Title: Selling a Handgun to someone on the Mainland
Post by: Grumpy on September 13, 2011, 05:46:37 PM
Being in Hawaii, how do I go about selling one of my handguns to someone in the continental US? I'm planning on listing something on an online classified section but I want to know exactly what I need to do before I do so.

I know I would need to send the Handgun to an FFL in the buyers state. Can I send it myself or should I get a local FFL to send it out? If I can send it myself, what's the best way?

Do I need to notify HPD about selling the firearm out of state since it is currently registered under my name?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Why sell it to a mainland buyer?

Sell it to someone here.

You can send it yourself via UPS or FedEx (no USPS). BUT I highly recommend doing an FFL to FFL transaction...this will eliminate the guesswork in shipping. An additional plus of going through a local FFL is you create a papertrail showing it was sold and no longer your responsibility.

Notifying HPD is not a requirement, but you can. Personally I turn in my registration and a copy of the buyers FFL, just to remove it from my records.

Why sell it to a mainland buyer?

Sell it to someone here.

This is a good question. Selling locally would eliminate the extra expense of shipping (or FFL to FFL transfer).  ???

I do plan to post it locally.  I'm just trying to open it up for an opportunity for me should nobody want it locally.  I'm still waiting on my brother's camera so I can take some pics.  Thanks guys.

Depending on the receiving FFL you may be able to send it to them directly.  Some FFL's will require that it be a FFL to FFL process, just make sure you note that in your ad/auction.  Also I'd make sure you insure and track the package, again more cost and time, but more safety.

Finally you should note what kind of payment you will accept.  Personally I'd go a USPS money order for more layered protection.

I would notify HPD that you sold the firearm to make sure if something happens with the firearm in the future it doesn't come back to you.

You don't need to worry about selling it to a buyer on the mainland as long as Kingkeoni lives in Hawaii!  I gotta get myself into that guy's will!

Grumpy, you can always put it on consignment at one of the local stores.

I would notify HPD that you sold the firearm to make sure if something happens with the firearm in the future it doesn't come back to you.

...which is exactly the reason why I wouldn't buy a gun that's been registered anywhere if I was on the mainland.  The 4473 is bad enough, but at least those are paper-only and ostensibly don't go anywhere beyond the dealer's local records..  I don't trust HPD record-keeping for any reason other than what they'll do for their own benefit at the expense of tax-paying Citizens.  After witnessing an HPD cop commit perjury on the stand just to make a speeding ticket stick and a judge knowingly violate the rules of evidence in open court to back him up, it's pretty clear to me just how petty, vindictive and corrupt the whole lot of them can be when it suits them.  Registering a gun is like getting married and then letting your wife live with Bill Clinton.
