Title: Remington 700 Gunsmith on Oahu?? Custom 700 Build
Post by: bjnodl0 on February 28, 2015, 12:37:05 AM
Here is the Plan Looking to build a Custom Remington 700 using the Following items below. Question is once I get them all shipped here I don't have a place to properly put them together nor the equipment or experience. Im wondering if anyone has had any work done to their R700 by any of the gunsmiths on Oahu and has had a good experience. The second question would be is building one from scratch not worth the money? Custom bolt guns are expensive already but I haven't seen one that offer everything I looking for.

Here is the list of Item Im thinking about so far.

 - MDT HS3 chassis. http://mdttac.com/hs3-chassis-system.html (http://mdttac.com/hs3-chassis-system.html)
 - Magpul stock and grip
 - PTG Extreme Remington 700 LA or SA blue printed action http://shop.pacifictoolandgauge.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=310_282_286_290&products_id=2152 (http://shop.pacifictoolandgauge.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=310_282_286_290&products_id=2152)
 -  Rock Creek 5R .308 Barrel https://www.stockysstocks.com/rock-creek-5r-cut-rifled-308-264-barrels-sporter-varmint-target-tactical.html (https://www.stockysstocks.com/rock-creek-5r-cut-rifled-308-264-barrels-sporter-varmint-target-tactical.html)

scope base, lugs and bipod i haven't really decided yet.

Glass is up for debate too but i might use something I already have.

Feed back is appreciated. would probably use this for long range (schofield) target shooting.

Lol it all comes down to depth of your pockets and the distance you want to shoot . I got an rem700 xcr lrt . Didnt  change the barrel or anything internal . Had Wayne do his mad scientist work on it . Right now we can get pretty good grouping @1700 yd . It has the distance . If you want a detailed list of what we done lmk

I've only seen Wayne of Pacific Customs work and results. His guns do shoot. Albeit I've only seen him shoot his rifles at max 600 yards. Blowing up the spotter was pretty common.
If you're going to go through all that trouble I'd just order one from GAP. http://www.gaprecision.net/ga-precision-2014-custom-rifles.html (http://www.gaprecision.net/ga-precision-2014-custom-rifles.html)
Or if you can hunt down a 2112, I'm not sure how certain people are doing it but they are the best. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_3/1312_Quantico_M40A1_buld.html (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_16_3/1312_Quantico_M40A1_buld.html)

These rifles shoot and are a great value although they are pre 64 Win 70 actions http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_7_93/1310566_FN_SPR_s__SALE_A1__A2___A3G__A5M___Also___LEO_MIL_DISCOUNT.html (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_7_93/1310566_FN_SPR_s__SALE_A1__A2___A3G__A5M___Also___LEO_MIL_DISCOUNT.html)

I'd also add that getting a good optic is just as important as the rifle itself. I've seen shooters get a quality rifle then throw some knock-off cheap scope. I've been in that situation myself and it is frustrating. Scope won't hold zero or the image quality is horrible (yellow tint etc.)
Get known, quality scopes i.e. Leupolds, Nightforce, Trijicon, US Optics, Schmidt & Bender, some Weavers. BTW, they have Mil/LE discount programs. If all you are doing is shooting at Kokohead and reliving your days as a sniper on COD or Halo; then perhaps getting a cheap optic on a quality rifle may be a route you could take, but its like putting 87 Octane in a Corvettte - it can run but not optimally.

Wayne did mine.  Real tack driver and spotter smoker.  He is REAL busy though.

Had Wayne at Pacific Custom do my R700.  Quality work, action felt fantastic and I saw improved shot groupings. (ended up selling for a loss because I didn't like my stock choice and barrel length after the fact).  Your second question is really  up to you.  I would recommend, if possible, handle as many different rifles as you can so you have a good idea of what YOU want.  Last thing you want to do is purchase something that doesn't feel right in your hands.  Another thing to consider is if you are looking at more of a budget build or something that you don't mind spending a pretty penny for.  Custom bolt guns are expensive, but majority of the time it comes with peace of mind that you purchased quality (buy once cry once mentality).

If I was in the market again, I would give this a look.  I have been stoked with my Accuracy International rifle.

Good luck!  :shaka:

Nothing wrong with Accuracy International  . I own one which is chamber in 338 and probably the best rifle I have ever shot . A buddy of mine ran his ax308 with my rem700 308 ACIS built by Wayne . Two shooters running both rifles no difference . I would like to try and run a Desert Tech srs but kind of disappointed that it has a zero cant top rail . Like I said custom built rifle / AI / desert tech/ GAP and so one will cost a very shiny penny . Plus now you spent all that cash on a rifle you can't go cheap on your scope .  If you do it do it right lol like ImKu said" cry once" . Good luck with your choice and please post pictures when done  :shaka:
