Title: Question for Shotgunners on POI
Post by: Mr. Farknocker on July 06, 2015, 10:05:13 AM
Just picked up my very first shotgun last week from a fellow 2AH member. It's an 18" 12ga with ghost ring sights. I bought some 1oz slugs from the LGS and took it out to the range yesterday and shot a few holes through a paper target at the 50 yd mark. I was able to get the shots lined up vertically but couldn't raise the POI high enough to get near the bullseye because I ran out of adjustment. The shots were averaging about 8" - 10" low which indicated that I needed to raise my rear sight higher. Is my shot placement normal at that distance or should I be a lot closer to the POI ?

There are 25yd target holders on the far right side of the range. I think 50yds is too far, personally.

i thought you have to aim the slugs at the 100 yd targets because they need to hit the berm

My buddy shoots 25yd slugs every Sunday he comes. The RO's watch him and have never said a word to him.

If I remember my WI Deer hunting correctly, a 1 oz slug drops 8" at 50 yrds.
We sighted in at 30 yds (happy medium) and Kentucky'd any thing after that.
Most often left 50 yds to the rifle guy as shotgun was more for that buck that jumped out right in front of you while breaking or for the stand on trail.
A slug at 50yds in the bush hits a lot of twigs &  branches

No. Slugs. We're talking about slugs, not hugs.

sorry, mr f

my suggestion would be bring it to the open shoot on range day and check the sights at 15-20 yards

Is there any comb adjustment you can make?  maybe the stock mounting just a hair too high.

there's one RO out there that will say you should be able to hit at 100 yards.  yah ok, that didn't make me feel better either lol.  I think I could do it now that got fitted better.

Just out of curiosity did you try and adjust the rear sight in the opposite direction?  I saw what you posted in the latest purchase thread and was thinking that maybe the Chinese sight is marked incorrectly, especially if you're "bottoming" out the rear sight and can't adjust it anymore.  The Chinese are good at copying stuff, but sometimes lack the understanding of how things are supposed to function.  If you're going to use it as an HD gun then I would zero it at 25 tops like Inspector, Q, Rocky, and Macsak all suggested.  GL.  :shaka:

If your'e shooting smooth bore vs rifled, that may have a lot to do with drop @ 100 yds.

The rear ghost ring can be raised/lowered and drifted left and right. The front sight is fixed.  My initial shots with no adjustment were hitting very low-left. Following the principle of moving the rear signt in the direction you desire to move the POI, I drifted the ghost ring over to right and raised it as high as it will go. Does that sound like how it should be adjusted?

Sounds like you're making the correct asjustment so it should have been getting closer the higher the rear sight went.  The only thing I could find with someone who had a similar problem was this guy:  http://youtu.be/X9qvWQPeo5o  his sights actually didn't go low enough even though he was shooting at 25 yards.  I'd see what happens when you try the 25 yard target or closer.
