Where's the best ak47(quality) made from?
-
Bulgarian

I'm a big fan of Saigas. They are made in Russia and sold brand new. I've heard the accuracy is also better than other aks but haven't done any comparisons myself.
The only problem with them is that they come in "sporting form." Junky trigger and doesn't fit milsurp mags out of the box (needs a bullet guide and some trimming of the latch).
You can get a k-var already converted and they were just selling for $500. IMHO, they are selling for too much now.

I did a side by side comparison between a Romanian WASR and a Bulgarian SLR a few years back and the Bulgarian out preformed the Romanian by far (no surprise) and about a week ago I did a side by side between the same WASR and my new Saiga 7.62x39 and the Saiga out preformed the WASR at 50 yards but didn't do as well as the Bulgarian. When that Bulgarian is back on the island I want to put it against the Saiga to see how it fairs but for now I'm going to default and say the Bulgarian SLR is the best if you're looking for quality.
I do love the Saiga series. I own a Saiga 7.62x39 and a Saiga 12 (my favorite gun).
Without a doubt it my mind; the Saiga 12 is the best shotgun in the world.

Where can I find bulgarian and kvar here on oahu?
Is accuracy really that bad for ak's?

Is accuracy really that bad for ak's?
Depends on what you mean by "that bad." AKs are made for a purpose. Like most successful tools, they are very well designed for that purpose. Their jobs are to work in horrible conditions and kill things not very far away. So, if you dream about making 1 or 2 MOA groups on paper at 100 yards, do not buy an AK. Any AK.
However, when shooting friends' AKs at Kokohead, I can reliably hit the steel targets at 200 yards once I've made peace with the gun.
My experience is that most AK rifles, particularly when fed with cheap ammo, are around 5 MOA rifles. Scoping them doesn't really help much... the gun is designed with generous tolerances to function reliably even when filled with mud. That kind of capability is not conducive to precision accuracy.
So what are your expectations? Want to hit a 12" gong at 440 yards? You might do that 1 shot in 30. Want to hit a man-sized target in a fatal area at 100 yards or closer? You should be able to do that 100% of the time. It's all about expectations.

Ive never seen an AK made with inferior materials compared to another, only poorly built (usually by century arms.) Different countries made their own small changes to the design, but otherwise the steel is the same, machining is the same (all rough) and will work just as good as one next to it. My favorite (and only) AK I own currently was built by Troy Sellars of In Range LLC from a basic Romanian G kit; the cheapest available kit before the ATF axed the importation of kits with barrels. When it comes to AKs, the quality doesnt come from the country of origin, but from the competence and meticulous attention to detail from the builder.

Saiga SGL-10 converted by Chris Butler. Now that the 7.62x51 has been permanently removed from inventory, I may have to pick up a second AK, preferably in Type 56 configuration. Anyone know where to get a machined Polytech with underfolder?

Hi guys,
Since this seems to be the only AK-47 related thread, it seems that this question would best fit here.
As I understand it, high capacity magazines are acceptable in the state of Hawaii for AK-47. So 20, 30, 40 rds. shouldn't be an issue, correct? Lastly, what about legalities of a 75 rd. drum, and any experience regarding them?
Thanks,

Although there exists an AK pistol, it is prohibited in Hawaii. Therefore there should be no issues using magazines of any capacity on your AK. Even the 75 round drum is fine.

Are you sure about that? I have heard so many conflicting views on the matter. I thought that if any rifle has a pistol version, the mags must conform to the ten round rule. Even if the pistol version is not allowed here.

This is a huge matter of dispute. To lean on the safe side, I'd recommend against it. There are, however, shops that sell standard capacity (30 rd.) AK mags because they feel it is legal to.
If in doubt, you might be able to write the AG's office for an opinion. :grrr:

Good info, thanks all

I'm late to reply but I think the best AK's aren't really pure AK's to begin with. The VEPR uses a 1.5mm thick RPK receiver compared to the 1mm receiver of normal stamped AK's. The difference might not seem huge but the thicker the receiver the less flex and the better the accuracy.
The only downside to the VEPR family is the fact they're heavy compared to other AK's and they lack compatibility with other AK furniture.
Although it looks like an AK; the VZ-58 is another option. It's been tested against several AK's and it seems to come out on top all the time. Interesting weapon indeed.

True; I think Galils, Valmets, and FNCs make better AKs than AKs do.

I know I am late, but the best AK's are Saigas, especially the ones from KREBS Customs in my opinion if you go the money. http://www.krebscustom.com/ (http://www.krebscustom.com/) I wish I never sold mines.
Also used many types of AK's in the Middle East and it does really depend on the builder WRT to the AK itself. To me if it has a TAPCO G2 Trigger and decent/acceptable mag well, you were good to hook. Just a side note, we used to mess with the local Iraq Police when it came to their AKs. During a range sessions we used to tell them if they wanted more power form the AK, they had to adjust the rear sight to the number 8 if they wanted more stopping power. Thank goodness we left a month latter. Stupid things we do sometimes. I feel bad now. Going in my hole!
