Title: Misplaced my long gun permit to acquire
Post by: Sodie on March 05, 2015, 06:31:00 PM
Like the subject says...  Got it in early January, and I think it got swept up with some other papers and probably got tossed.   :(

Is there a process to get a replacement?  I'd rather not wait until the end of the year to renew it...

Thanks.

I believe you need to fill out a police report for the lost permit before reapplying for a new one.

Ding ding ding!  We have a winner!   :worship:  I called the Firearms Division today, since they hadn't answered the email I sent two weeks ago.

The process:

1) Visit HPD and submit a "lost property report" for the missing permit.
2) Get report number.
3) Bring report number to Firearms Division and fill out and submit new paperwork.
4) Wait two weeks, because even though I had an approved permit just a couple of months ago, I may have become a violent felon (in addition to being a dumbass who loses important paperwork).
5) Profit!

On the bright side, I managed to do steps 1 through 3 today, so I'm on step 4...   :geekdanc:

You can go in there on day fourteen, pick up your handgun permit to acquire, go get the gun, immediately return with handgun for them to confirm serial number, etc. and issue the registration form, and have all the paperwork to get another handgun permit to acquire, and you STILL have to wait two weeks (minimum). It's amazing how almost all the other states do instant checks at point of purchase (or no checks on private sales) and people are still alive in those states. How can that be?  If you have a "clean" background your check might clear in 48 hours. That leaves 12 more days AFTER the check for you to go crazy before you pick up the permit to acquire. Of course if you already have another firearm from a previous purchase... that's why judge Ishii in California declared California's "waiting period" unconstitutional for people already in possession of another firearm. :shaka:

Exactly.

But, in an attempt to make lemonade out of the lemons (or maybe just make more lemons), I'm going to get some passport photos taken and apply for my CCW when I go to pick up my PTA... :geekdanc:

I don't think it takes even 48 hours for an NCIC check to clear you, assuming you have no criminal record. About a year and a half ago Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam instituted new security measures for contractors to get on base if they didn't already have a pass. When I went through it I asked if it was going to be an NCIC check, the guy told me yes, and it might take as long as 2 hours. I cleared in 15 minutes.

Now, there might be extenuating circumstances in my case as I've previously gone through FBI checks to get an AOA badge for the airport as well as checks for what they call a "CIA" pass { don't remember what it stands for } because we were doing work in restricted areas in the submarine base. Still, if they can get anyone with a valid ID approved or disapproved to enter the base in a couple of hours I don't see why it should take HPD any longer to clear someone.
