Title: Hurricane season
Post by: Rocky on June 23, 2015, 05:49:06 PM
Just a reminder, we're in Hurricane season.

Now's the time to rotate your gas supply's, drain, refill  generators (including Fuel stabilizer in both) and fire them up.
Might as well tune up your vehicle ( oil change fuel/injector treatment, check tires, brakes etc...

Rotate your go bag's clothes, food, water, med's, and OTC drugs

Drain, clean and refill your 55 gallon water barrels.

Check your supply of Charcoal, propane, bleach, TP, PT, long term food, water, med's, and OTC drugs.

Don't just survive, prosper.

Survival is just breaking even !  :grrr:

Good reminder.  Just got some new spam cans tonight good to 2018.  I opened up one old one yesterday that date expired 2013 the fat or whatever the slime part was crystallized.  The meat was kinda funny color pink so I tossed them all and switched to vienna sausage.  I know I know they all kinda' funny pink color but it's time to renew the whole stash :)

I'll add to buy a couple cans of starting fluid spray.  They sure make things easier even with electric start.  Plus have other uses.

Did Costco yesterday to replenish canned goods (veggies, spam, CB and CB Hash, Pink Salmon etc...) 150 rolls TP,  90 rolls PT, razors, toothpaste, soap, shampoo Q-tips (not to be confused with tips from Q) gallons of bleach, dish soap, laundry detergent, Clorox Clean Up, nitrile gloves, 15 gallons non-ethanol gas with stabilizer, big ole bottle of Makers Mark, carton of butts and I'm all set.

Seems the system is pretty good.
All old supplies either used/rotated out and nothing beyond expiration.   :geekdanc:

Recently bought a Midland WR-120EZ radio from Amazon and  a Eton Zone Guard  radio from a local Radio Shack.  Both are NOAA weather radios.
Plan to get another 3 pack of butane fuel late summer to cook indoors if need be.  Can't do that with my propane and white gas Coleman stoves.
Also like to get those quick dry flood barriers, but don't know if sold locally.
Consider with the summer heat, to stay cool (while sleeping) in event of a power loss, putting up a small dome tent in the living room and operating a small battery operated desk fan (at the tents opening).  Due to the round interior shape the air from the fan blew all around making a nice cooling breeze in the tent.  Better than just using the fan to try cool a room and the air only blowing one direction.  I did this one hot summer early afternoon and was good for me to sleep in.

Funny, I've been using my PROPANE 4 burner stove / oven in my kitchen for 8 years.

Online discussions about propane indoors seem to run 50-50.   People say they used it for years indoors and no issues.  Maybe bottom line is you have good ventilation for indoors.   Others say that for safety the tank need to be outside.  Guess it's up to the user to decide since there's no definite right answer.
But for me I use the single burner butane stoves with the canister indoors.   Heats up water, and food pretty quick.  When there's a hurricane warning issued, I stage the stove/cannisters, along with portable radios on the dining room table and LED lanterns in each room
I have 2 burner propane stoves and a lantern but use it outdoors for camping.

I'm talking about my store bought (Sears) LPG (liquid propane gas)v Bosch Kitchen range and yes, "Others say that for safety the tank need to be outside." which is where my 250 Gal tank is.
I do know of someone who does use the 5 gallon Bar-b-que propane tank for his kitchen stove.
He is smart enough to keep the tank outside piped into his house but dumb enough top have it directly on the outside wall of his range on his coveredd deck.
Too close IMHO

Seems a little early in the season but news said another "disturbance might form in our hood.  IMHO the recent high temps also have been early here, normally get that in Sept/Oct.   Don't know if that's something significant or just flukes.
Trying to get off my okole and look into a good solar battery charger for AAA, AA and D.   Gotta stop buying reloading components and accessories and go to Battery Bill's for Goal Zero stuff.
Anyways everyone stay alert and plan to get your extra supplies early to avoid Costco/Ciity Mill crowds.

Was gonna pick up a water BOB, but decided to bleach the hell out of the trash cans again and just let the Gods of rain fill up my containers for free.

Water heater is a good source for drinking water.  Holds 30-50 gallons which will sustain a family of 4  for a week or so.

Water storage is No.1.   A good thing to have is those 48 qt. or bigger coolers with wheels to get to the water wagon IF it gets to your street.   Another thing which is a real last minute buy is to fill up big coolers with 20 lb bags of ice or block ice if available.  When it melts, you have water.
I have water bobs but thing is you have to be pretty sure that electrical/water will go out since it's mostly one time use.   Can just fill the bathtub instead.  West Marine  sold HD 5 gal. potable water cans (think made by Scepter) for about $24 each.   These smaller containers are more portable around the house and last longer than the thin kind sold at Walmart.
If a big one is coming  the refuse containers to catch rain water (after the winds) is a good idea for gray water.
To minimize water use, I plan to use paper plates or stuff that don't need washing.  Also bought the stainless steel surgical bowl that this lady sells at the gun show to wash face and give yourself a quickie bath when the stink gets to you.

This ever happen to anyone here?  Happened to me 2x now - liquid detergent jugs spring a leak at a corner making a mess of things.  So I have rotated all of them to the bottom of the rack below any electricals.  I figure the constant heat expansion and then cooling causes the jug to crack at the weak point.  Both were new and unopened jugs no idea how old and just sitting there nothing on top or leaning on them.   I have plenty bar soap plus borax and Oxy to make my own powdered laundry soap but never got around to it.  I think if I buy anymore store bought it will be powdered from now on.

A few changes after tonight...

- Cancelled the order on the coleman and rocket stove; figured they wouldn't get here in time (being that the storm arrives over the weekend  :shake: ) and luckily found my old camper stove. I have tons of cinder blocks, so I will just make a makeshift rocket like this:
https://youtu.be/kmDYUrVHPWc
Only change I will make is add another block on top to increase the chimney to 12in, as you want the length to be 3x the diameter of the hole.

This is a great idea but remember that common CMU are not firebrick and that at  prolonged and/or higher temperatures, may split/crack or even worse, "shatter splatter" projecting pieces of concrete.

I have had this happen once to an older detergent container, but I blamed that on stocking up too much and not being able to rotate it out fast enough. :grrr:
Always store liquids on the bottom and out of sunlight and as cool as possible.

True, but good enough for a short time period.

If I could get my hands on some 3-4in square tubing, I'd just make my own
Get the actual clay chimney flue ( 8x8, 8x12, 12x12 etc...), heat resistant and insulatory().
Throw some fire brick around it or use more than one pieece and you can have an oven too

I am totally disgusted with the stupid plastic gas cans with the stupid spout that trickles out gas and drips too.  Totally worthless!

So, did some research and it appears that Jerry Cans are the way to go & specifically NATO spec Jerry Cans.  BUT, it is expensive ~ $119.00 for a 20 liter can from Amazon.  There are cheaper ones out there, but apparently not up to NATO spec.

Please post if you have found a better price for these . . .

Not the NATO cans but the NO-SPILL brand gas cans have worked well for me.  I have the 1.25 and 2.50 gal. cans and they don't spill/leak.   Need to press the green button to dispense fuel.   Priced well and available at City Mill, Ace etc. and also available in 5 gal.
For my weed whacker and chainsaw gas and use once a week.  These are better than the other commercial plastic cans and thicker plastic.   Although I started buying the already blended 92 fuels like Stihl Moto-Mix for some power equipment and emergency use.

With this guy named Guillermo possibly hitting Hawaii, most people fill up containers with tap water as their main source.
I live in the area that BWS says the aquifer MAY get contaminated from the Red Hill jet fuel leak.  Already received 2 letters from BWS warning of this issue.   If that does happen, getting water from the tap will not be too ono.   Anyway what water filters for your home does 2AHawaii guys recommend?  I'm not knowledgeable about components of JP-8 fuel.

I only drink bottled water. A few decades ago we had that heptachlor scare over here in Waipahu.
Tap water here tastes junk. I also run bottled water into the icemaker via a flojet pump.

O.F., I guess your bottled water is like the Menehune Water 5 gal.  containers and not the small Costco kind.  Surprizing that BWS has not filtered your tap water better which makes me think that if our aquifer does become contaminated, we might be on our own.  Was hoping they are planning to use some fancy filtration system in case.   This aquifer serves residents from Moanalua to Hawaii Kai, lots of people.
I have stored tap water in 5 and 10 gal. containers and a 55 gal. container from last August twin hurricane scare.
Most of the water filters sold at stores filter microbial stuff and heavy metals but not sure this is enough for jet fuel.   I also have about 5 cases of old  Costco bottled water which the plastic is already becoming soft.
I may just buy a PUR faucet filter as it's better than nothing.  I have to drain my old stored water early next week and refill.  I mix in a small amount of non-scented Clorox bleach per every 5 gal.
Hope everyone keep on their toes and stay safe next week.

I recommend a Reverse Osmosis filter system to anyone looking for serious water filtration. RO is recommended for filtering radioactive water, so I'd imagine it will handle fuel no problem. I got an RO system when I started saltwater tanks, and now I wouldn't have a home without one. Fairly easy to install and the filtered water is stored in a pressure pot, which is nice incase of emergency. If you have the space for it, I think they make the storage pots up to 120gallons.

KK, my issue is lack of space under the sink and don't want to cut a hole in granite counter top for the faucet.  If I were to build a custom house, RO would definitely be installed.
Where and how do you have your unit installed and what size tank do you have?

Did some Google-fu and found out that my Berkey filter will filter out VOCs including fuel, but didn't specify what type of fuel.  May want to contact them to verify.

I have a Big Berkey and it works great with two filter elements although you can have four.  I also have a Katadyn mini for on the go or bug out, a Steripen, Berkey water filter sports bottle (for on the go & my GHB), and a few Nalgene water bottles.  You can never have too much drinking/potable water as it is the most essential for survival, aside from lead that is . . .  :D

And, I have RO filters for both of my sinks as KK suggested it is the best.  Although, you can make/buy a solar water distiller which is equal to or better than RO.  But, it doesn't have the throughput of the RO.

KK, my issue is lack of space under the sink and don't want to cut a hole in granite counter top for the faucet.  If I were to build a custom house, RO would definitely be installed.
Where and how do you have your unit installed and what size tank do you have?
Ya, space is usually the problem. My entire system fits under my sink, including the 4 gallon tank, I tee'd off the cold water valve under the sink to supply the RO system. Most systems come with the fittings to make it work, but Home Depot carries everything you would need if not. My dad has a countertop RO system because he didn't have space under the sink, it is compact, but unsightly on the countertop. He ran it without a storage tank and just filled a pitcher for drinking water daily. RO systems filter slowly, so not having a storage tank is annoying since the water tickles out instead of a steady stream. The storage tank will give you a steady stream of water, but slows down as the tank empties. With my 4 gallon tank I can fill 2 gallons of water before I notice the stream slow, then after 15 minutes it's full again.

At home and at our BOL, we have Monolithic brand water filters.
Build a Berkey for about $20.00 plus containers.
I splurged for two new 5 gallon buckets w/lids (another $20.00) but you could mount these puppies on 55 gal bbls if you wanted

You can never have too much drinking/potable water as it is the most essential for survival, aside from lead that is . . .  :D
I  have a Big Berkey bought around Y2K time but ashamed to say I've never tested it out with water.  I also have a Sawyer SP181 filter system using a modified 5 gal. bucket but this is mostly for microbial stuff (although I put it toghether, also never tested with water).
Right now for drinking water I use that Brita pitcher.

Wire and Kia:   Approximately how much water is used to produce 1 gal. of treated water?   If your systems have plastic tubing how are they holding up as far as durability.  .
I'll check more into RO.  What brands do you recommend?

Q:  By remineralize, do you mean to shake it up or add a ionizer?

BTW, BWS has community section on their site that links to the Red Hill issue.  Worse case scenario is not good for Oahu.  They are saying that contaminants include lead, toluene and naptha.   I don't remember BWS getting that worked up about a issue other than chemicals from sugar fields affecting water in central Oahu back in the 80's.  I e-mailed them today to ask if they can recommend a water filter system for fuel contamination.   Will let everyone know what they say.
Thanks for the discussion.

Will check this out.  Maybe similar to the Sawyer system I have but mine doesn't have ceramic filters like the Mono.
Thanks for the info.

The RO system upstairs is over 10 years old & aside from filter replacement it is solid.  The plastic tubing is still in great shape as it is much thicker than the plastic tubing they sell for the water line to the fridge.

The one downstairs is around 5 years old going strong.  Had to replace the old RO system as I could not find one of the filers - discontinued.  >:(

If I recall correctly, the systems' use around 3 gallons to produce 1 gallon of pure water for drinking.

Not sure of the brand, I will check when I get home & post up.

Haven't replaced a hose or fitting since I put it in about 7 years ago, just replace prefilters yearly and RO membrane every 5. My system is APEC, customer service and quality is good. My dad has a spectrapure low waste system that I believe is 1:1. Mine is somewhere between 2:1 or 3:1 waste/pure. If location permits, you can route the waste water outside to water plants. If you get one make sure is uses 10" filters and 1/4" tubing, that way finding replacement filters/parts is easy since it's mostly standardized.

Thanks guys for all the info on RO.  Since I don't want to drill a hole in the granite counter top, I'm thinking of using a substitute 1/4" valve  mounted on a sliding platform inside of the underneath cabinet instead of the spigot.  Slide it out when you need water in a container, then slide it back in.
BTW, BWS reply to me was they cannot recommend any brands and that I should do the research.   That was helpful.
Will be researching on the different RO systems.

Built my own after taking Rocko's advice.

It not only saved me a bunch of cash, but also made me like Rocky after all our heated discussions prior to that
