Title: steel target frame
Post by: stangzilla on February 16, 2015, 08:06:59 PM
made this frame today from galvanized pipe from city mill
had them cut a 10 foot length into 5 two foot lengths and thread each end
used 2 90 degree elbows and 2 T fittings and 2 short nipples to go from the T to the 90 for each of the legs
used 2 hose clamps to secure the chain to the cross bar
I could have saved some money by not threading 1 end on 4 of the 5 two foot lengths of pipe.
i added a cap on the end of each leg.
and 2 S links for the steel target.   :geekdanc:

I noticed that heavy steel structure sitting on your beautiful hardwood flooring.
Weren't you concerned about scratching the floor?

The other thing I noticed is there doesn't seem to be anything to keep the legs from spreading out.

I was real careful putting it on the floor
I screwed it in pretty tight but can still fold flat for transport
Hopefully can push it into the grass/dirt and that'll hold it
But we'll see when I test it out
I'll give it a knock around test tonight

I've thought about a design much like this, and several others.  Let us know how it performs!  Also, what was the bottom line in terms of $$$?

total cost was about $55 for the piping and fittings (without the steel target and chain)
chain is less than $5 depends on what kind of chain you get, then add the steel target cost.
the hardest part was getting the pipe cut and threaded.  city mill did each cut for $1, and each thread for $2.50
i really didnt need to thread both sides of the 4 legs and do the caps on the ends, so that made it more expensive
I was thinking of getting the Caldwell rifle gong and frame for $115 on amazon which was the cheapest i could find
so total cost may be in the 85-95 range, still cheaper than the caldwell one.

The use of hose clamps for mounting the chain is inspired!

3/4" pipe?

I used 1/2 inch pipe.  only bc it's a little cheaper.  we'll see how strong it is once it gets shot.  lol.
the hose clamps are also cheap and easy to install, no drilling, and can adjust the width of the chain, or can take the chain off

I'm going to be trying "the last stand target stand" 39$ w/o shipping on Amazon. It's a rubber mold, that holds 1/2" rebar and looks like a winnah   you can also break it down so it's fairly portable. As far as my steel targets is concerned I'm going to mount them using cargo straps, I heard fire hose is good to use too, it last a lot longer then chain from what I've been researching. I should be getting my molds in the mail this week. Will post some pics as soon as I get it.

fellas speaking of target stands if you hold on for a week we are testing a locally produced product similar to the rubber and rebar type but it's much more compact and portable and less Hassel to bring to the range. It's already prototype just need to range test.

If you are out on Sunday morning, stop by bench 94 and say hello. Some of our members have some pretty big iron shooting 500gr projectiles. Really rings out and tests our steel targets. If it can survive that, it can survive anything.

made one from metal home depot saw horse. Cost 40. worked well for 556. knocked it over a few times with 6.8 tho.
Folds up nice and mostly happy with it.

edit: notice I didn't unfold the right front leg fully for pic. you get the idea tho.

target frame did well with 556, 7.62x39, and 7.62x51
had some damage to the C clamp or D clamp, whatever its called on the right side holding the target bc it got shot
and the hose clamps came a little loose from the shooting
but the frame was good.

Thanks for the follow up stangzilla! What are the rough dimensions for your stand I see in your original post you mentioned a 10 foot length cut in two, but nothing looks 5 feet long did you cut them again so the legs are approximately 2.5 feet long?

we had some discussion of metal targets at the GTG on friday
one thing that was mentioned was that you can use paracord to tie the target
rounds go right through the strands, only burning/melting the fiber a bit
credit to kenace and speed for this idea

the paracord is a good idea.

in case a link breaks, i have extra i can use.   ;)

stangzilla what were you using prior to this new stand?
Title: Re: steel target frame
Post by: stangzilla on February 24, 2015, 12:58:36 PM
i used to just hang a steel target from the target frame.
under the paper targets, i put a cross bar of wood that i would hang the steel target from
it wouldn't last long, due to the shrapnel from the bullet hitting the target and spraying the wood beneath it.
I thought about making a wider, saw horse-like stand to hang the steel from.
but then i thought metal/steel stand would be better, last longer.  better to withstand the lead shrapnel.

how does one care for ar500 steel to prevent rust? oil down after every use and store in cool dry place?

Is AR550 steel significantly better than AR500 steel?
Title: Re: steel target frame
Post by: stangzilla on February 26, 2015, 07:17:49 AM
i just put a coat of paint on it.
it seem to work ok so far.  but i've only had the steel target for maybe 1.5 years, but i don't see any rust on it.
i also have a smaller 4" x 3/8" steel that i use for my airgun in my yard that i just leave out in the elements, and there is surface rust on it. i dont paint it or do anything to it.
i've had that for just as long as the bigger one thats on the target frame.
but i think even with the rust, it'll last for years.  if it gets bad, i'll clean it off with a dremel or something.

Any takes on ar550 steel? I read online that its a lot harder than ar500 but also has a different chemical structure. Was wondering before I make a purchase from eBay.

FYI I'm finding 8", ar500 and 550, laser and/or water jet cut, 1/2” thick, gongs online for $35 shipped on ebay

Heading to home depot tonight after pau Hana to check out steel sawhorses, steel pipe and chain prices  whoooo!

i checked home depot for this sawhorse, no more, they get choke plastic sawhorse and 1 metal variation
gonna check hardware hawaii this weekend

Lockin - i know you havent had issues with stability of this stand up to 6.8 but if you shoot bigger rounds at it...

what about lengthening the chains?  it would lower the center of gravity of the stand as a whole, eliminating tip over

i'd be interested to test if lowering the gong would be substantially beneficial to stability  8)

interested to see if a 30-06 would scratch it ... if i end up getting it i wouldnt mind letting them old timers have a shot at it with them heavy ass rounds!  :D

5 months later, and still going strong!
shot it again this weekend after tightening up the legs with a pipe wrench.
eventually i'll have to replace the hose clamps bc 1 got shot up a bit, lead hitting the top pipe as well as the legs.
overall its standing up well.
