verbally.

LEOSA issued in Hawaii includes several active federal employees, of which I personally know.

Great job folks on opposing SB462. I just reviewed all the submitted testimony and saw all but 1 submission opposed it. Looks like Domestic Violence Action Center is the only supporter (it's not exactly clear). In their letter they expect SWAT to serve restraining orders to firearm owners. How messed up is that?
We gotta do better though, Only 67 pages of testimony (And it looks like it repeats).

Next time, maybe, try to share more on FB and other accounts, see if we can't get more support. Only thing is, that may also get the attention of opposition as well. Thoughts?

As long as those calls are as clear and concise as this one, absolutely. Spread the word by all possible vehicles.

I believe there were a lot of late submitters after the 1pm deadline.
This bill is deferred by committee to next week Tuesday 2/10/15 1:15PM in conference room 229. Please submit testimony BEFORE Monday 2/9/2015 1pm if you haven't done so.

Considering that the submitted testimony was approximately 30 to 1 or 2 for those two bills, I mistakenly read your quote as "No testimony taken seriously at decision."
That couldn't be right! Could it?

If SB462 passes into law, does this mean HPD will confiscate all your existing firearms if you have been falsely flagged by Kaiser? This is getting scary out of hand!
